Civil War games for PC?

Post by Synjin »

Hi,

I'm looking for a good tactical/strategic Civil War simulation for the PC. I still have my old Gettysburg and Antietam (and Chicamauga and Shiloh!) games from SSI, but they don't work on XP. [:(]

Any suggestions on newer titles? I did a brief google search, but didn't uncover much.

And on the same subject... what's your all-time favorite PC Civil War game you've ever played?

Frank Hunter has a free Civil War Game, available for download, although the site Adanac Studios is down (it will be back up). Maybe it's available from Grognards site or someone else on this forum may know.

I'd thoroughly recommend that game (the full title is "American Civil War: From Sumpter to Appomattox). I bought it when it came it out and had great fun with it, and the free version has ironed out most of the niggles that it had.

My favourite Civil War game, though, would have to be Sierra's Civil War Generals 2. I don't really know why, Age of Rifles was really a better game (AoR was/is superb BTW, if you can find it and get it run under XP - something I never managed to do [:(] ). CWG2 though just did so much right, it played very well (and a battle only took an hour or so), was superbly presented and had loads of atmosphere. I was really pissed when Sierra cancelled CWG 3 [:@]

Excellent game. But no detailed tactical combat.

As far as I am aware there's nothing that successfully combines both the strategic and tactical level of play in one game. Yet.

Well yes they do to an extent, all you need is a little utility called DOSBOX, I play those above SSI games on my system with WinXp installed. DOSBOX sets everything up for you, all you have to do is just setup dosbox when you play those games. The graphics aren't as crisp as they were on the commodore 64, but, all of them are still playable. Heh and if you don't setup a time delay very high, you can play out the full battle of any of those games if you let the AI play both sides within 2 to 5 minutes on a high end system.
You will notice on a high end system, the AI moves very fast and the combat results are very fast, so all your games end up being very fast as well, it all depends on how slow you yourself play. ;)

Oh and in the future Creative Assembly is going to do the American Civil War with their total war engine, so there will finally be an operational/strategic game and then a tactical battle in real time. Now if someone would just do one with an operational/strategic and a tactical turn based game, that's the one I would buy most.
WE/I WANT 1:1 or something even 1:2 death animations in the KOIOS PANZER COMMAND SERIES don't forget Erik! ;) and Floating Paratroopers We grew up with Minor, Marginal and Decisive victories why rock the boat with Marginal, Decisive and Legendary?

I am currently playing Frank's ACW game and am looking for email players. Hopefully there will be a forum page for this game at some point. Maybe I will make one now in the General Forum.
