4.0.1 1280x800 bug

Post by Pheonix Starflare »

No matter what, i cant have the game start in 1280x800 (i have a widescreen monitor, obviously). It always opens in 1280x960, even when i manually edit the video.cfg file (errlog and video.cfg both attached). Furthermore, when I load any resolution higher than 1024x768 (which results in distortion because of my widescreen), black bars appear around the top, left and right of the SS screen, shifting the screen down and cutting off the bottom 1/8th of the screen. Everything is in the right ratio, but its shifted downwards. Let me know if you want a screenie of the effect.

Once you are in the game, can you switch to 1280x800? And if so, does it look OK or is it still distorted?

4:3 4 Ever...

Heh. Anyways. You know I've never really gotten the how & why of Widescreen. Does it operate with a larger FOV?
@TheDeadlyShoe> Unless, say, you could make black holes at will.
@Razeam> I can do that but I don't want to.

Does the 1280x800 option even show up in the menu? I'll have to trace through the code again tonight. I see that the errlog says "1280x960" even though the height setting is 800. Some part of the video mode settings code must be trying to make the settings conform to standard 4:3, I'm just not sure where. This is actually a "feature" so that if you type random numbers like 1000 x 700 in the video.cfg file, the game will at least try to do something sensible.

As to how it's "supposed" to look, I don't really know. You're the only person I can find who has a widescreen monitor. Which, btw, is why I have no way to test this display mode. If I had to guess, I'd predict that the center 1200x800 part of the screen should look like the normal 4:3 display, with an extra 40 pixel wide strip on each side giving you a skosh more lateral vision. Oh, and the MFD's and stuff should be all the way to the sides of the wider screen.

What happens is that once in the game, I go to the options screen, and click on the video button. I click on the resolution drop-down tab and among many others, i see a pair of 1280x800 settings, one at 16 bit the other at 32 bit. No matter which i select the screen goes dark and comes back up, set at 1280x960.

Aside from that, there is the fact that any res higher than 1024x768 doesnt work correctly.

BTW, im surprised noone else has a 16:10 (widescreen) monitor. I run it at 1920x1200 and i can have two full webpages up at once. However, its prolly not worth it for gamers, too few games really support it. EA and DICE even flat out refuse to support widescreen for BF1942.

If you need me to run any more tests/send screenies/errlogs or whatever, i'll be more than happy to help, just tell me what you need.
