A couple of points ...
#1 Based on what I am seeing here, I have asked 2by3 to adjust the ops losses downwards for the AI. Gary has done so. Basically, the AI needs a boost because it does not stand down the non-essential aircraft that a Human player would have training. This applies to CAP & Search type only. These types of non-essential losses are draining the pool of pilots that are needed for front line service, which is the reason you are seeing me doing rather well.
#2 Ops losses are actually going to be a large portion of all losses in the game for both sides. The distances flown directly impact these loss rates. The player on the offensive will generally bear the brunt of the losses because they have to fly to meet the enemy. You *will* see this reverse as the Allies start projecting their power.
#3 The higher level of difficulty is for Mogami only. I doubt anyone else could stand it [:D]

#1 Based on what I am seeing here, I have asked 2by3 to adjust the ops losses downwards for the AI. Gary has done so. Basically, the AI needs a boost because it does not stand down the non-essential aircraft that a Human player would have training. This applies to CAP & Search type only. These types of non-essential losses are draining the pool of pilots that are needed for front line service, which is the reason you are seeing me doing rather well.
This is one solution but it may not be the best. Find out what the problem is before you implement a solution. Have 2by3 games add print outs for the experince, moral, mission, range, losses for airgroups, then run the computer AI the first couple of months. Then looking at the data you may find out its moral or experince, not the range. Ask your self what would you do given the same data with the air group. Now with all of this data someone should be able to come up with rules for airgroups suchs as
experince + moral >= 120 (range = max_range)
experince + moral >= 110 (range = max_range -2)
experince + moral >= 100 (range = max_range - (%50 of max range))
experince + moral <= 50 - stand down airgroup
Knowing the data and comming up with rules (What would you do with the same data, should the air group fly, stand down, fly at half ranger?). This is how you build rule sets for an expert system (AI), just giving the computer some bonus base on who complains the most[:D] is not how to build a good computer AI.
Remember; Quick fixes only come back to bite you in the arse later on.
RE: Allied Player vs Japan AI
Morale & experience has sweet bugger all to do with ops losses. They are a function of fatigue and range. Exp simply helps the crashing pilot survive the crash.
Standing down front line air groups is unacceptable. If you think about it for a bit, you'll understand why it cannot be done. All you would do is transfer the losses into ground instead of ops. You might notice that the Allies lost 500 planes because they happened to be sitting on the ground instead of flying.
Because the AI flys all aircraft, needed or not, the *correct* fix is to ensure that the non-essencial type of flights are not eating up the pilots which renders the essencial types available for duties. This is exactly the change that was needed.

You might notice that the Allies lost 500 planes because they happened to be sitting on the ground instead of flying.
Because the AI flys all aircraft, needed or not, the *correct* fix is to ensure that the non-essencial type of flights are not eating up the pilots which renders the essencial types available for duties. This is exactly the change that was needed.
