I opted to omit the modem on mine.....hadn't used one in a long time.

You can do it fairly cheap. I replaced my motherboard and chipset for about $50. It's a generic motherboard with a 1.3 GHz athlon thunderbird chipset.

Get alot of RAM too........RAM is the best thing you can do for your machine.

Alot of your better cases will come with its own power supply.
Makes building alot simpler.

Unless you find good deals on each of them sepertly you can probably save money buying a case with an included power supply.

Start with:

Case with inbuilt Power Supply, enough slots, good airflow.
Processor
Motherboard - you can get some with inbuilt video/audio/lan. I would go for an inbuilt lan and audio, unless you're into real high-fi sound.
RAM
Hard Drive
Video card
3.5 Inch floppy
CD Drive

Other things you can add:

Int modem
Extra fans
Cool flashing neon lights
2nd Bay DVD/RW

Accessories:

Keyboard
Mouse
Monitor
Speakers
OS

for a case i might be using this

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDe ... 071&depa=1

it has a cool design, plus itsin my favorite color

a power supply included

and theres a temperature gauge (which is a big part of why i want it)

is this a good choice for a case?

o

wen u say inbuilt sound etc, do u mean that the sound and video cards are already in it?

(noob question?)

has anyone here ever seen speed 2? [:'(]

if so, is that stuff about copper poisoning true?

Yes, don't skimp on two items. Go ahead and put one gig of ram into your machine. Memory is cheap and you will need it sooner or later. If you are a gamer-especially sims or action games. Get a good video card. 124MB is the minimum. More if you can afford it. Most new games coming out today sort of need that kind of power.

I would go with a Thermaltake or Antec case.
I also wouldnt go with anything less than a 400 watt power supply since you are probably going to be using top of the line parts.

The radeon graphics cards rock all over nvidia cards.....I have the older all-in-wonder card in mine and am really happy with it.

Get a DDR capable board forRAM....it's atually cheaper lately than regular RAM.

And if you are gonna splurge, go with a BIG monitor.....[:D]....mine is 21" and it is great!!!!

i do it every time i go to class lol

as for power supply, should i get a surplus in power?

say i only need 300 watts, but i get 400

wat happens to the other 100?

jus buzzes around waiting for sumthing to pump it into?

i have an early cost estimate

keep in mind that the part list is NOT complete

still need hard drive, floppy drive, speakers mous keyboard, monitor, few other things

case - 150.00
motherboard - 155.00
sound card - 84.00
video card - 228.00
processor - 282.00
dvd rw drive - 103.50
memory - 336.00 ( 512 mb chip times 4 chips)
fans = 245.00 (times 7 fans total)

total so far =

$ 1586.00

im thinking of getting a better processor, tho i have not decided whether to use a pentium or an athlon

thoughts?

im thinking that i can get better deal for fans and memory buy buying in pairs but im not sure. am i right?

What on earth are you going to do with all those fans? The only thing they will do is make a lot of noise. Go with simple fans, one for the processor one for the graphics card (usually built in) and one for the power supply (usually built in).
There should be no need for anything else, unless you absolutely need to overclock things. If for some reason you find that temperatures are getting too high (can't see why they would), you can add more or better fans later.

With a modern computer, overclocking is more or less useless. You will have enough power as it is, and the bottleneck for performance won't be processor speeds anyway.

I use a huge power sink instead of a fan for the graphics card, and a cheap but very quiet fan for the processor. It keeps the noice level to a minimum.

Yeah, that's a little crazy.

Go for stuff that may not be top of the line right now. It's usually a magnitude cheaper from the brand new stuff.

Further advice:

Get a really good processor. You get much better computer lifetime and value for money if you spend it on a good processor is much better spent than getting excessive amounts of RAM, unnecessary fans etc.

I've build 3 PCs for myself over the years, and in the end it is always the processor that makes it necessary to build a new one. Everything else, such as RAM, fans, video cards etc, can be upgraded or replaced when necessary. YWhen eventually you want to upgrade the processor you'll find that you mainboard won't be compatible with the latest generation of processors. If you have to get a new mainboard, you might as well get a whole new computer. Stay away from overclocking, it produces mimimal performance gains compared to the money spent on cooling and the extra noice it will produce.

I'd suggest 1GB memory, a 100+ GB harddisk (must be at least 7200 RPM) and no additional fans (use the ones that come with the processor, video card and case).

hmm

i see

well, 7 fans may be a bit overboard, but i just want to make sure i dont have to worry about cooling

ill proabbly put in at least 3 or 4

and save the rest for later

im probably going to get at least 1 gigabyte of ram

and a very good sized and fast hard drive

ive learned from this ancient abacus that 1 thing u can NEVER have too much of, is memory and disk space

so, those are 2 things that i definitely wont skimp on [:D]
