PBM: Same Combat Save, different action

Post by mc3744 »

I went through the titles of the other posts and couldn't find anything similar.

I'm playing two PBEM games, one campaign and one scenario.
We noticed that the Allies see different combat actions than the IJN.
Example: in the combat save 2, I (as Allies) saw an ASW vs. sub battle without hits or casualties. I also saw the English torpepo planes (can't spell it [:D]) putting one in the Haruna.
The IJN has no Haruna damage, neither saw the action in the combat that HE sent us. Plus he saw one more ASW vs. sub action were one Allied DD is sunk and the sub too. This info is reflected by the intelligence report, but not by the combat report.

In the scenario I (as IJN) saw my Nell torpedoing the Lexington and he (the Allies) one of his subs torpedoing my ML.
He didn't see his CV hit and I didn't see the ML hit. But when we check on the ships in the turn file, they are actually damaged.

I like the FOW, but it seems a bit too much to me. We are missing the fun of the action.
One thing is not knowing the exact amount of planes shot down, troops lost, sys damage. A different one not knowing if one of your ship has been successfully attacked. Looks like a bug to me.
Am I the only one with this idea?

We all have the game patched.

I personally haven't seen this in WitP (but haven't started a PBEM game either). However, I think this is left over from UV. Knavey and I found the exact same situation (and worked with one of the Devs by sending savegames), where the combat replay shows vastly different results than the actuals (or even the combat.txt, which should at least match), and indeed if you played the thing, you got a slightly different replay each time you ran the replay.

As I recall, the issue has something to do with the "seed" that the replay is using, and it gets borked when you have two games running, and trying to execute it on two separate machines (which sounds exactly what you're describing since you're also doing PBEM). I know that they made headway, and we didn't see the issue after the last patch, but there may be an issue with WitP.

Save your game(s) before and after each turn. Save each execution of the the Combat Replay file, and the corresponding .txt file; do this for both games, and get your PBEM partner to do the same. Basically, you're getting a before and after shot of EVERYTHING so the Devs have something to look at.

Punt for you, and good luck!

Hi,

Please also be sure to exit the game completely after each PBEM turn, then re-enter and make sure all options are correct before loading the next save. Thanks.

I do - consistantly. Yet my opponent askes me to send him my combat report (I am Japan) so he can see what all happened because he said he missed some things in his combat report and replay.

As long as the Japanese player sends the text file it should be ok, since that one is 100% right (minus fog of war). It means the allied player won't be able to see accurate animations but many people turn those off completely anyway. In PacWar the Japanese player never saw the actions -- just the report afterwards.
I don't like the idea of exiting the game each time I do a turn. I like to have several games going at once so when I finish one turn and send it off there is another one ready for me to run.

Currently due to the options being unlocked, the Allied player can effectively change what is seen during the combat replay. This is fixed in the patch.

In the mean time: YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE EVERY OPTION SET THE SAME

Even one option off will change the random number generator by 1 pull and every result past that will be shifted.
