Tactics in the desert

Post by BjörnR »

How do you deal with the english in for example the scenario "Objective Snipe -42?
You (germans)have very little infantry and as soon as your tanks are seen by the enemy they kill them with their AT guns. These guns are also protected by dug in infantry. The terrain does not give you much, exept the hills on booth sides of the english position.
I need help with the tactics to win this scenario for the germans. Any suggestions ?

I have not tried this scenerio.

Would this help at all? Dismount some tank crews and use as scouts to find AT guns. Engage with scarce infantry, crews armed with misc weapons, then large caliber or high rate of fire HE.

Your tank crews can reoccupy their abandoned tanks later.

Also, you might find clever ways to use the dust trail kicked up behind vehicles to mask some other maneuvers.

If all else fails, switch to the British side, and suddenly those AT guns will be worthless.

That scenario seems to be pretty hard playing like German. Anybody there made a decisive victory with C&C and Limited Inteligence ON?. ¿HOW?

Well, the only reasonable tactic (though this is presumably not an option in the scenario) in this situation would be to go around, I think, and leave the position to the infantry. I don't see rommel charging head on into a prepared position with his precious armor. But then, I don't have much experience in desert fighting.

I found the specific scenario nearly impossible to win.
But afterall this is what happened infact; Rommell launched his tanks again again trying to regain that position, but with almost no success.
On a general note about gaming on desert terrain, if you play german buy as many 88's as you can and keep them at 30+ hexes from your targets; they are deadly effective on this kind of terrain which normally allows for very wide line of sight/fire.

I have played that scenario a few times, and I do better every time but it's a hard scenario.

You have to use the company of Pz IV in an infantry support role (strangely enough...) and lay down smoke so you can move your infantry in and fire away at the gun positions (the halftrack MGs are really useful against entrenched 2pdr emplacements (if they survive ).

If you can run some of the British guns out of op fire rush some tanks forward and blaze away, trying to supress enough gun crews that you may be able to find and entry point into the British lines and MAYBE you will capture some victory hexes...

... but maybe not

I can vouch for the correctness of Resisti's statement

Thanks for the replys.
It is probably very difficult to win as the germans, I feel. It comforting to hear others thinking the same.
As to the smoke: we have to little!
As to flanking: impossible, they are dug in all arond (hedgehog defence we call it where I live).
Has anyone won this as the germans?
In that case how did you do it?

I can't do better than a draw. But then, I've only played it once. The last few 6pdrs are really hard to get rid of because you're out of HE ammo by then.

Best strategy is to move Italian tanks forward to get the 6pdrs to give their position away. Then hammer away long range until you're satisfied they're suppressed. Then move closer for the kill. Remember to alternate tanks so they don't get a good "firing solution" on any one tank. Long range MGs get kills if you fire enough of them.

I lost one AFV for each AT gun. That's 20. That's why I got a draw.
