Building Bridges

Post by PaulWRoberts »

Hi all,

I've got some questions about bridge building in HTTR. I've not done it in the game, but I'd like to know more about it before I try. Specifically:

1. Can bridges only be built at "crossing points" and over previously destroyed bridges, or is it possible (given enough time) to lay a heavy bridge at, say, a ferry crossing?

2. How do I determine what type of bridge to build? Do engineers just keep building from light to medium to heavy until I make them stop? Can all builders build every type of bridge?

3. Does an engineer bridge persist on the map even if the engineer moves away or is destroyed?

4. Is there any approximation of assault boats in game? I suppose a light engineer bridge might be taken to represent the bringing up of boats and the use of them to get infantry across...

5. I never see (or never notice) "bridge building capacity" listed among an engineer's equipment. How rare is it, and which units have it?

Thanks!

All covered in the manual. It helps to read it multiple times as you miss stuff the first couple (like I do all the time).

*certain* engineers have bridging equipment to rebuild a blown crossing. The airborne boys do not have such heavy equipment. You will know them when you see them as they have a different icon style from a normal engineer.

The bridge type starts at basic, then can be built again to a higher level (upgraded). Once built, it is built. These are not temporary crossings.

Assault boats are not represented as such. Your assumption is correct, a light bridge is walking folks only.

"Assault Boats" it's represented by ferry crossings I think (which you can't build). Assault boats were not employed usually, just in very limited locations. To represent their usage during MG some extra ferry crossings have been placed probably. For example I think the 4 ferry crosses near the Arnhem RR Bridge probably are supposed to be assault boat crosses.

It was rather an small party (of engineers) who crossed the river and established a defensive perimeter and then assited in the building of the bridge, but this is all abstracted by the "build bridge", which is good enought at the scale we are.

Ah, once you have a bridging unit building it, try to get as much engineers as possible, as it will be faster and fatigue willincrease slower (I think)

Just one two things to add:

(1) The bridge building units are not simply regular engineering units. They are bridging engineers. Their icon if you are not using mil symbols looks like little fire trucks (hook and ladder). You will bridge building supplies listed in their equip tab.

(2) Around page 50 in the manual.

Page 50 in my manual is blank. :)

Ah, here it is: it does say that bridge engineers will upgrade an existing bridge. Thanks, all.

If you check the "Equip" tab for engineer units, some will have an item for "Bridge Building Capacity" listed at the top. You have to have a unit with a BBC of at least 1 to construct any bridge, since this represents the basic equipment and material required. Engineer units without a BBC can assist (speed up) construction but will not be able to construct a bridge on their own as they don't have the necessary materials.

Thanks!

One more Q: do any units have a bridge building capacity of greater than 1? Just curious.

Yes, BBC is set in the ScenMaker so it can be different for any scenario. Only engineer units can carry bridges however.
