Battle Fatigue

Not my units, but myself. ;)

I just finished the SOPAC scenario that runs from Mar-Feb of 42-43. This was a very intense gaming experience, in large part because I played 360+ turns of a sim that requires a lot of attention.

The scenario was an immense amount of fun at first, as I counter-punched the IJN and fought to hold on (played w/AI on hard). Oddly though, having inflicted ENORMOUS attrition losses on the enemy A/C stocks and gained a lead that was essentially insurmountable, I found myself OVERWHELMED by the level of micromanagment that was required as I went on the offensive in the Solomons. There was a bit of a spoiler towards the end as the IJN holed-up a huge fleet of ships in the Shortland Island harbor. I reduced the harbor and ravaged its contents, but it wasn't a whole lot of fun.

Funny thing is, I can't even remember how long ago it was that I downloaded the darn game, although I know that it was on opening day. Pace yourself a bit folks; WitP will still be here a month from now. I think that you will enjoy it a whole lot more that way. :)

I was thinking the same thing myself. The smaller scenarios are demanding and challenging unto themselves. A good way to learn tho. I'm finding the idea of fighting the whole Karachi to San Diego sized war rather daunting. [X(]

It is a daunting task just keeping track of all your units: Now where did I send the 42nd BG? What is that task force doing?!? And then you have to fight the enemy too! Aaarghh!

Actually, you'll find you get much better at this over time.

When you first start playing, you really don't have any plans, you are just throwing units around because you can. Over time, you'll get past that phase and actually have plans for dealing with areas and you'll know where things are because they are part of plan xyz.

Give it time, you'll be playing for the next 5+ years [;)]

Let's see...given my pokey pace of one turn a day.....1941-1945....yup....five years sounds right. [:D] Hah. Just jesting...I'm already finding that with familarity it's getting easier. [:)]

Well, Thanks for teh insight into the finished game. Congrats btw on getting through it.

I am plannign to start a Grand Campaign tonight. I have printed up maps of the theaters, stocked plenty of pencils and legal pads. I am planning to make up actual TF and Unit orders on teh legal pads. I currently plan to have on legal pad for each theater. I am sure that it will devolve into files for each with smaller notebooks for individual operations. I was just wondering if anyone has completed an OOB for scenario 15.

I plan to run the Campaign on Continuous after Dec. 31, 1941. I will break when I need to but plan to go as far as I can that way. I am sure I will be stopping frequently or changing to daily turns for major operations.

Wish me luck, and buy stock in St. Pauli girl Beer.

this may be a newbe tactic...but what i do is ship everthing to a "regional base" (my terms...no WITP terms). then i ship out from there....that way i just send the South, southwest, southeast stuff to Brisbane and don't really track ind. units till they reach that point. then the air units can just fly......prob used by alot of people but still thought i'd add my 2 cents

I do that too. I keep thinking of Rumsfeld's phrase 'force flow' when I'm playing this game. Seems to apply.

I've also noticed that while there is a lot of micro-management in some cases, there is also a lot of 'fire and forget' type orders especially when shipping units to far off bases. After a while I find I'm better at sensing which area's need my attention and which ones can kind of go on auto pilot for a while.

It also helps that I prefer fewer, larger task forces. They cover less area but require less management (read mistakes) and when I do bump into a surprise, it tends to be the AI that's in trouble, not me. [:D]

Actually that's kind of what was done early in the war.
The supplies and equipment were getting to the west coast, and loaded haphazardly as they arrived in whatever ships were available. Then they were shipped to (I believe) Suva, where they were unloaded, and then Task forces would be "combat loaded" (planes with engines and ammno, that kind of thing) and sent on to wherever they were needed.
So not a newbie thing at all!
