Beta version being demo'd at Origins

Post by Arjuna »

Hi all,

Paul and I have been deoming a beta version of COTA at Origins. We ,ve been showing off some of the scenarios from Greece, including the Vevi Pass, Mt Olympus battles plus the battles from Crete. So far receiving great comments from those attending. If you're in or near Columbus, Ohio, USA then drop in to the Convention centre and look us up at the Matrix stand booth 1106. Just look for the big posters on the wall. You can't misss us. Paul and I will be more than willing to run through the new features and answer any of your questions. See you there.

Here you can see that the Recon Bn and 1st Bn LAH have secured Veve ( their first objective ) but are under fire from Australian and British troops. The ANZACs and Brits are launching a counter attack to retake Veve. They must try and hold the pass for as long as they can to facilitate the safe withdrawal of Greek forces on the flanks.

The Germans on the other hand must attempt to force the passes and drive south as fast as possible and exit from the southern map edge. Note the Exit task highlighted in the south.

Do I see a brigade supply unit in the first shot?

If so, assaulting?

Those maps are huge.
Are these going to be bigger than anything we saw in HTTR?
I dont know your zoom level but that map looks to be quite a bit bigger than anything I have seen before.

It's moving rather than assaulting (the Assault task arrow is thicker) and as it's an intel report, it is not necessarily accurate for either unit type, strength, or location. In this case I am pretty sure it's wildly inaccurate - troops under fire and tired can make those mistakes [:)]!

Yep, they are huge. I think the biggest is over 50x30km. Whether they all make it through or need to be trimmed down remains to be seen depending on performance on lower-spec machines.

Yeah, I noticed I was wrong on all accounts just after submitting the post. At first I thought it was a first glimps of the new supply system, then I realised it was just a plain ol' base unit.

Apart from the big maps what else are we seeing?

Eeeuh, lets see..day 2 6:09, last day you see the allied player thinking "I still have it all under control". You have about 24 hours left before you going to get smacked by a lot of people dressed in grey [;)]

Besides that a new "E" command on the the UI and an additional bar at the bottom of the screen [:)]

"E" command? Urm: Party this way, and that's an order? No really? Envelope? The much requested "pursue and destroy unit" command (but begining with "E" [&:])?

I thought the "additional bar at the bottom of the screen" was just a development aid like the "comments?" button which was seen in the beta shots of HttR, I believe.

A few things that aren't obvious:

Extra elevation layers to allow us to model the incredibly rugged Greek and Cretan terrain;
New, detailed estabs to cover (so far) Greek, Australian, New Zealand, British, Wehrmacht, and SS forces from the campaign;
A full force list of over 1600 units covering the campaigns, with more to come (since Malta hasn't been done yet); and
Map data changed to reflect the harsh Greek terrain.

Some things that are visible in the screenshots but may not be self-explanatory:

New UI elements including the command bar at the bottom of the screen, which so far includes a quick-access game menu, the intel filter cycle button, and a cycle button to turn command lines on and off (more will of course be added to this bar);
The new Exit task, visible at the bottom centre of the last screenshot, where you are required to exit troops off the map to gain the points, and the corresponding "Exit" command button, to the left of the "Reattach" command button; and
Revised map graphics, which are of course a work still in progress.

That's just so far, of course [:)]

Ignore performance, just include a recommened spec per Scenario (and do a deal with Intel, Dell, M$......[;)]).

IIRC doesn't Talonsoft's "The Operational Art of War" have a different exe for larger scenarios? As I've said before, I upgraded form .5 to 1MB (@ £150) of Amiga RAM to play Panther Games' Fire Brigade - was that really 16 years ago! (and I think the game was £30, even then: oops, sorry, wrong forum, wrong thread [:D])

Since we're in the wrong forum....
I've just about finished a detailed TOAW scenario on Crete (the whole map).
Company units, individual ships, options for bringing in the Italian navy etc.
If anyone's interested in a copy, send an email to:
erik.nygaard@nrk.no

...and I played Fire Brigade on the Amiga too [;)]
