Should I scrap the Yamato on turn one?

Post by Og »

The thing eats gas and is worth lots of victory points to the allies once they catch if from the air and sink it. I would rather have the gas for subs and DEs. Do I get the metal off the thing if I scrap it, how long does it take?

What other big clunkers should I scap?

Umm...Yamato is a matter of prestige and proud, and if you manage to engage it in a naval batlle it would be great even if the DDs were more usefull.

Yamato wasnt usefull because it the IJN was too afraid to use it. In the game more agressive players who keep it away from air units should be able to use it to some great succes.
My philosophy has always been, if it destroys more VP than its worth, then it has done its job.

Also the way the IJN navy used their BBs limited their usefulness.
They could have been used to protect CVs, support anphibious landings (Yes I know, early on, there was no need, later on no possibility)
I wouldn't scrap it, for a prestige and historical reason. There is NO way Japan would have scrapped Yamato.
If my Japanese oponent wants to do that, that's OK with me though.[8|]

Why on earth would you scrap it? It makes great holes in ships!

Quit worrying about them rebel USN types ... they live in fear of you! [:D]

Hey Og,

I wouldn't scrap it even if it is a torpedo magnet. It's like what Hammer said a presitigiuos element of the IJN. Would the Germans have scrapped Bismark or Tirpitz? Never in a million years, too much national pride in those babies.

Exactly. The Tirpitz, sitting in a fjord in Norway effectively inmobilized a significant number of British capital ships that had to guard against it breaking out.
Use the Yamato wisely, and it will pose a headache for the allies.[X(]

Judging by the fact that I can't KILL Yamato or Musashi head to head with USN BB's and CA's in a stand up fight.. I would keep it!!!

The ONLY way I have ever SANK either of these ships was with air.. and lots of it. I can beat them to a bloody pulp with 14 and 16" guns.. but they always manage to get home while I end up with 4 or 5 BB's damaged beyond short term repair for my effort.

at least this was true in UV, and I doubt it has changed much

I already have plans for Yamato and its nice 18" guns... Something I'm sure the Allies will not like [:D] As for her sister ship thats a different story.. not sure when its supposed to be built, but it might get halted - it eats a lot of Ship points.

I would think that those two super BB's are the only ones that can stand up to the modern US BB's so you need them. The Shinano was such as waste of metal, they could at least made it into a Midway-style supercarrier instead of a giant a/c transport?! Between her and the BB conversions, there was some serious screwups in the IJN high command about the realities of carrier warfare IMHO. Would make an interesting scenario to create, optional Japanese carrier construction.

I would not scrap her. Can you imagine her as a Rear area Commerce raider? Or use her for long range rear area bombardments. You already know that to sink her it is going to take a lucky shot or the dedication of an awful lot of assets. The Lucky shot, well you pay your money you takes your chances, but if she breaks into the backfield and starts hammering transports, or mid-range basses, you could get lots of help. If the enemy leaves it alone, you get to run around hammering convoys, and such. If he decides to chase her away or really sink her, you have somewhere that is going to be thin. Use her strategically and not think tactically.
