Eyestrain!

I don't know if any other 50 + year old gamers are having this problem, but at 1024 x 768 resolution the text messages etc are virtually unreadable on my 17" CRT monitor!

Thinking that I may have to break down and spring for a new monitor, can anyone recommend the optimal monitor size and type for this game?

19'' are very reasonable these days.

Sony and Viewsonic make the best displays.
Panasonic also makes a good screen.

This is the one I bought and I'm very pleased with it. $169 delivered from NewEgg although I got mine for $125 after rebate at Best Buy. Keep an eye in the Sunday paper and you may see a steal. Best to go to the store and check em first I say, though the one in the link here is good. LOL my previous 17" was a Mag too.

One note. A LCD panel does not do different resolutions that well. They work best at their full res. CRT displays use different way of doing things and look fine at different resolutions.

I'm running a couple of Sony CPD-420's here and I work in front of them 12+ hours a day without eye strain.

Spring for a 19", you'll be happy you did. The price difference is pretty small these days.

NEC is who I was trying to think of.
All 4 make good moniters.
My 19'' viewsonic CRT has been going strong for almost 7 years.

I'm using a 17" ViewSonic right now, it's been going for 4. Very nice, I agree. [:)]

One note. A LCD panel does not do different resolutions that well. They work best at their full res. CRT displays use different way of doing things and look fine at different resolutions.

I notice this as well with my Hyundai Q17 TFT. This IMHO is the biggest drawback of TFT displays, they dont scale well and should really be run in their native resolution. 1280x1024 is pretty common in games these day (which is the native res of a 17" TFT), but when it scales down to say 1024x768, it looses picture quality. Not to a massive extent (although not sure on the cheaper brands), but there is a noticable effect (slightly blurry, not as sharp or crisp etc).
I still would not buy a CRT in place of my TFT though, even though opinions are mixed when it comes to gaming.

Surprisingly, the game is crystal clear on my 15" Compaq laptop and a little fuzzy on my 17" ViewSonic desktop monitor. Adjusting the brightness and contrast seemed to help some though.

I run it on a 21" Dell (Not sure of the original make)

it is crystal clear and wonderful.

As matrix stated it was programmed on a 21" so the size will shrink a bit on smaller screens.

I use a 15 inch thin line monitor and have no problems and I dont even wear my glasses.....Im 34 so maybe my eyes arent as bad yet.

Very dependant on the brand.

You need to understand that 1280x1024 is NOT a proper aspect ratio which is generally why it does not look good.

The proper aspect would be 1280 x 960 or 1600 x 1200 ... the 1280 x 1024 actually stretch the image resulting in this blurring of text.

I have some sort of professional graphics series 19in. Viewsonic at home, and while I don't know that much about monitors in general, one thing that's good about it is that it has a toggle for reading and one for gaming. The gaming one is brighter and generally more colorful, while reading one is dimmer and does make reading easier for small print. That's of course besides the many variations that can be made all through the monitor such as setting the horizontal/vertical/color.
