US bombs over rated!
THE JAP BOMBS LOSE ABOUT 40% OF THERE POWER BECAUSE THEY ARE AP TYPE BOMBS .the US gp /semi ap bombs lose 0% what gives they are not HE bombs and are getting the best of both worlds penetration & power!!!
ps. no HE bombs in game?

RE: US bombs over rated!
Where did you get that information? is it in the manual? I seem to be seeing the opposite.....I am hitting merchant ships with 1000 pound bombs but they do not seem to be doing anything. I hit one (the Augusta ? Maru ? if i remember) 5 or six times and it did not sink

RE: US bombs over rated!
On the other Side i hit a US AK with 100kg bombs 18 times. And it did not sink as well.
I did not even sink after I attacked it several times with my KI ANN or KI Sonja Dive bombers (Alway hitting sevral times with 100 kg bombs).

I'm not trying to say that US bombs are or are not over-rated..I'm sure you can find examples to support each arguement...i'm mostly asking where he got his information. it seems pretty specific. One thing though....and i understand that a bomb is a bomb...but 100 KG bombs are only about 200 lb's. 18 is alot and prob should blow the heck out of a ship though.

RE: US bombs over rated!
Thanks...I knew it was alittle over double but could not remember the exact amount..so 220 lbs....still not alot....well i guess if you are standing next to it it is [:D] ...

Where did you get that information?
The numbers come from one of the patches to UV where Japanese bombs were reduced in EFFECT and increased in PENETRATION because they are AP bombs. You can confirm that this was carried over to WitP by looking in the database editor. GP bombs have a effect equal to their weight in pounds. The Japanese bombs have less. The 250 kg bomb should have an EFFECT of 551 if if was GP (general purpose) but the effect is less: 370. The PENETRATION is 65, which is only a little more than the smaller US 500 lb bomb at 45. The US 1000 lb bomb has a PENETRATION of 70 and an effect of 1000, showing that it is a GP bomb. He is saying that the PENETRATION values of the GP bombs are higher than they should be.

ok..thanks..

Or is that 2.2 lbs per kg? [:D]

The 250 KG bomb penetrates CA's and BB's
The 500lb GP bomb for the Allies when it hits deck armor or turrets will not penetrate CA's or BB's.
1000lb GP bombs are found on very few planes. The 500lb GP bomb is good but cant even damage the heavier ships in the game.
I would much rather have a load the 250 kg AP bomb myself.

<PLUNK>
Tossing my 2 cents in here... In my game I'm playing I did a Pearl Harbor style raid on Kwajalain and happened to catch the IJN BB the Harauna there. I hit that bugger with MULTIPLE 1000lb bombs from SBD's and got this...
"Deck armor hit"
"Deck armor hit"
etc, etc, etc....
Oddly enough? It sunk two days later. One thing that has to be considered in some of this is FOW. I know it REPEATEDLY keeps coming up, but why wouldn't it? I mean if you're zipping away from a strike after a hit on a target ship, you probably aren't going to spend as much time trying to determine if you had a clean hit or not. And the other guys in your flight might or might not report it accurately.
Which makes me wonder if this isn't just a FOW debate rather then a battle over the strength of bombs...

RE: US bombs over rated!
1000lb bombs will pen the heaviest armor. The largest ship a 500 lb bomb can damage is a CL. And even then the armor on the CL tends to help keep the damage low.
RE: US bombs over rated!
in the game edit for all the info on ratings!

RE: US bombs over rated!
like i said they are over rated! GP lost about 20%-25% of there explosive content so they can penetrate some armor!
and the ap bombs lose about 40% explosive content so they can penetrate even more armor!
but this game rates then as if they HE type bombs.
just as well there is a good edit!

RE: US bombs over rated!
I had a really interesting conversation with a friend (who has designed wargames for 20+ years, and currently works for the US Navy doing simulations for the design of the DDX and LCS) about Dauntlesses and Vals and 1000 lb. vs. 500 lb bombs his weekend, and he stated that interestingly (and counter-intuitively) a 1000 lb. bomb doesn't have TWICE the damage effect of a 500 lb. bomb (if it penetrates)...it only has about 25% more effect.....and all games that simply double damage for a bomb (which is basically every wargame I've ever heard of) that are 2x heavier are wrong.
