No return air attacks on your carriers around pearl???

I know you knock out the airfield at Pearl. Looking at the Map screen shots on the WITP web site, Is there only one airfield in the Hawaii Islands?

Hi, All Allied players in PBEM should just go ahead and assume the IJN is going to stay around PH longer then 1 attack. All ships at sea should therefore avoid moving towards PH or moving into areas the IJN CV can move to. There is little the PH air groups can do about it. However the ships in port have two choices.

1. Try to get to the IJN CV hex during night move for night surface battle.

2. Try to run south to be out of air range when am air phase rolls around.

Now the IJN has to make up it's mind what it is going to do. If it tries to attack the damaged ships in port it will not attack the surface TF's. If it sets to Naval Attack the damaged ships avoid further damage.

The way the game is constructed, only one airbase per hex is represented. It is
supposed to be a combination to the capabilities of all airbases in the hex.

One can set some of KBs attack squadrons to port attack and some to naval; there surely is enough to go around....looks to me like that is what Admiral DadMan has done on turn 2.

PH eats about 30-40 aircraft per attack. You can not keep it up for long, and sinking ships that are in a size 10 port with repair yard is *very* tough. If you do not get the float damage over 100 during the attack, the port will save the ship. I have done a couple runs where I stayed for about 6 turns, it got me 1 extra BB for all the aircraft lost.

To give you an example, I have had first turns where 6 BB's sunk, I have had turns where none sunk. Staying *might* make up for the zero sunk, you really have to decide based on what you score with the turn one hits. Taking the ships to 99% SYS while not sinking them is *just* as effective as a sunk except you do not get the points. A 99 SYS will take *years* to repair in the best conditions (fleet hq, repair yard, multiple AR's, size 10).

I know each hex can have only one airbase but is there more than one airbase in the Hawaii Islands at the start of war?

No, the airbase just like the port is a representation of all the facilities in the hex. Most air bases had multiple fields, making it tough to close them down for any length of time. You will notice that closing a hex down in WitP is darn near impossible now. You can seriously hurt the facilities which dramatically reduce repairs, but it does not stop the repaired aircraft from coming after you. [;)]

I think the question is... are there other airbases (or for that matter other ports) in the Hawaiian Island chain, or only the set located at or around Pearl. If so how large are they?

It's obvious Pearl Harbor is representing all the facilities in the hex as Frag stated. For gaming purposes, I can understand NAS Pearl Harbor also representing Hickam & Ewa due to their close vicinity. But what about Wheeler, Bellows, Haleiwa and my favorite place Kaneohe? One airbase can't be expected to sufficiently model the capabilities from these other airfields too.

Personally I'd like to have the NAS at Kaneohe available, but I guess it would be difficult squeezing all these locations from a 44mile long x 30mile wide Island into a 60nm hex. Other than maybe providing a more interesting first turn, these other airfields wouldn't provide much use throughout the remainder of the game.

OH! Thats what you meant! [:D]

Hawaii consists of 6 locations that can be built up. PH is just the major port/airfield. When the game starts, you also have a base unit at Hilo and Lahaina but they are not really built up.

Hello...

I am currently the Allied player on turn two of a 1941 campaign (Historical 1st Turn, Surprise On). The airfields on Oahu
are closed down, but I have moved some float planes to Hihu, Kona, Hilo and Moloaki, for anti-submarine duty (there are scads of Japanese submarines in the area). I also moved some P-26A fighters to Hilo, with long range CAP orders. Lahaina has a nice size 3 airfield and plenty of ground crews (I had to ferry a few ground crews to the other locations by PBY, except for Hilo, which has a naval air station and one transferred PBY group), so I sent some Marine F4F-3 Wildcats and Dauntless dive bombers over there. I gave the dive bombers naval interdiction orders and the Wildcats escort orders. I also sent some B-18A Bolas to Lahaina for anti-submarine patrols. I left the rest of the aircraft at Pearl Harbor. The Catalinas at Pearl can still fly, even though the airfields are closed, because they can launch and recover in the bay.

Hope this Helps...

Hello admirial,
Can you explain why you hate playing as the Jap?
Becuase I am ignorant of the history.

I guess I really don't hate it. It's more likely that I hate myself for not devoting 12 Mogami-esqe hours to making the first turn. [:D]
