Fair Bids

Another question I'm curious about. What do you THINK is a fair bid. Or at least for your favourite nation?

By bid I mean standard bidding where, one bids for a nation to play, the highest bidder gets to play that nation, but ends up subtracting the bid in victory points at the start of the game. Hence, you'll have to work harder to meet you're quota

If the different rule-sets make a major impact on the bidding, feel free to explain why.

When playing with Economic Manipulation (as I always have), usually we would make the max bid a 40, so if you wanted to play France, usually a 40 bid was the norm. If two people bid the same, roll a dice and the winner gets it.

I usually don't bid for a country, but rather bid for a country at a particular bid (one I think I can actually win with). Some people just bid really high for a particular country, knowing that the game won't end so it doesn't even really matter, which I think is stupid and I don't like playing with people like that.

France: 36-38
GB: 33-37 (I really like playing GB, so I bid a little higher for them than I normally think I would)
Russia: 21-24
Austria: 15-19
Prussia: 8-10 (Don't really like playing Prussia all that much)
Spain: 1 (Can't stand playing Spain)
Turkey: 2

I don't blame you, certainly does not seem to balance things right that way. And if someone has no intention to finish, kind of ruins the a lot of the fun, at least for me.

It seems most people still tend to prefer France. IMHO I would bid higher for Britain assuming the rule for stalemate still goes to Britain as the winner. Though, I imagine it also would depend on the playing style of your opponents. If there is a tendancy in that group to always be very agressive towards to British player first, e.g. trying to knock her out to eliminate her easy victory win, then I would be very cautious

When I was a kid (High School), I always bid for France. I now prefer Austria because of my miniature Austrian Army. Right now it stands at 200 inf, 50 gd, 50 cav, and 4 guns. I like the white uniforms with different color facings. (1 inf regiment is actually Hungarian) I still have about 600 inf and 50 cav in boxes waiting to be painted.

I don't bid more than 25 points for a major power. A like to play France, Austria or GB. I bid 25 points for one of those powers then i bid 1 to 6 points for the others ! [:D]

Prussia can be very hard to play without a trustworthy friend in France, but can be bought for a cheap bid. Prussia was always my first choice, even if I took a beating from France early, because of the great corp structure, decent leadership later and a small border. (I also found that she has the easiest requirements to become a dominant power.shhh)

Prussia is the only other power with dominant corp values printed on the corp units. Could this be a coincidence???

Well, these values are there because in the rules, the tactical value of the Prussian corps commander goes up from 1 to 2. I think that it happens in 1813, but I'm not sure.
