I am transformed!

Post by MarkShot »

Well, this is not a strictly an HTTR message, but it does relate to HTTR in a way.

For the last few years, I have always maintained that I am flight sim nut who had strayed a little bit to play some strategy ground combat wargames.

I played air combat flight sims from 1992 to about 2001 and from time to time would experiment a little and try something else. In 2001 due to an injury, and arthritis, etc... I sharply curtailed my flying and for the first time put some serious time into playing a wargame, CMBO.

Well, last night, I took the big step and removed quite a few auto racing and flight sims off my PC that have been there for a couple of years since I purchased it. I finally admitted to myself that despite occassionally trying to race or fly every few months, that it is over. Despite being quite sad while running uninstall utilities and deleting files, I had a realization. I realized that over the last three years I have become a wargamer. A few well known games have transformed my interests and focus. Not to mention the last couple of years of being a beta tester for Panther Games.

I have been transformed. I now, for the first time, step forward and acknowledge that "I am a wargamer."

{Anyone reading this needn't worry, I am not going to go around the forum hugging people. :) }

"I am a wargamer."

Careful Mark, in some circles that is the same as saying "I am a barbarian."

[;)]

I will say, it has been frustrating, interesting, and at times fun to watch you develop as a serious wargamer over that past few years.

It is funny that over time you basically loose complete interests in anything else. I am in the same boat. I picked up a 737 upgrade for one of my many flight sims, ran it, was impressed, then dove back into a wargame. Sitting here wondering why I bought it now. It's not even installed.

I hear you. I was a Falcon 4 fanatic. But I haven't looked at it in a year. I have this idea that I might one day get back into it, but serious, grognard-level wargames are all I care about now (despite still sucking at them).

As a 'late comer' to computer gaming (I bought my first game 4 years ago) I started out with 'Civ2' and 'Age of Empires'. I had no real intention of getting back into wargaming and in any case the UK magazines didn't really cover 'proper' wargames. I acquired 'Sudden Strike' and liked it quite a bit[:D], read about RDOA on a website and was interested, CDV published it in Europe[&o] and I bought it. It's been downhill ever since - UV, KP, TOAW, CM, Close Combat - huge dents in my wallet. Cheers Dave, it's all your fault[:D]

I had actually purchased CMBO due to the rave reviews, but despite reading the manual I couldn't even win at the tutorial or other tiny missions while playing them over and over again.

But then the project I was managing got very, very slow. So, while waiting for users to submit problem reports, I started visiting the BTS forums; particularly the tips forum. It was an amazing education. The quality and wealth of information was truely remarkable.

All of a sudden, I understood the basics of ground warfare. I had reached the point where I could win scenarios on the first play through. Then, Madmatt (one of the moderators) announced the development of a new game, RDOA. I downloaded the demo. I didn't do too well with it, but that didn't bother me as I had tremendous faith in BTS to turn out a quality product and I knew that my poor results were mainly a result of my own ignorance.

So, I had come to scratch the surface of small scale combat. Thus, I pre-ordered RDOA, since I wanted to learn about ground combat on a larger scope. Once I got the game, it took me a long time to really hold my own against the AI. Unlike for CMBO, there wasn't any crutches to help me get up to speed; just perserverance.

Besides ignorance my other problem adapting to RDOA was the lack of 3D. Coming from the flight sim world and CMBO, I had real immersion problems to begin with. But the game really began to grow on me and the concepts slowly revealed themselves. I am still not quite sure why Dave invited me to be a beta tester. However, I have a sneaking suspicion it was a devious was to plan to irritate Bil. :)

It was due to the difficulty that I had mastering the basics of this genre that accounts for some my efforts here to produce tutorial material for others. As a gaming genre, wargaming offers some superb products and associated intellectual challenge/excitement. But it can be quite a learning curve to surmount for someone who is totally new.

I remember Mark that at the time my intellect said don't ask this guy to become a beta tester. He's a military ignoramous. Yet intuitively in my heart I knew it would be a good thing. And time has proven that to be right. Well done Mark.

BTW Bil needs no deviousness to irritate him. [;)] In any event he's a big boy who has pleasantly surprised us with his ability to adapt and get along with a whole range of people he would normally walk away from. Ain't it so Bil? [:)] See, life's one great adventure...wouldn't be dead for quids! [:D]

I can relate to what you are saying Mark [:)]

I am a true video gamer, and I can play almost any kind of video games. In the last year, I have played extensively Splinter Cell, Call of Duty, Need for Speed Underground, HPS Battle of the Bulge and Middle East 67, Sim City 4, RalliSport Challenge, Rainbow 6 Raven Shield, Madden NFL 2004, NHL 2004, Combat Mission BB and, of course, HTTR.

I have also played occasionally XIII, Korsun Pocket, Blitzkrieg, Armored Task Force, SuperPower, Europa Universalis 2 and Hearts of Iron.

So my tastes are varied, although I admit I am not a big fan of RPG and fantasy universes.

However, one thing keeps coming back, over and over again, the only real continuity of my "gaming life": wargames, especially HTTR since 6 months. I guess it's because I like history and politics, and the history of warfare and wars in general.

After becoming a wargamer though, the next step is to become a grognard! Or is it the next step ? [:D]

The next step is to become a pedant. Some years afer that, grognarditis sets in. Once you've caught that, there is no hope in spite of medical advances. Stop now ... look what happened to Bil. [:-]

Mark, thanks for all you've done for this game series, it wouldn't have been the same without you.

There is something which I have always wondered about.

I know grognard means a hardcore wargamer, but what is the derivation of this word?

Thanks.

It indeed comes from the French language. The French verb "grogner" means to grumble, to mumble your insatisfaction.

In wargaming terms, a grognard is a hardcore wargamer bent on ultra-realsim. The grognard is always unsatisfied with his wargames and always criticize everything.

I'm here often, but only post occasionally. So much of what you guy's talk about when it comes to strategy, numbers, kill ratios, defense -in- depth and so goes right over my head. It's funny, I've read damn near every book on WWII the European theatre and I thought I was a qualified Armchair General. To make a long story short, HTTR along with the strategy guide has humbled me. I'm not knocking any other company because I have darn near every WWII strategy game out there, and enjoyed many of them, but HTTR puts things into perspective. Anyone watch "IKE-countdown to D-Day"??? Now, isin't that how you feel when you play HTTR? YOU have given the GO.....[&o][&o][&o]

I've never commanded troops, but I have managed many project teams. The whole delay, delegation, master planning, and having confidence in a plan found in HTTR seems very real world to me based on my experiences trying to get projects developed.

This forum is a good place to ask questions if you have them. Although not as busy as some other gaming forums, the members here are a good natured crowd and don't display the arrogance that is sometimes found in expert communities.
