Fonts... yikes they are hard to read!!!

Post by MikeToth »

Hey is it just me or is the text font in the info boxes totally unreadable ??? I know there are other threads about deleting a Windows System Font and replacing it with a new more readable one, but I think you should not have to monkey with your System folders in order to get the fonts changed

(Matrix - can you guys do something for us older types ??)....

Thanks much

Nope, not just you, there are a fair number of complaints, either from us 'occular functionality challenged' people (folks with bad eyesight) or just people who try not to come away from their computers with eyestrain.

Its been mentioned a few times in the patch wish list, so there are quite a few of us that are really hoping they correct it in the first patch. Several of us tend to agree that having to kludge a fix by replacing one of the most used fonts in the XP OS is not the best option.

I don't think the font is bad (its one of my favourite fonts, at 10 or 12 point), if only it was a couple points larger! As others have pointed out however, some nature of san serif font with a larger point size would probably be best. If necessary, they may need to abreviate some of the information in the various windows to keep everything they want included, and not over right anything.

One of the (many) parts of my job is arranging reports so that they contain all the information that is needed on the screen or hardcopy, and yet is readable. That sometimes requires some creativity with font type, size, positioning, spacing, and abreviation, but it is certainly possible. Matrix will probably just have to do the same here. They apparently originally went with 'long winded with really small font', and that wasn't really the best choice.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who sees (or in this case doesn't see) how hard it is to read... I'm running at 1280X1024 on an LCD so they tend to be a tad smaller.

I sure hope with you that they address this in the first patch... I just D/L'd it yesterday and am itching to get into it, but I'm getting bad headaches straining to read the text.

These guys are pretty good so I'm confident that they will address it pronto

Yup, the font is just awful to read - it was fine in UV, but not in WitP with 1024x768 resolution. I'm not going to buy a new 21" monitor, and I don't want to change the fonts in Windows.

So I really hope the Matrix guys recognize this problem, 'cause I don't think it would be very difficult to fix it.

Please? [&o]

Not simply replace one with another, any game should have some choice of fonts, no persons eyes are same as others so 2-3 font choices and a bit leeway on font size would let one customarize to best for each..

My 19" monitor is good - I can read the fonts fine. But it does give me a good reason (as if I needed one) to buy a 22" when the price comes down.

Even on my 21" flat-screen monitor, the game fonts are a tad difficult to read. Enlarging them on a larger monitor is not the solution here.

Search for this thread in this forum. It has a lot of info about what you can do in the meantime:

Can I use some other font in the game?

Well, for things like games (or this BB) serif-fonts (with hooks - like Times or Times New Roman) are not ideal. The better choices are sans-serif fonts (without hooks - sans means "without" in French) like Arial...

Serif fonts are typically used for flowing text - Sans-Serif fonts for placative use like presentations because they are easier to read from a distance.

That's true. I was playing on a projector last night and my screen was about 100" and I still found the fonts ugly (and I got a neck strain from looking up at my wall but that's another issue).
I am confident that they will fix this but it would make me feel a little better if I heard it from someone in the company that they acknowledge that this is a problem.

Ditto, it would be nice if Matrix acknowledged the font issue, at least. I've not heard a peep from them about it, although I know they're busy with higher priority fixes no doubt. How about it, Matrix?[&o]

It is kind of tough for Matrix to ignore especially since the first thread that came out about this problem got the most hits (close to a thousand) over the course of about a week or so.

And changing the font would probably be among the easiest things to do when programming the patch. So many people are complaining that I don't think Matrix can just ignore this problem.
