Is it possible to go from Email play to online play?

Post by madhatter »

Hi! I am a relative newcomer to SPWAW and a friend and I are just getting into it and started an email game because we both work everyday. I have a question, though. We'd like to be able to switch to online play for a few turns when we're both around for a a couple hours (like, on Saturday for instance) and it takes longer to do e-mail turns (review, play, zip, attach, send, notify of send... wait for turn again).

I've been able to load the email games into an online play setting, but I can't then save and switch back to email. Is this possible? I tried renaming the email files into the SAVE folder, but they won't load properly (like email006 to save012). Has anyone switched back and forth or tell me if it's possible in any way?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Because of the security feature in the PBEM system, once started as a PBEM, it must be finished as one. And it has to be finished on the same computer...so you can't copy the files and take them to work to play on your lunchbreak.[:-]

What if you started a PBEM without a password?
Would those be able to be played online?

Not true in I understand this right... I am playing a 4 player (actually 3 player now, one guy had to leave) PBEM game right now. after my "team mate" is done moving his units he "saves" the turn and send it to me. I then move my units and then end the turn and send it to our opponents. They both makes their moves and then send it back to my teammate. It works GREAT!

As for the PBEM-internet-PBEM... I tried that too and also had problems. I could go from PBEM to internet, but could not go back to PBEM. I tried it quite a while ago when I was REALLY new, so I had no idea what I ws doing. One thing you might try is setting up a PBEM game without any security/password.

Are you using password protection? I was under the impression that once a password was set, that battle couldn't be transferred to another computer and played.

Yes it can be emailed to your teammate. The person that set up the game would have to send the password so the second player could get into the battle.

Thanks for the info. I actually tried to access my pbem game from a work computer (looking nervously over shoulder with fingers on alt-tab), but I had a security violation come up when I tried to access even with my own password. Are you saying, though, if I understand you correctly, that I could get in with the host's (I didn't set up the game) password?

Yes you will get a security violation. If you say continuew it will take you to the password screen. If you know the password it will let you in the battle. I did not set the game up initially. We started this with 4 people. It ws a custom made scenario by M4Jess. The first guy PLayer 1 (Player 1 and 2 are a team) started the game, set his password, and moved his units. He then "saved the game" not ended his turn, and sent it to player 2. Player 2 got the security violation, continued, and then entered player 1s password, moved his units and then ENDED the turn. He then emailed it the player 3. Player 3 followed the same thing as player 1 IE not ending the turn but only saving it and sending it to me. I then moved the final units ended the turn and sent it to player 1. We all get the security violation.
