Fighter AI in Planetary Missions

Post by Incendiary Lemon »

Occured in the 3.9 demonstration version as well.

The strike aircraft have a nasty habit of diving into the ground. On a bomber mission in operation highland, I ordered my wingmen to engage the hostile targets within the city (reactor, factories.) All three collided with the ground.

Also on a sweep mission.

After cleaning up the mission sector of enemy fighters I put the ship on auto nav. At the fourth waypoint it did not break orbit rather it rolled, fell into a pronounced dive, and broke up shortly thereafter on the planet surface. In bombing runs - After entering orbit my element is invariably enaged in similiar plunging dives towards the surface. That in lue of forming up with me. Is this their standby pattern?

Hit Alt-F if you want your ships to enter formation. Otherwise they'll follow their preplanned navroute. The navpoints may not be placed properly or they may not give craft enough leeway to avoid cratering, especially entering an atmosphere and diving down towards the first navpoint with attack craft.

Haven't had them hit the ground yet, though I make liberal use of the auto button and send the group home after they fire off all their missiles.

I did see them trying to dive bomb a SAM site, they were getting pretty close to the ground - looked like a flock of birds swooping around :)
Seems like they forgot to fire their cannons though, as the site just sat their thinking about shooting missiles as all these bombers flew around it.
