diferent nations casualties during WW2

Post by Gallo Rojo »

Hi there!
A little of-topic question:
Do you guys know how many casualties sufered each country during WW2?

I know that the USSR sufered aprox 20 millions, and a pal told me in another thread that the US sufered aprox 400,000.
What about the rest of the nations? Do you know how many of the casualties were soldiers and how many civilians? (I guess that almost all American casualties were soldiers but many Soviet ones should have been civilians).

best,
Gallo

Here's another list, just for reference. There are variations to data as you can see...

I have seen everthing from 20-40 million for the Soviet side.
Unfortunatly records are not that great and the Party wiped many peoples names off the record who were undesirable and whom Stalin was going to off anyways.

China fought the axis powers for the longest time of any nation in WW2. Interesting trivia.

We will probably never get anything more than a qualified guess when it comes to total losses for the Soviet Union. I don't think even back in the day they knew exactly how much even the Red Army lost, let alone civilian casualties.

One can look at the demographics. Russia has a major "dent" in its' population growth curve, and using that one it's possible to estimate how many people are "missing" to form an uninterrupted curve.

I think the estimate says around 100 million, but that includes deaths by natural causes, the purges, hunger and maybe most importantly - compounding.

You probably have enough info now but if you want more then the book "THE WORLD WAR II DATABOOK" by John Ellis is a fantastic source of WWII info. The copy I have was published by BCE by arrangement with Aurum Press Ltd. [&o]

Gorby's official statement in 1990 was 26 million for the USSR. According to our military historians in Washington, we lost 273,000. Keep in mind that some people who make lists do not know the difference between causualties and fatalities.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly.
