RE: Germany - Summer 1942
Some questions for you:
1) Are encyrcled units able to move&attack.
If they are not, you could just move out thos 15 corps from Poland with the hope to surround the next turn the 6 Russian corps in Eastern Poland!
2) What a serious general would have began Barbarossa in Autumn?? [:-][:D]
Just joking, but is Russian winter and spring un-froze modelled in the game (maybe all land units can move at max by 1)

Oops, I forgot one!
3) There's anything you can do to bring Spain into Axis? If you are able to seal off the Meditterrean conquering Gibriltar you'll be able to use all those unit that are garrisoning coastal Mediterrean regions.

There's NO diplomatic or political model built into this game - which may be good or bad thing depending on your taste (personally I don't miss it). The only way of bringing the Spain to Axis camp is to invade it.

The Invasion of Japan
It only takes 1 artillery in an area to completely halt an unsupported amphibious invasion. JA did not have artillery in those 3 areas i landed in. He did have arty in the Tokyo area, and i had no chance of landing there.
When artillery is in an area to oppose the Transports you need to be more meticulous and capture areas that are in air range of your eventual target then start hitting the area with air. Then when the (coastal) arty is suprressed you can come in with your troops. Of course Carriers can make this job a little easier.

we are playing this game with Simple Supply rules, so "circled" units can always consume supply from the supply bucket, no matter where they are (like Germans in Scotland[:-])
with advanced supply rules, you need to plan a little better and put supply where you (may) need it.

Komrade Bekket has been appointed Chief of NKVD frontline forces - so his job will be to insure the patriotic spirit among the frontline troops remains at the highest level, even if he'd have to resort to machine gunning the deserters and defeatists! That should help him relieve some tension for not being able to participate in the beta test of the latest Katyusha MRL.
The order is given: Not one step backwards! Hey, you, I saw you!

isn't it a little 'gamey'
Grill it up right and there's no gamey flavor at all.
(I'm still reminiscing about the Buffalo I grilled last night. [:)])
Seriously, both the invasion of Japan and England seem to be more about mistakes by the owning player than about gamey tactics. If someone leaves you such a huge opening, how can you not take advantage of it?
Re Russian Winter, I recall Joel mentioning that it was accounted for in the game, guess we will see how that impacts Germany, since they have no choice but to attack before the Soviets are unfrozen.
Very, very cool to see the Soviets in the far east unfrozen like that.

RE: Spring 1942
I apologize if I missed this from one of the many previous posts, but do units gain experience through combat which would help in battle resolutions?....I was thinking that if this was the case, seasoned German troops would be transferred to the Russian front to participate in the inevitable war...if there are no experience modifiers, then it really wouldn't matter....

Partially quoting from ALPHA (!) documentation - I quote only modifiers regarding winter and frozen area rules.
Modifiers to the evasion rating of a unit being fired at are as follows (these are cumulative):
-1 when defending in a frozen area that is attacked (surprise rule)
-1 when a German unit in a cold weather Russian Nationality area during the first winter turn following a German declaration of war with Russia
+1 when attacking a frozen area (surprise rule)
+1 when defending in a cold weather area during a winter (Jan/Feb/Mar) turn (unless a German unit in a cold weather Russian Nationality area during the first winter turn following a German declaration of war with Russia)
+1 when defending in a cold weather Russian Nationality area and shot at by a German unit during the first winter turn following a German declaration of war with Russia.
Mind you - "frozen" in the points above does not mean frozen as in "ice cube" sense, it means frozen as in "cannot move" - ie. what European Russia is now.
I expect these rules to come into play in the next turn (with German attack), and in turn after that (winter). If I understand these rules right, it should be advantageous for me to go into counter attack immediatelly after German attacks (of course, all this assuming he is going to attack next turn).

RE: Spring 1942
All I can imagine at the moment is to strike & strike hard - keep moving forward & try to do enough damage to forstall any major counteroffensives before mid-1944 or so....If Japan folds within the year (and it just might) - I'll be faced with the full force of the US & Russia knocking at my door....at least with England out of the picture I won't have to worry about strategic bombing anytime soon.
Its going to come down to resources & more importantly supply - Russia has a huge army, but can they afford the supplies to move it.....

RE: Spring 1942
Back on the Winter being the first turn of the year thing... I think I remember that at some point it was mentioned that turns would be named by months instead of seasons. This would make particular sense given that 'Winter' is 'Summer' in the other hemisphere, and that in certain parts of the world the 'traditional' seasons are done away with altogether and 'Monsoon' and 'non Monsoon' used.
In order to avoid confusion and to integrate the entire planet a bit better the developers might want to reconsider using months to name turns.

Thank you for your answer, comrade Oleg!

Good to hear there are rules about surprise attacks and cold winters!
Good luck for your Great Patriotic War!

RE: Spring 1942
There's no screenshot to post that adds anything to the situation for Japan. The only thing I could do was try to hit the troops/transports within range, and stop them from getting transferred to the fight against Germany (coming soon to a continent near you!)
Honshu is building 5 militia, as that's all that I had resources for, and will probably fall this turn, taking me out of the game.
*makes notes on what not to do as Japan*

With our Far Eastern forces finally unfrozen, we immediatelly attack both Manchuria and Korea, overrunning Japanese defenses, as we did 3 years ago, at Nomonhan.

Not only that, but according to the rule:
"If an action causes the Soviet Union to be at war with Japan, the Central and Eastern zones are immediately unfrozen."
Thing to note is "Central zones" - that means Russia from Urals to the Pacific Ocean is now at war - European part of SU remains frozen.
So, "soft underbelly" of Russia is not so soft anymore. We immediatelly reinforced our troops in Turkmenistan, bordering on Iran, and are planning future invasion of Iran.
(Note that unfrozen areas are in darker shade of brown - frozen areas are of lighter color, it actually looks better than on this picture because I scale all my screenshots to 80%).

We also decided to launch invasion of Afghanistan (some 40 years ahead of schedule [:D][:D]) thus linking with our allies in India! We will invite Brits to some tea in Kabul.
Note that pro-Axis forces in Iran now face tough opposition on the north.
