Try to hide your panzers into forest etc. and put some decoy trucks (and remember to place 37mm AA-guns and FlaK-vierlings nearby ) into open areas...these lure pilots to waste their rockets and cannon rounds, and if you're lucky, you'll nail some of those dreaded allied planes with AA-guns

Also, try to place your AA guns well; make sure they are in cover themselves since planes are also attracted to them. If possible, form a 'network' where neighboring flak units can cover each other. Not moving them has 2 advantages: they'll become concealed and their hit-chance percentage will increase. And aviod the temptation to set their range to maximum; the many low-chance shots will use up their ammo and give away their position (I'm sure your opponent will also target his arty on them once spotted).

I haven't played any late war pbem games, my only experiance with that time frame is from a German WWII campaign. By that time my core had one wirblewind for every two tanks, and half of my support points each battle went to buy 20mm quad flak. I never lost a tank to air from mid 43 on.
If your opponet is spending 1000 points on aircraft then you need to spend 1000 points on AA. If he is spending 3000 points on aircraft, then spend 3000 points on AA, they also work well as light vehicle killers and chop up infantry as well.

1000 points of AA will take out 1000 points of planes, most before they get to the target, the trick is creating an umbrella of steel that planes can't penetrate. A few AA guns spread over the map will take potshots. A swarm of them will shred planes.
thanks, John.

You really are developing a trauma because of my Mitchells, Alessandro .

I think the trucks decoy will work very well for I had another game that my pilots allways preferred the halftracks instead of tanks.

Forget about hiding tanks from aircraft, they have an inbuilt secret transmitter, sending position to any enemy aircraft!
Try hiding tanks in Wood/Rough/Entrenched hexes with weather 5 (thunderstorm) and visibility 1 at night, give AI aircraft with experience/morale=0 and see what still happens!

Bug? Feature??

I hate even more those B-17s. Heavy AA fire will quite easily drop them, but still one strike on a tactical position usually ruins the entire infantry-based defence system one 7x7 hexes area - and you have to rely on infantry on 1944 mid onwards to deflect enemy attacks.

I personally place my tanks not far behind, but instead on scattered positions near my second defence line (if I have one). Placing a hell lot of AA will usually drop down any other craft than P-51s (I shot one down yesterday!), but the front line remains a problem. Flakvierlingers are now sometimes replacing my MG42s as infantry killers, and they are also sometimes able to shoot down a bomber or two.

However, the best tactics is to place trucks on open terrain, scattered widely, and cover them with AA guns. 88mm air arty is sometimes great, but I still prefer small-caliber guns - they are more accurate, shoot and reload faster and are better in anti-infantry role. The tanks can be busted with infantry.

Usually - cover you infatry, since if a breakthrough occurs, it will be a tough task for even a Panther companyt to beat it back.

Whenever I command German troops in late WW2 I always buy couple of Whirlwinds and Flakpanzers to support my attack forces. Their mobility is good so they can move along your other forces. 20 mm flaks are useful in defense scenarios because you don't have to move (and they are cheaper). Sometimes even halftracks can drop attacking plane. So if you have mechanised platoon, remember their halftracks...

It 'should' help some too, if you try to purchase tanks and tank destroyers which have some sort of AA gun on it, instead of variants which do not. I don't understand the fire control rating, and some of those other target-related things, but I would think trying to purchase tanks/TDs which have higher ratings would help too.
