Sinking a Ship

Post by Xargun »

A pretty basic question, but all the talk about upgrades made me wonder.. What actually sinks a ship ? (Yes I know bombs, torpedoes, etc...) But I mean what damage category ? Fire ? Sys Damage ? or Flooding ?

Fire and flooding I would say.
System would affect the ships performance.
I wonder if it is simulated like that?

Probably the same as UV once a ship hits 100 flt damage it sinks
fire increases sys damage
sys damage affects performance in every area
its possible to have 100 sys damage and still have the ship floating (I have had it done and inflicted that on a series of occasions)

Would fire damage also increase flotation damage? Vision of uncontrolled fire raging on say, a tanker?

Peronsally I thik it would be sys damage and / or flooding damage. Fire cannot truely sink a steel ship. It can gut the hell out of it and make it completely worthless, but it will still float. To me system damage is broken equipment as well as holes in the hull. So if you have 90% or so sys damage to me that means the ship can barely float (due to holes) and probably not able to move under its own power - the pumps are barely keeping up with the water pouring in.

But either way, I was just curious. Does anyone know for sure ?

Water sinks ships. Damage just helps the water work faster [:D]

Fire gets put out so quick that I have never ran a test.
I would say no...it would take the blazes of hell to burn a hole in a steel ship hull.
Flt damage seems to happen from the actual hole of the weapon. Ships continue to take damage as they try and reach port from leaks breaking back open and what not.
Personaly I think ships in UV take way too much damage.
I have never seen a ship take 2 or 3 bombs and never be able to re cover.
Historicaly ships were damaged or suck quite often from just a few hits.
In UV you have to really hit the damn things hard to sink them.
It also sucks that there isnt some sort of catastrophic explosion.
When it says ammo or fuel has been hit it doesnt appear that anymore damage was actualy caused.

You will love the first time a BB goes down with a super-critical hit in 1 shot! [:D]

If FLT reaches 100%, the ship sinks.

Yes, FIRE levels can increase both SYS and FLT damage

SYS does not sink ships....its maximum value is 99% which is essentially a wrecked ship. If it's a capital ship it will be out of service for a very long time

Now a question that will see if the programers are a good as I hope they are (they probably are btw). When it says fuel or ammo critical hit, does that affect anything other than damage ? A fuel hit = little to no fuel left ? Ammo hit = little to no ammo left ?

Wouldn't an ammo hit= Really big explosion a la Hood?
Wouldn't a fuel hit = Really big fire?[:D]

I saw US CV that with over 90 sys damage and flooding managed to escape my 4 subs, traveled around 10 hexes and reached safely Noumea. And all this with speed 0. That is what they call US damage controll. I should hire one of these repair guys to fix my car [;)].

ONE QUESTION. Are the chances of a "Critical Hit" increased for ships NOT designed
to be the recipiants of hostile action? Merchant shipping seems to take an extrordinary
amount of punishment in this game, but without being any more vulnerable to a
catastrophic occurance. These were ships designed to haul the maximum amount
of cargo, not to take punishment.

It's interesting you ask this Mike as it brings to mind a problem in UV WAAAAYYYY back in I think the 2.0 days of the game... There was a tendency in ship-ship battles for say an AP to get hit 100 plus times and then finally sink. It "sort of" still goes on in ver 2.3 of UV, but to a much lesser degree. Will be interesting to see how WiTP tackles this...

Okay Frag, so now you have me thinking there IS a "flash-bang" kinda kill in this game. Though I'm assuming rare... My question to this is, does it have a graphic to go with it? In terms of battles (ref HMS Hood vs Bismark), seeing just a pyre of smoke in the water instead of the old sinking graphic would rock! After the explosion of course. Heh! [:D]
