I notice that you took advantage of the Japanese opening moves.
After all, you did know exactly where there army and navy units would attack.
I believe the only true way, to play as the allies against the Japanese AI, is too have no first round movement or deployment, for the allies.
On December 7, 1941 all allied combat units can react to attack, just not make any war plans for engagement.
I have to agree with this.
The Japanese achieved their stunning success because of surprise. Against the AI, the Allied player should not be able to conduct any offensive operations in the opening move. Or at least provide this as an option to toggle. [:)]
ORIGINAL: pad152
I'm not saying the game should be delayed, but more testing vs the AI should be done and the high operational loss should be looked at for the patch.
Pad and VR
I am now officially baffled I fail to see what you think is wrong with the Japanese operational losses? Look at the total number of sorties flown the operational losses are running at 0.17% that is less than 2/10ths of 1 percent of all sorties flown. Amazingly low as compared to the historical op-loss rate.
A few things to keep in mind are the AI tends to fly missions at longer range; the AI also will fly many more missions than a human would ever do and a combat loss or operational loss does not mean the automatic loss of the pilot. Many more pilots survive in Witp than in UV. Also do not fixate on a single number look at the whole picture.
Hi.
The Japanese pilots are more experienced, yet suffer a higher non-combat loss rate than the Allies (who were very inexperienced).
This may be due to Mr. Frag's great knowledge of the game and his proper management of his aircarft.
But this is the cream of IJN aircraft and pilots. If non-combat in the first 3 months of the war takes this high a toll, then what happens when the poorly trained IJN pilots come on board?
At Midway, Japan's loss of 275 aircraft and pilots was considered a disaster. Yet, after 3 months, it has lost 414 aircraft for non-combat reasons.
This is what players are concerned about: the AI's ability to properly manage its aircraft, and to have proper CV coverage.
I notice that you took advantage of the Japanese opening moves.
Just what exactly are you talking about? I did not take advantage of anything. You can't. I have fought for each and every piece of real estate, loosing ships and troops that I could have saved had I run.
Historical first turn means exactly that.
The game starts and you can't do anything until Dec 8th.
At Midway, Japan's loss of 275 aircraft and pilots was considered a disaster.
The disaster was not the number of men and machines lost, rather the disaster was which particular men and machines they were, i.e. the best that Japan had, and irreplacable...had 275 IJA bombers been lost in China in 6/42 (and for all I know there may have been), we would not be speaking of it today.

I'll give you credit for the high ship loss.
Japan in air to air combat lost 653 vs 362 aircraft. This is when Japan is the best air power in the Pacific, the allies are already wining the air war!
Japan has lost over a 1300 aircraft and over 200 ships in the first 3 months of the war, this makes midway look like a bump in the road!
The AI is not managing it's air power correctly! Japan's airpower will be come totally ineffective by Jume of 42, long before the P38's or F4U's show up.
Japan lost 88 aircraft in an evil little base jump just outside Singapore. Japan has also lost a couple hundred aircraft at Mandalay, which would fall to most of you, but I knew what was coming so I had every unit there was in India already on the way. Had I not pulled two P-40B groups out of PI and stuck them there and managed to get them upgraded, Japan would have steam rolled over me. I am currently keeping at least two of the divisions unable to attack each turn with ground attacks with fighter-bombers. Had I not saved *every* base unit from Victoria Point all the way up, I would not be able to have the size of the air groups here and the AI would have killed me quickly.
The AI expected to win here, and it didn't. Based on the distances involved, it takes a *long* time to bring in more troops. In the mean time, I have a major advantage of supply, support, air support, constant bombing from multiple bases and range is most certainly on my side as I am attacking in the hex I am in.
I should probably be playing on a harder level, but you guys wanted to see the AI which has completely kicked me out of the SRA and I theoretically know what I am doing. [:D]

Thank you for posting this AAR versus the computer, it is reall cool!
A few questions -
Why did Bataan fold so quickly? Should you not of made astand at clark Field? Was that the issue? Did you have any troops digging in in Bataan prior to the fall of clark? I saw Manila fall rather quickly to light Japaness forces, if you were going to put a stand outside of Battan wouldn't of Manila been better since it has its own suppy?
Looks like you are having a great game versus the AI! Is Burma the only place you have been able to hold up the AI? Looks like DEI and PI are folding faster than historical though.

Due to changes in the scenarios, Manila is no longer a supply source. Supply has been spread out more in PI. Another new rule that came into play is that the various resources stop producing once enemy units enter the hex. My logic was to pull supply into Clark and hold there as long as possible. It finally fell with less then 380 supply in the hex. Had I elected to hold in Bataan instead, I would have given up a size 6 air base to Japan to bombard me from. One of the reasons the ops losses are as high as they are is that I camped the big air bases forcing Japan to have the smaller ones and take higher losses. Frankly, I was surprised I held out that long.

I am about to loose the rest of Java now, just too many troops coming from too many places. On the plus side, I have 5 CV's at Noumea and a large number of ships. 700,000 fuel is unloading at Sydney (finally!!!) so I can move ships around. I lost a bunch of ships due to fuel issues trying to get them down from Derby. There is a massive sub net around Oz. [:(]
Mandalay will hold. I am a few turns away from more armor and have two more divisions on the way.
A large number of troops are about a week out from Noumea. The USA is really held back by a lack of early game shipping. You have lots of AK's for hauling supply around and I have moved a couple million by now, but you are critically short on AP's to such a level that you can not risk them early. Due to the new way units are broken down in load factors, AP's are *mandatory* for moving troops while guns/tanks go on AK's until later when you get the million odd LS(?).
You're doing a great job so far.
Since you have played so many times before, I would expect you to do better over the IJN in the early phases of the Pacific War - heheh
Plus, there are two higher difficulty levels.
Please don't take my earlier posts as criticism - they are mainly "investigative" posts to find out how well the AI (as Japan) is doing.
In the first 3 months of the war in this AAR:
Japan has lost over 200 ships (historically they lost under 30 ships at this point in time).
Japan has lost over 1,300 aircraft (more than the Allies, and far higher than they did historically up to this point). This loss represents almost an 8% loss of total historical aircraft production for Japan in the years 1939, 1940 and 1941 combined.
The beginning of the war is when Japan should be at its best; what will happen in 1943?
So, Frag, what are your conclusions about the AI? More importantly, where are the U.S. carriers? You will be relieved from duty if you don't get them into action soon.
The two things I think I've seen from the AARs:
1. It looks like the air routine is bleeding Japan white. As mentioned, the AI is making attacks that a human wouldn't. I'm guessing high fatigue is causing a lot of the Japanese casualties. I'm with some of the other posters that think the air war may be over by the end of '42 at this rate. The following attacks are, I think, indicative of pushing too hard (granted, these are selected specifically to show what appear to be worn-down and exhausted units making air attacks):

G4M1 Betty x 6
Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 2 destroyed, 5 damaged

Day Air attack on 18th UK Division, at 33,30
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 3
G3M Nell x 4
G4M1 Betty x 12
Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 15
P-40E Warhawk x 31
2. I've seen a lot of AKs, minesweepers, and other riff-raff blown out of the water by some marginal LBA of the Allied. It looks to me like the AI has a tendency to send a lot of support stuff unescorted and without LRCAP into range of Allied air power.
But, I only think I see this. Frag would have a better idea.
