A new kind of operational loss for me....

Post by Grotius »

I'd never crated up planes before, so I was quite excited about putting 45 big bad B-17s in boxes and shipping 'em from San Francisco to Noumea. Of course, it didn't occur to me to give my Transport TF an escort. In fact, somewhere along the way, I split off the AK so that it was all by its lonesome. The IJN hadn't shown off many subs yet, so I guess I got a little lazy.

Weeks later, four hexes east of Noumea, a submarine attacks the transport. Massive FLT damage. My DDs and ASW planes from Noumea race to the rescue. A day later, the ship sinks, and apparently DDs and other transports don't rescue sinking crates, because I got the following figure for operational losses. <sigh>

Maybe Zoomie can reprogram you to not send ships without proper protection [:D]

Hehe, at this point, I'd say my Organic Intelligence has made more mistakes than the Artificial Intelligence. Not only did I send 45 crated B-17s to their death; I also ordered 8 AKs to sail from Anchorage to Seattle and back to Anchorage without picking up a single crate of supply. A shakedown cruise for AKs!

Also, even if my B-17s had made it to Noumea, it hadn't occurred to me to bring any base forces along so that I could, you know, actually USE the bombers. [8|]

It's funny isn't it ... I bet a lot of folks have made these mistakes yet are not admitting it [:D]

My worst was unloading 700,000 supply at a base forgetting the base was still 1 notch under the safe from spoilage and lost most of the supply [:D]

All the way from SF for nothing. [8|]

That's one for the "Things not to do Thread". Sorry to hear of you loss. I'm sure those planes would have done glorious things against the Nip's.

ROFL! I'm extraordinarily paranoid about what happens to and where I'm sending my big convoys. 100 7k AK's?! LOL

I cut my teeth on UV so most of the newbie mistakes were made in that game, but I can say I had a loaded convoy of AK's out of SF sailing back and forth to nowhere below Fiji. I sent it to Oz and then recalled it 9 TIMES because I forgot it had already been loaded.[:D]

I'm glad you mentioned this, because I was just contemplating sending a huge Transport TF like that to the South Pacific. I think I still have this UV mindset that Noumea is this enormous base with huge stockpiles and tons of ASW around. Um, not yet. I've still got to build the thing! Or at least check to see that port+air adds up to at least 10...

Is it adds up to 10, or is OVER 10? I swear I've seen it listed both ways.. Mr. Frag? Anyone?

Did exactly the same as you but with Liberators going to Oz.. sank 2 hexes shy of Brisbane !! and i did have 1 (yes one) whole escort DD. also going to add some empty AK's to furter A/c loaded groups as dummy targets. All planes on one ship is scary

P.s would the pilots get rescued ?

And thx for the oversiupply tip Mr Frag .. I missed that one in the manual [:)]

The alternative option would be having to have an AP carry 30 odd pilots *with* the AK carrying the planes. You think logistics are tough now?

If I had my way, people would be begging to play Japan because it is so much simpler the the Yanks [:'(]

good idea ! .. but how about introducing the pilot transport ship. It would be some kind of luxury yaucht that would get the crews to thier destination well fed and rested [:D]

Also a Saki refinery for bases where the japs want to have kamikaze groups

or breweries as a pre requisite for renaming a base as Australian

Also curry houses for the brits

for the duch however ?? porn shops or maruajana plantations [:D][:D]

End rambling thoughts for the day

Hmm, Dutch eh? You mean brothels at each port ... instantly boost moral to 100% but troops gradually become sick if left there due to some social issues [X(]

Why for high ranking officers only ? They were for all soldiers. Or at least they were brothels (maybe separated) for all ranks.

Sexual needs are a part of military logistics that are widely ignored by most books and also wargames (and I agree on the last part) but were not ignored by military commands at the time. Military brothels were following at least the Italian, German, Japanese (comfort women) and French armies in WWII, and probably others I don't know. As far as I know, the American don't have any and so turn some of the countries they spend a lot of time in in giant brothels (WWII Southern Italy and 60's Vietnam coming to mind).

I met a guy that was writing a story of French military brothels some years ago, but had few hopes he will be allowed to publish it (as he was in the military). To say it shortly, they were created when colonial troops were sent to metropolitan France, so no-white soldiers will not fraternize with the local girls. The logistic problems increased when the Army tried (with success) to provide the soldiers with women from the same ethnicity, creating Tunisian, Algerian, Morrocan and so on brothels.

Now I think about it your totally correct, I just like ribbing the italians [:)]

Never really thought about this topic before, but logically ancient, medieval upto almost present day armies had camp followers.. ( as opposed to being stalked by dale winton )

Thanks for enlightening me, I am worried that the subject is so Taboo that the poor guys book won't get published ! maybe it constitutes a terrorist threat.. syphillis (?) as a bio weapon [:D]
