Regarding op losses, experience really counts, at least in UV. If you have an unit with experienced pilots receiving some newbies, op losses will go up, escepcially in bad weather. It's so hard that in IJN 1943 scen 17 games I sent to the rear area any unit receiving new pilots and only use units where the worst pilot had exp 45.

A better way to deal with these losses, both for AI and PBEM, is to say that no pilot with exp under 40 will fly any mission, if there is another pilot available to fly it. He will train on the ground and gain exp.

Another source of AI unnessecarry op losses in UV is the transports, that are always carrying supplies where they are not so needed. Those units should be used only for emergency, or only in good weather at least.

Because the AI flys all aircraft, needed or not, the *correct* fix is to ensure that the non-essencial type of flights are not eating up the pilots which renders the essencial types available for duties. This is exactly the change that was needed.

Sorry but if this is true, "the computer flys planes not matter what", then there is no AI.

Someone needs to study (look at the data) and then come up with some rules of what it should do and find a way to implement them so the computer has a better way to handle airgroups and pilots, and not just some magic bonus to make the numbers look good.

The Japanese have broken themselves on the anvil of Mandalay. Usual gamey trick of sucking the AI into fighting on your terms. It would be interesting to know the real (not reported) Japanese aircraft losses there from reporting they appear horrendous. If the same airgroups are bringing in new pilots and flying them, it isn't far short of kamikaze in 1942 [:)]

Glad *you* guys think I am doing very well. I am about to loose Singapore, PI is running out of supply. I am holding for the moment in Burma, but thats about it ... The one Brit CL got hammered because it was got hit hard right off and the AI decided to finish it off. Did a great job too because it went down the following turn.

Basically, I am getting kicked everywhere and fighting back as I pull out resources and oil to feed Oz, but I am running out of time.

That should give you an idea of how the AI plays as Japan. One month in and nothing I did really detracted it from it's goals. It is still expanding like a virus inspite of me breaking up 3 major invasion fleets. Not too shabby and there are 2 higher skill levels if you really want to get spanked.

Thanks for putting the hours in.

One thing I noticed is that the AI is not providing its major invasion fleets with a Fleet unit covering force. As you said, 3 invasion fleets were busted up because the Japs had nothing on hand to counter the RN. In other numerous examples I could take from your posts the AI is sending men and ships to the bottom in very quick time because of of either inadequate or no surface escort or a lack of LRCAP.

Is there any coding in place to protect these transports (both supply and invasion)?

If not, the AI is going to get to the point of no ships to supply its bases/industry pretty quickly. The whole show could be over by mid 43.

The IJN just doesn't have the ships to cover all the invasions going on. Thats the reality of the war. You will learn just how tough it is when you play Japan. They simply don't have enough to do the job resulting in you trusting the whims of fate and sending ships with nothing. On the reverse side, the Allied have more escort then they have ships making it tough to get anywhere, but you always have tons of escort protecting it.

The Japanese have broken themselves on the anvil of Mandalay.

Those are the *real* losses and yes, I have broken Japan on Mandalay, but it has still taken the entire SRA and is now busy doing it's job of shipping oil back home to get production going. With me holding in both Singapore and PI as long as I did, I made Japan go short on fuel so you are not seeing much shipping because there is no fuel for them.

Personally, I think the Japanese losses in planes and ships is too high in the first few months of WiTP, even with Mr. Frag's expert knowledge of what is coming and in deploying his forces to anticipate it.

The Allied command structure was disjointed, caught by surprise, and took months to recover.

The Allied forces were at a disadvantage, since the Japanese were using highly experienced, battle-hardened troops and pilots. The opening months of the war saw the cream of the Japanese navy, airforce and army attack the Allies.

A few things that might improve the situation:

1) Japanese experience levels could be increased - especially among the pilots

2) The Japanese could be given a "SHOCK" or "SURPRISE" value that would last for the first 5-10 turns (or whatever turns are necessary) which would increase their attack and striking power over the Allies, and which would help overcome even the most experienced player.

3) Providing for even some "ahistorical" air coverage which would help cover Japanese landing craft and ships in the first month or so of the war.

This is the AI and needs help (all AI in games need help), and so I think we should err on the side of caution, and give the Japanese opening moves the surprise and power it had historically.


Brief history of first few months in the Pacific:

Allied forces in Asia, drained of men and materiel by the European conflict, were unable to provide much more than token resistance to the battle-hardened Japanese. Major units of the British fleet were sunk off Malaya on 10th December, and Hong Kong fell on the 25th. United States bases on Guam and Wake Island were lost at around the same time. January saw the invasions of Burma, the Solomons, the Dutch East Indies and New Guinea, and the capture of Manila, Kuala Lumpur and Rabaul. The pace of conquest was rapid: Bali and Timor fell in February 1942, Rangoon and Java in March, and Mandalay at the beginning of May. Meanwhile, Japanese aircraft had all but eliminated British and American air power in South-East Asia, made major raids on northern Australia, and driven the British fleet out of Ceylon.

A few things that might improve the situation:

1) Japanese experience levels could be increased - especially among the pilots

It is very high already.

2) The Japanese could be given a "SHOCK" or "SURPRISE" value that would last for the first 5-10 turns (or whatever turns are necessary) which would increase their attack and striking power over the Allies, and which would help overcome even the most experienced player.

There is a major bonus for landings for the first couple of months already.

3) Providing for even some "ahistorical" air coverage which would help cover Japanese landing craft and ships in the first month or so of the war.

This burns up even more aircraft.

This is the AI and needs help (all AI in games need help), and so I think we should err on the side of caution, and give the Japanese opening moves the surprise and power it had historically
