A lot of times the TF has reached its destination and automatically turns retirement on which sends it back home. I find this happening a lot of times with non-combat TFs... Also if a Combat TF gets low on fuel or ammo it will turn around to resupply - just like subs do when out of torps.

I have seen this once or twice, usually after a TF splits off a damaged ship into a new TF the damaged unit wants to return to the old Home Port.

Make sure nothing is computer controlled that would affect them. Check "Retirment Allowed". TF's that get a low on fuel and such will automtically turn back home, whether they's reached their DH or not. I've gotten used to setting every TF to no retirement allowed (Patrol) all the time to keep this from happenning. Nothing would tick me off more to have 400,000 AK TF 2/3rds the way to OZ fromt he West coast, turn back because it thought it was low on something or thought it saw a carrier too close by or some such crap....

In Scen 15 on 8 Dec, I had CV TF sent to Wake and it showed so on TF screen, but highlighted hexs showed returning to PH.
Common Sense is an uncommon virtue.
If you think you have everything under control, you don't fully understand the situation.
