Atlas

Post by Thorgrim »

Removed the EMP, moved the ML from the RL to the RT, upped the HR to an A (0.52 increase). Then I swapped the GCs for AC12s, for the extra punch and smoke rounds. Slightly less stress on the engine and heat reg too. Changed LL armor to M, increased armor in the arms and LOT, with another slight heat improvement.

Looks good, like the changes

Will look at the assaults to make sure thier are still plenty of EMPs left.

I don't particularly like these changes. The AC12s don't fit the role of a long range support titan nearly as well as the GCs. The extra punch and smoke are nice, but don't make up for the loss of the GC's increased accuracy, range and non-explody ammo IMO. Engine and Heat Reg both seem a bit excessive, not that this is a bad thing, but you could probably free up some weight for use elsewhere. After getting rid of the EMP it seems like a safe move to drop the engine by one. The heat reg can possibly be dropped to heat reg 7, especially since you dropped an energy weapon and changed the LL to M, so dropping it to heat reg 8 would be my recommendation. This way you will still be able to deal with your heat in core maps very well and free up some space in the LowT and CBT. I'd use this space to upgrade shield to 3 and add more armor to the CBT, but there are other good options. Arm armor seems a bit excessive to me too, I'd move some from the arms to the LT and RT if possible (by switching to a more space efficient armor), but that is just one of my design preferences.

I think Iceman was going for more of a LR 'run-n-gun' style of play, then the LR support. In that case the heats about dead on with all 'real' weapons firing, shields at max, and moving. A defensive check will cover most of the balance for any incoming heat from the shields.

I agree with your points happybjorn. I would epecially like to see a shield 3 in the Atlas since in can handle it. But here's the catch IMO when you look at the database as a whole; Even with swapping the GCs for AC12s on the Atlas, GC occur on about twice as many assaults as AC12s and there are plenty of other LR support titans.

I'll have another look at the assaults and see if they are other switches that could be made.

Good points. I wasn't thinking about the heat you'd be taking for shield hits and for using the ML (was only thinking of this as back up).

Run-n-gun is an interesting approach. Optimal range seems like it would be between 5 and 8 hexes and the JJs can help maintain that distance, but if you do wind up in close the AC12s are even better.

Ah yes, variety in the titan database. Also a good reason for the AC12s. I keep meaning to go through and tweak a few designs myself, but I just wind up adding my own designs to the extended database (which I've been quite enjoying BTW)[:)]

Isn't the Atlas based on a Mechwarrior setup, though? Not that I've played Mechwarrior extensively to know anything.

Notice that the GMH racks only have 16 reloads, so it's not really a design suited to be a support for too long. Also notice that the GMHs have a min range, and so do the GCs. The AC12s can mitigate that.
Engine and Heat Reg both seem a bit excessive, not that this is a bad thing, but you could probably free up some weight for use elsewhere. This way you will still be able to deal with your heat in core maps very well and free up some space in the LowT and CBT.

The big heat reduction was meant to handle running and jumping, and all weapons blazing (including the ML), and the shield, and maintaining that even in Core. Not because it needs, but because it can. The engine has to keep up though, hence the big one. That ML firing constantly can be devastating.

Yes, that was what I was doing. There are actually 2 designs with AC12s, and 8 with GCs.

I'm looking at the Sodom (for a partial swap maybe), and the Vicious Bite (for AC12s or HMGs).
Also the Warlord, but for swapping some torso armor for a shield.

Was looking hard at the Ares myself, but if you change to AC12s it looks way too much like the Rhino.... then agian... I really wanted 3 AC20s on the Rhino..

Like the Warlord with the AC12s and a shield 1... only 6 AP lose in the RT and LT, and 3 in the CT. and you get a tiny heat improvement too (-0.06C/sec)[:D] and Larkin will like it with a shield.

Try this for a Sodom... it had heat problems anyway... so I swapped out some of the armor, just too many weapons to have that much Dularoy. also had to go down to a DCS5 fro the extra slot[:(]

Sodom: -GC,-armor, +AC12, -1DCS, +1HR, heat improvement (-0.71C/sec)

Another reason I was looking at it was that armor in those locations was excessive relative to the rest.

Yep, that's what I had done too, had spotted the heat problem. With at least one AC12 it gets the smoke ability.

Hm. I could take away the gme's put the ML back in, boost LS to 6 and either go to engine 5 or add two machine guns in the legs. I'll go with the bigger engine for my version.

Your previous version couldn't run with shield maxed. This one can't recycle the ML when running with shield maxed. With the shield on, it'll build up heat.
