Marine Captive Reported Killed

Post by KG Erwin »

One of the Islamic extremist groups in Iraq reported that Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun was beheaded, and that a video would soon be released. I have recently seen a letter from another Marine that is circulating on the web, warning of severe retribution by the USMC , and this is bad news for both the terrorists and the Marines who are currently being redeployed to the region. This has a personal bearing, as one of my co-workers' sons is going back to Iraq for a second deployment with the 2nd Marines.

If this report is indeed true, then the sh*t has hit the fan. The Marines will extract justice, one way or another.

I only ask for you guys to offer a prayer for Jason Gillespie, 1st Bn/2nd Marines. He came back from his first tour unwounded, and let's hope he comes back from his second tour unharmed.

I request that you guys refrain from any political diatribes. Otherwise, this thread will be locked.

Here is the report, as broadcast by MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5310187/

History has taught the world one thing and that is don't f**k with the Marines. I have a question. Why was my post locked up because it contained something was not meant to be here and this one was not or has yet to be? Where is the proper forum to post such things?

Sadly, I thought this was more or less unavoidable from the minute he was taken. My sympathies go to his family and let us hope something worthwhile comes from his sacrifice.

Seems to be a lot of uncertainty about this one. Now they say they didn't kill him. [&:]

One has to be careful what one reads into these statements. Having just read it myself I noted that what the statement denies is that Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun was beheaded. It does not state that he is still alive. Thats an important distinction, if he was still alive why would they not merely have said 'He's still alive.'

What does that mean? So the US Marines will act in theyr own way, even against theyr autorithy ("the state", for example)? Sounds a little bit strange.

Unfortunately, the reality is that nobody is ever likely to find the person who did it, let alone the person who ordered it done and so what will happen is that the violence will just escalate with more innocent Iraqi's dying which in turn will add fuel to the anti-american feeling and so the terrorists end up in a win/win situation either way.

Sad but true.

The situation with Cpl Hassoun has taken a strange turn. Reports are now circulating that the Corporal is very much alive, and will be freed. I can only hope for his family's sake that this is true, but his whereabouts are still unknown.

So do I. But common sense suggests otherwise. I suspect that the terrorists have interpreted the high level of media and personal interest in Cpl Hassoun's plight as a sign of weakness/opportunity. After all if the entire USMC are on the edge of their seats waiting to know if he's dead the longer they delay that information the more the tension builds and the more pressure the US government come under to do something. Its like a kidnapper who kills his victim within minutes of seizing her becuase he doesn't want the hassle but still contacts the family in the hope of extorting money.

They can keep the USMC and the US government dancing on the head of pin for years tryng to determine whether this man is dead or still being held. They can negotiate concessions based upon the hope of his release. They can let the USMC beat their own government up because they aren't doing enough to get him back. And my guess is they will finally announce the news he's dead at the most sensitive and opportune time for them when it will do the maximum damage to US/Iraqi relations and when every US Marine is so wound up by the stress of waiting they'll be prepared to go out an kill anyone just to get their own back.

There are hostages taken by the IRA in Ireland whose fate is still unannounced by those that kidnapped them. Their families don't know who took them, why they took them or what their fate was and the IRA are still not prepared to release this information despite all the concessions the UK government has given them. In fact the IRA are currently trying to negotiate further concessions in return for admitting that some of these people were murdered and what they did with the bodies.

Maximum Impact/Maximum Payback.

OK, so he was beheaded. And then not beheaded. Then he was freed. And then not freed. Then he was with his family in Libanon. Then he was with his family in Libanon, but the first time he was there he really wasn't...

And now he's at the US Embassy in Beirut.

What have we learned today, class?

That's right, ALWAYS question the news. They're eager to jump to conclusions and have everyone tag along. Cry "Wolf!", anyone?

Lol: This has gone into the realms of the bizarre now.

I must admit that I'm a bit confused as to how a man with from Lebanon managed to enlist in the US Marines, Presumably, he is a US citisen?
