New to Real Time Wargames

Post by Jeffery1965 »

Will be getting this game soon and has not ever play a real time wargame before ...

My wargames history has been turn base all the while starting from the Panzer General to Steel Panther and finally settle on Panzer Campaign Series (HPS).. ... although I never been good in playing them ..till to date I am still confuse about the supply and command rules ...

So where do I fit in , will I like this game ? Try Uncommon Valor once ..nearly fainted ...anyway the game is on the way ..hope that this will be the new begining for me in real time wargames ..

Cheers

Well, if you find the pace a bit quick you can always run the game at the slowest speed or even pause before issuing orders. If you find the 'command structure' a bit much you can micro-manage to your hearts content. If the concept of an 'orders delay' doesn't appeal then you can always turn it off.

Of course doing this will not reveal the games true qualities but what it does do is give you a shallow learning curve as you 'get into' the game. I have Uncommon Valour and I find it a bit uninvolving really although it does have a lot of depth. HTTR is nothing like it really[:)].

Jeff,

Greetings!

There are three areas in which you will need to get comfortable in order to really get into HTTR.

(1) Unlike other games, HTTR does dictate your level of interaction with units. You can go between the full extremes of macro and micro management. However, ideally you will need to find an optimal balance. This balance will be dictated by your:

(a) Your personal preferences.

(b) The particular situation you are handling. This can easily vary in a single scenario by location and/or time.

(c) The reality that there are things best delegated to the AI and other things which are best hand crafted by you.

(2) Dealing with order delays. Although you can fully disable this feature, you'll be missing part of the beauty of the game. Initially, it can be a bit daunting as it is not simply as clear cut as waiting X turns for a process to begin. But it will become second nature in all your thinking; sort of like pre-heating the BBQ before putting the steaks on.

(3) The lack of clear un-ambiguous decision point indicators. Throughout game play, actions by you will be required. However, the game will not pause and issue a message, "Commander, they are massing for an attack on our West flank; what do you want to do? [select one] (a) order an arty barrage (b) reinforce our secondary line (c) have our armor mount a spoiling attack into their flank or rear ..." It will be up to you to figure out when a point is reached that requires your intervention and exactly what that intervention should be. Correspondingly, you will also need to figure out when not to disrupt things and simply let things run their course based on your earlier orders.

---

You can see my stickied thread up above, "Top: HTTR (mini-guide): Tutorial, AAR, tips!". It will give you some ideas about getting up to speed in these three areas.

Have fun!

Welcome Jeffery. You'll fit in just fine. Relax, don't worry. The good thing to know is that you can always come here for help if you get stuck and for a little friendly banter. Start with the Tutorials, then the smaller scenarios and gradually work up to the big scenarios and campaigns. If you get stuck just drop us a post.[:)]

You'll find the fit between the two methods and series fine. Because HTTR operates with an order hierachy/delay the continuous time engine suits it to a tee. What I like is the way that by the time your units reach a location previously out of sight, a once indicated enemy presence (based on prior overall intel) may be totally wrong and no enemy may in fact be there. A nice touch of suspense.
