Also, Japan enjoyed complete surprise historically, while the Allies had a confused, surprised command structure. With Mr. Frag in charge there is no division in command to cause confusion among the Allied ships.

With that said, however, Japanese operational losses in aircraft are extremely high, with total Japanese aircraft losses aproaching that of the Allies in the first two months. Hopefully, we can attribute that to Mr. Frag's knowledge of the campaign he has played in the past, and so has positioned his forces accordingly.

Japanese shipping losses are also 4x (111) higher than the Allies' shipping losses. Historically, Japan lost only 22 merchant ships plus 3 destroyers up to April, 1942 (other ships were damaged but not lost).

I give "Mr Frag" credit for combat losses of all Japanese ships and aircraft, and his agressive style but, most operational loss should be non-combat. I buy the high loss if ships (AK's) transporting aircraft are sunk but, I've seen no reports to back this up. It's been clear from the begining that one of the keys for Japan winning the game is how well pilots are managed? High aircraft loss equals pilot loss, will the Japanese air power become ineffective in early 42? 1942 is the best is gets for Japanese air power, and I don't think it's done very well in the first three months of the war!

I'm not saying the game should be delayed, but more testing vs the AI should be done and the high operational loss should be looked at for the patch. Something I would do is print out the experince,moral,mission, and range flown for AI airgroups and see what it's doing for the first few months of the war. Maybe the AI is always flying missions at max range, something most human players would not do.

PAD and VON ROM. Not sure what figures you are drawing from in your discussion of "operational losses",
but during WWII Operational (non-combat) losses averaged about 10% per month overall. With all the
base transfers that the Japanese need to do in the early expansion phase it would be surprising if their
operational losses weren't high.

Hi, Ops loss does not always mean a pilot was lost. In fact no loss of an aircraft means the loss of a pilot. Although in air to air pilots have a better chance of surviving the closer the combat is to a friendly hex or TF.

Just a point to make as the allied player.

I notice that you took advantage of the Japanese opening moves.
After all, you did know exactly where there army and navy units would attack.
I believe the only true way, to play as the allies against the Japanese AI, is too have no first round movement or deployment, for the allies.

On December 7, 1941 all allied combat units can react to attack, just not make any war plans for engagement.

but during WWII Operational (non-combat) losses averaged about 10% per month overall. With all the
base transfers that the Japanese need to do in the early expansion phase it would be surprising if their

The operational aircraft losses are from Mr.Frag's 2-month summary of his AAR so far:

As you can see in the first two months Japanese aircraft operational losses are at 290 planes, or almost the total number of planes lost at Midway (which crippled the Japanese naval air arm).

Prior to Midway, the Japanese pilots were considered the best in the Pacific theatre.

Fighter-pilot training in pre-war Japan was a highly selective process that required very high academic and physical standards.The Japanese Naval Air Force (JNAF) entered combat en masse with the start of the China War in July 1937. They fought against Russian and Chinese airmen and honed their skills in the Claude Type 96 fighter. The dress rehearsal in China gave the IJNA pilots an edge over their American counterparts.

During the Pacific War, the Japanese steadily lost ground, starting with the disaster at Midway, where they lost four fleet carriers, more than 250 aircraft and about 10% of their veteran fighter pilots. Because of this tremendous loss, flight training went on a mass-production basis. Courses in navigation and parachute-packing, which every pre-war pilot knew, were scrapped. Consequently, pilot quality suffered. "Our losses increased due to the depreciation in our pilot's flying ablilties,' stated Capt. K. Kanai, who was stationed in Rabaul. "Our training program was accelerated to the extent that our pilots were not adequately trained. We needed more pilots. It is my opinion that combat losses in the Solomon's plus losses from malaria were the main reason for speeding up the program."

Many pilots in the South Pacific fell victim to bad weather, improper aircraft maintenance and other non-combat factors because of the poor training. This would probably account for high (say 10%) operational losses. But I am wondering if this should primarily occur after Midway because of newer, less well-trained Japanese pilots?

The General is not pleased.

Most of the comments on Japanese air losses have been about operational losses, but it is striking to me that the Allies have an (almost) 2-1 advantage in air-air combat. Isn't this a bit odd? Seems like it should be the other way round. (and this from a certified member of the Allied-fanboy club).

I'm not saying the game should be delayed, but more testing vs the AI should be done and the high operational loss should be looked at for the patch.

I am now officially baffled I fail to see what you think is wrong with the Japanese operational losses? Look at the total number of sorties flown the operational losses are running at 0.17% that is less than 2/10ths of 1 percent of all sorties flown. Amazingly low as compared to the historical op-loss rate.

A few things to keep in mind are the AI tends to fly missions at longer range; the AI also will fly many more missions than a human would ever do and a combat loss or operational loss does not mean the automatic loss of the pilot. Many more pilots survive in Witp than in UV. Also do not fixate on a single number look at the whole picture.
