Post by marky »

right now im trying to get a new computer

its not very easy for me, for alot of complicated reasons

going beyond the reasons, im making up a computer list, while some of them are only the companies, any and all suggestions will be greatly helpful, and appreciated

note - i would like to build a computer, but currently, i have not decided whether to build or buy

note 2 - this list has been compiled from reading thru Pc Gamer, computer gamer, and several other magazines

currently, the list is as follows -

Alienware - aurora or area 51
Viciouspc- paladin, assassin
voodoopc
Falcon Northwest
ABS

any suggestions?

[:D]

note - based on advice i have recieved, i have scrapped the dell xps and gateway 710g and 710gx from the list

The *best* way to go, if you aren't building your own from parts, is to find a local store and have them build it to your specs. That way you get the PC you want, someone else will have to load Windows and you have a local source you can complain to if something breaks. This is cheaper than a major brand but not quite as cheap as a total DIY solution.

I strongly recommend you check out ArsTechnica's DIY guide. I used this to spec out my motherboard, CPU and sound card. I then called a local store (Central Computers in San Francisco) and told them what I wanted and when I wanted to pick it up.

Get at least a one year warranty on parts. Three may be overkill.

If you're into flight sims or other CPU-heavy 3D games get as much CPU as you can afford and ask for extra power supply and cooling so you can upgrade your video card once without having to touch anything else. Otherwise, look at their prebuilt machines and figure out what you can afford.

You'll need: (some of these things you can cannibalize out of your old one)

Case w/ ample power supply

Motherboard(you can get these with the CPU alrady installed)

Soundcard(might be able to cannibalize)

Video Card

Memory

You might be able to use your floppy and cd drives to keep costs down, along with your keyboard and mouse.

Desktops are so cheap right now, and you don't need a monitor so that may be a better way of going really.

don't forget a modem or ethernet card[:D]

Many times you can get a 10/100 built into the motherboard.
