PBEM save files

Post by Mark VII »

Have recently started #15, I am the Allies(player 2) on a 2-day turn game. My opponent is Ed, we played a UV campaign game for the last six months, so we know how to send turns back and forth.

Problem started on the second sent turn (Dec 8-9). Combat save and the turn arrive with an extra digit in the file name. Instead of 012, the saved turn would arrive attached on email as 0121. The combat save would also arrive with an extra digit...0001. It took me a while to figure out why nothing would play but I finally noticed the extra digits, renamed the files to what they should be and everything was fine. Combat save played and I was able to issue orders for the Allies and send.

Turn three arrives(Dec 10-11) wednesday, same issues and I rename the files and the combat save plays just fine. However the game is wanting the (player 1) password. I assume Ed forgot to end his turn correctly and he sent me his unended turn. Ed never did this during our UV game but mistakes can happen. I email Ed with my thoughts and ask for him to end the turn and resend. Well...turn arrives I rename it and same thing, game wants (player 1) password. I'm sure Ed did it right this time. I even deleted the save file using explorer and pasted over from the email again. Still, same thing wanting (player 1) password.

Just wondering if any one else is having these kinds of issues. I am very perplexed.[&:] [&:] OK, I'm not a computer expert, I have only a basic understanding. This did not happen with UV, an arriving save file (say 12) renaming itself because that file already exsists. I would paste over the newfile and it would ask if I wanted to replace the old file with the new file. Sometimes it would paste the new file straight in and I would have two (save 12) files, well then I would just delete the old (save 12) and everything would be OK.

If it matters, I have a one year old Dell running Windows XP Home edition.

I have a similar PBEM problem. Running the big campaign. historic scenario off, historic replacements.
We are up to 12/14, and now the combat save files refuse to play. There is some combat going on, since my bases are getting lost, and my LCUs are pushed off them, but I can't see anything. It is quite annoying actually. Oh BTW the action report files show no combat.

Check your options on the Options Page and the Realism Page. They have probably gotten zapped.

This is a bug
You can replay the same turn more times and obtain a diferent result anytime
Your opponent can email you the combat report
otherwise you never know what the real combat resolutiom
Is only a allied player problem

This morning after the game asked for player 1 password, I did check all the options and settings and they seemed normal and where we had started.

Mr. Frag; when you say "zapped", what do you mean?

They all go to the off position and the turn length goes to <blank> instead of 1-2-3-C

So, each time I start a turn, I should make sure all of the settings are at what we started the game at? I have checked a couple of times and that does not seem to be an issue with how my game is playing.

Why do you think the file names are being slightly changed as the turns are downloaded? This did not happen with our UV game. Do not know if this is the cause of all my problems but it is some thing different that I can see. I use Eudora for email, could a setting for attachments been changed somehow? thanks

Could be both.

One thing with WitP, the save games are MUCH larger then in UV and some email systems are not too nice in their handling of mail ... go back a turn and see what you get.

Oh yes, much larger, I'm on dialup and turns take 10-15 minutes to arrive/leave. I am at work now, but two things will happen when I get home in around an hour and a half.
1) Check Eudora and the settings on attachments.
2) Delete the save file from WitP that we normally send our turns as. Thinking that the arriving file will not change its name if the file name is not already there, maybe this renaming is messing up the turn. Have already emailed Ed for another resend.

Thankyou Mr. Frag for your thoughts on my problems! Looking through the forum its not hard to notice your near immeadiate responses to our various issues. This effort is greatly appreaciated. Thankyou for your dedication to this wonderful game![&o][&o][&o]

Thanks Ed, hope I can find an answer when I get home. I'm about going crazy! My next game could be "AR-15 with 40 round mag VS Dell computer"

Ohhhh, it will be a sight to see, the game will be short, 40 rounds can go quick, maybe 7.4 seconds!

Of course I will need a new computer since I'm sure the current one will probably not want to start up.

Heading to the Kroger and home, will email you in an hour or so about what happens when I try to download the turn, bye....terry

BAMBAM.....BAM.....BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM BAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAMBAM BAMBAMBAMBAM click, as bolt locks open.......No, that did not happen as I was finally able to get it to act right. My Dell lives another day!

After a second try, was able to download the turn and it finally asked for the player 2 password, game seemed normal and allowed me to issue orders. Two things were different from the earlier attempts. 1)Only one file was downloaded, I already had the combat save so it was not sent this time. 2)I deactivated my McAfee virus protection. Not sure how either one of these would cause the turn to ask for the player 1 password when the Japanese player had properly ended his turn! But I will concentrate on the McAfee with upcoming downloads to see if that is the problem.

That one is generally the guy at the other end hitting save instead of end turn [;)]
