ORIGINAL: Mr.Frag

If you look through the AAR, you will see multiple times where transports were hit around Rangoon.

While I owned it, I shipped every single unit that existed in India that was not static just as soon as they showed up down the Rangoon to hold the line at Moulmein. I lucked out in that not a single unit was lost. They all got off the ships safely.

At the same time, I also sent every unit that was not at a port racing down the rail lines towards Mandalay.

If you look through the screen shots and count the number of units shown, you will see that I have stripped all of India to do it. I also relocated the Southeast Asia command to be within range of Mandalay. Basically I stacked the deck as far as you can. To make it clear. Mandalay now has a assault strength of a little under 2,000. The entire rest of Southeast Asia has an assault strength of less then 100. [:D]
FRAG Any chance you could post a "screen shot" of your "Mandalay defense"? I'm
still confused on how you pulled it off. In reality, in 1942 there are no rail lines or
highways or even roads connecting Central Burma to India. At best a few trails East-
West. You spoke of sending units "racing down the Rail Lines to Mandalay" but the
only place anyone could get to Mandalay by rail from in 1942 was Rangoon and the
South Coast, which would be "up" the rail line. And where do you base the Southeast
Asia HQ that it can both recieve supply from transports coming into India and support
troops across the mountainous jungle into Burma? I'm puzzled to say the least. It
would seem you've come up with a defense the Brits certainly never thought of..., or
the map and lines of communication on it are a complete farce. Could you elaborate?

Looking at the three screen shots, you will see how barren India is (note the large number of empty bases I have borrowed *everything* from.

Follow the rail in screen 1 down through screen 2. Note the break in screen 3 above Mandalay but *also* notice the rail runs from Rangoon up to Mandalay.

My strategy was to take everything that was not nailed down that had an assault strength and ship it directly to Rangoon right from turn #2 onwards. I got most of the troops down there and held at Moulmein (scooting out of Rangoon to Moulmein as soon as they left the ships).

All *non-combat* groups went down the rail path then crossed the trail path to get to Mandalay through the back way. It took longer, but because of the delay imposed at Moulmein, they had plenty of time.

This got Mandalay built in record time at the expense of every other base in India.

While I was at Moulmein kicking around with 1 division and 1 armored regiment, I spotted another group sweeping in from the rail path just above Moulmein. This is exactly how I steam rolled Mogami and caught him. Having been there and done that and seen the results (allies get creamed), I immediately ran directly to Mandalay, assuming the AI would pause to capture Rangoon which gave me the time to get all the troops out and into Mandalay with a few days to recover fatigue from the march before Japan showed up in the hex.

As soon as they were in range of the poor little hurricanes (max 2), I started non-stop strafing to further hurt them as sap their fatigue, again slowing them down and letting me rest up.

As time went on, I continued to pound them, they continued to bring more, I continued to bring more and in the end, they simply had nothing else available to throw at me. When I finally kicked them out, it was 4 full divisions and a armor regiment plus some Arty on their side, but the non-stop bombardment by all my arty (shown in the other screen shots listing units) had already sapped their strength.

You will also see a chunk of units at Imphal which is just on the other side of the trail (bright red) which was my fallback plan. I did not honestly expect to hold, hence the reason Imphal has air support for about 100 planes that would have been bailing out of Mandalay.

Assuming that the "very dark red" you mention is what's showing up as almost black
on my view, I can see at least ONE big falicy. Have to get out my RR atlases to
check more thoroughly, but the Engineers that built the "Ledo Road" would have
been amazed to find that there was a RR leading from India to Ledo. Boy did they
waste a lot of time, effort, and lives when they could have taken the train.

I creamed the landing force aimed for Gili Gili, but they did not all sink which means it is probably going to unload and Gili Gili is lost. I am now annoyed as the AI is doing *better* then history! [:@]

Apparently I lucked out ... They sunk before unloading a single grunt! Gili Gili lives on!

This should give you a good idea of how close it was. I could not have stayed a single turn longer and still have aircraft over my head! Note DD's only ... all have ASW 6 ratings ... major sub killers. All three groups are config'd for massive sub screening and minimum TF size to keep them off the radar. I am amazed no one has mentioned "how come the jap transports didn't run from the cv's?" [;)] You gotta spot them to run [:D]

I'm also curious what the devs have done to "fix" the Mandalay tactic. Mike Scholl's comments about the railroads suggest one possible fix. Would another possibility involve political points? Maybe some of the British troops in India should be treated like Australian troops in Brisbane? India was the jewel in the crown, after all.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the AI does about Port Moresby and Lunga.

Mike's comment about the rail actually makes no difference. That is *not* the path the troops took. I have explained the fix, scroll back about 6-7 pages.

Hey Frag,

In the total score screen what does Allied/Japanese "Strategic Losses" refer to? Destruction of factories? Production points? Killed civilians?

Also, still a little troubled by the out of whack air-to-air totals. I mean, Buffaloes shooting down Zeroes (consistently)!![:-]

Also a bit disturbed by the lack of AI LRCAP over Gili Gili landings...UV all over again.[8|] (Also wish they'd just called Gili Gili Milne Bay...sounds so much better[:'(])

Finally, can you give us a little insight into Allied production and any changes you might have made at this point. Are the planes really starting to roll out of the factories yet, or are things still in the molasses stage?

Thanks again for this thread. Very interesting.

Hmm, apologies for being dense, but I can't find it. I've looked, even done a search on "Mandalay", and all I can find is that the devs have "corrected" the problem. Anyway, I guess it's too late to suggest a fix, but my preference would be political points.

Still looking forward to what happens with PM and Guadalcanal. Thanks for a great AAR.

Mr. Frag:

In the UV game, the Japanese Coastal Gun Units have 3in/40 Type 88 gun platforms.
According to the spec sheets, this is a dual purpose naval gun.

My question is:

Does this weapon platform also serve as an AA platform, as it does on naval ships.
If so, will this be shown on the base screen as a gun platform, or AA platform, or both.

Thanks!
