Anyone still getting CTD's with 2.3?

Post by 2Stepper »

Greetings. Been playing UV since it's inception and have a pretty good game going single player and had a real shocker today... Made the mistake of not saving upwards of 3 game weeks of play and suddenly BOOM! Crash to desktop. [X(][X(]

I was stunned... Anyone else have this happen on occasion? The real stinker of the lot is that I'd just taken Shortland Is. from the AI. [:(] At any rate, just curious.

Every two or three turns I get a CTD.

It's ultimately frustrating.

Never had it happen and I have had the game since 1.0.

Must be some sort of compability problem with your specific hardware.

First guess, one would think so. However I've had UV running on my new system for months now with no issues. In fact that was the first CTD I've had with any game program since building the new system.... Here's the specs just for FYI... The system as you can see rarely breaks a sweat.

AMD Athlon 64/3000
1GB RAM
128MB NVIDEA 5200fx video
52x CD ROM
SB Audigy 2
Windows XP

Its possible just thinking about it that it might have been the CD spinning up or down that crashed it... That did happen on occasion in Win ME, but I've never had problems with anything on XP. XP and games of nearly every kind get along wonderfully with XP.

Hopefully it's an anomaly... was just the shock of my first desktop crash in like 6 months. LOL! We shall see...

The game has frozen on me a couple of time, but no CTDs recently. The main problem I have is that after I play the game I have to restart the PC to restore it to full functionality.

Regards to your save game - pity, but there always is the autosave.

I typically have to restart UV after having it open and minimised for about 3 weeks or so. Yeah - I alt-tab out and do other stuff and then come back to it, including loading up and playing other games.

First thing to go is the sort order in the information screens. That's my cue do a quick save and to go and get the CD back off the shelf and restart the game.
I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

Do any of your other games go through a CTD ? On my old rig (Win98), many games would play fine for hours but then lock up. I always attributed it to my system.

Nope. Not once. I did find out what the problem stems from though by going into this in another forum. There's apparently a database problem within UV that can cause problems within games. It deals with too many pilots being assigned to squadrons. For me, I had 70 plus available pilots in my Catalina units. From what I understand that sets you up for a fail at some point.

Either way, it substantiates the point that the error was minor. Just gonna wait now on the bit boy WiTP to see how that one handles things.

Thanks for all the thoughts gents.[8D]

I had plenty of crashes with many games with the old Windows 98 but have not had much in the way of problems with XP. It has faults but is much more stable than win 98 ever was. Lately I have had a few crashes with another game. (Medieval Total War) but the computer is telling me that it is a conflict with a device driver. Perhaps the latest NVIDA drivers-who knows?. Have you installed any new drivers lately?

Almost forgot. There has been an flood of spyware and malware hitting computers in the past few months. This aspect of computer hijacking is rapidly overtaking virus infections as the prime problem with the internet. Many of these programs, once in your machine, are well hidden and damn near impossible for the layman to get rid of. A lot of these spyware programs are poorly written and will cause massive slowdowns and crashes to your computer. If you are having CTDs it may also be a spyware problem.

Be forewarned, one of the most common way to get infected with spyware is to replace the .exe files in your games with cracks that allow you to run the game without the disk. The web sites where you find these cracks are notorious for malware infections. Do so at your own risk.

If you suspect you have spyware on your machine there are a lot of free utiltites out there that can help. Look for "Spybot Search and Distroy", "Adaware" and "CD Shredder" in Google, as well as "Pop up stopper". Norton Internet Security is great but cost about $100. Don't forget a firewall as well.

Yep, I'm updated across the board and have Spysweeper from Webroot to kill spyware... So far the CTD I had has been a lone incident.
