was in San Diego the last week of May, missed getting on the Midway as it wasn't going to open for another week. Darn shame, I'll probably never get back there.

others:
U505
Arizona memorial
Alabama and the SS with her
Yorktown and the ships at the museum there (Laffey et al)

here is the Midway in San Diego just before she opened to the public.

any of the new san antonios outside ur windows?

Naw Philly's pretty much a junk yard now, It's a ghost of what it used to be as far as a Navy Yard. But still a lot of history there. About 30 ships different kinds, 1/4 REPO's

What three piper? Are you saying a Flush Decker is still in existence?!!!!

Yea flush deck, althrough I wouldn't really say still in existence, she's floating but she's all cut to hell, could never find out what they where doing with her, those NAVSEA guys think thier engineering sh_t doesn't stink.

Damn! This kind of crap is depressing. Memorialize many insignificant duplicate ships of a class but a ship like this is not. Peeves me off. Like Cabot/Dedalo and Hoga. Any chance you can use your luch hour and find out what her identity is? I'm finding it hard to believe that a four stacker is still around and have not heard of it. The "Flush Deck Sailors" should hear about this if it is a 4 Piper.

Thanks alot. Real old CA? Hmmm, wonder which one. I'd love to find a site which has old mothball photos. Philly NY had some of the most interesting ships laid up there in the fifties.

I never blame myself when I'm not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn't my fault that I'm not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?

I was pretty good at keeping my boys in food and drink...bit of a serious scrounger. I had more beer and steaks for my men in the field than most civvies had at BBQs (keggers not included[:D]).

When I toured the CPF HMCS St John's (went out drinking with some officers from St John's and SS Okanagan the night before and secured the tour by drinking the squids under the table!) the guys said I should have been in the Navy as I knew almost as much as them regarding their own ship.

Yes USS MIDWAY is now a museum, here is the official site:

San Diego Aircraft Museum

I've not had a chance to go onboard yet but did have my picture taken in front of her back in January soon after her arrival/return to our fair city. I'm the biggest guy in the pic.

Also I served in US Navy for 20 years and have been on more ships than I can remember. But as far as WW2 era vessels, here are some that come to memory:

USS IOWA BB61 and USS PIEDMONT AD17 (both of these ships were present in Tokyo Bay for Japanese Surrender)
USS VULCAN AR5
USS JASON AR8
USS YOSEMITE AD19
U-505

I'll compliment that stern photo with one from the bow; this angle only available by boat. I hope I used the correct form of compliment/complement. I'd hate to mess that up in a naval related forum. Photo May 28th.

Sorry to clutter the board with a crappy picture but I wanted to share this one. Upon arrival at my hotel room in San Diego I found this view out of my window. It shows the John C Stennis, the Nimitz, and the Midway in one shot. Two days later the Stennis left on deployment and had I known she was leaving I would have gotten up early to watch. The Nimitz has a condom-like thing over her island electronics which I was told was to isolate the area for cleaning.

I highly recommend a harbor tour to anyone who visits San Diego. I got within a few hundred yards of the Nimitz and many other ships and by chance passed within an easy 9 iron of the USS Pearl Harbor as she was returning to port that day.

If you are headed to Galveston, TX don't miss the air museum on west side of the island. I was flat out stunned at the quality of this place. A very wide assortment of WWII aircraft and all exquistly maintained. Both Army Air Corp and Naval. They even have an F8F there.

I am going to San Diego over the 4th of July to visit my daughter who is stationed on North Island (what rough duty) and plan on visiting the Midway then.

Ships I have served on:
USS Waddell (DDG)
USS Bradly (a very old FFG)
USS Pledge (MSO)
USS Peoria (LST)
And a Knox class whose I don't remember either ( two weeks reserve duty).
I also spent some time, a couple of days in port for training, on the Enterprise CVN-65. Please forgive the superlatives but that is one big ass ship!!!

I have also had the pleasure of visiting a couple of Austrailian and Canadian destroyers whose names I don't remember [&:]
Yes, it is a dry heat... but so is a bloody blast furnace!
