Got to love it when the "rapid expansion" takes effect. Taking Noumea is just plain mean. I forsee about
80 Zeros and 80 Nells stationed there. Not sure why he did not take Palembang on turn 1 though.

Well, we're only on turn 4 and we've lost about 80 ships between us so far. The highlights for Dadman are the POW and Repulse pounding 12 aps to dust at brunei and escaping scott free on turn 3, while his cvs hammered the ships in the wake force and sank all of those too.

On the other side of the coin the SRA has been a blood bath as all my surface intercepts and surface raiders have sunk transport and combat time after time.

One of my early combat units was out of ammo and ran into the Boise and she pounded them all quite a bit - last turn I caught the Boise and Houston and ended the last real threat in the southern SRA (POW and Repulse are still out there somewhere however).

Cat and mouse in the pacific and Dadman looks to have succeeded with eluding KB. He hit wake and then when I was expecting him to try and get back to pearl by going north then west, he actually went south (nice move) and threw me way out of position - and came very very very close to sinking my replenishment tf which is running for Kwajalein - he may yet catch it. Unfortunately, with the fuel situation the way it is I know I won't be catching his cvs with KB.

Noumea was a chip off the old Frag block, and am enjoying my success down there, even though a few kiwi ships turned up to ruin the supply effort (too late, I've got CD units, troops and enough supplies to push SOPAC into the ocean off the other end of the island).

Other highlights have been we've seen a crazy allied admiral cross the T of a jap destroyer squadron at night at 8000 yards (which resulted in the predictable long lancing of basically the entire allied squadron as it should) and we've seen the Yukikaze get hit by a 6 inch shell that found her magazine and they're finding parts of her as far away as china . . .

Hi, No Luskan has his own style. I'm "old stodge" compared to him. I proceed at a much slower pace. I worry about every aircraft I lose. I'm not really into "Razzle Dazzle"

For example, in my current game I captured Singapore on March 17 1942. Much too late for most speedsters. However every Japanese unit that entered the Singapore hex had "Singapore 100" in their objective area. Japan does not build much in the way of replacement equipment so I am careful how much I lose. All the units involved in the Campaign for the Philippines finished with experiance over 95.
In late Feb I returned almost the entire IJN to shipyards and kept them there till they had 0 system damage. Now in mid March I am starting my operations in the South Pacific. (While 4 of the CV rampage the Indian Ocean)

So we can compare when they get there here are my March 20 1942 totals

Allied aircraft 1151
Japanese aircraft 366
Allied Army 5872
Japanese Army 187
Allied Ships 176 (FOW) (1856 points)
Japanese Ships 17 (Actual)(113 points)
Allied Score 3561
Japanese Score 11743

Mogami,

Do we need to start a collection for you, so you can get back on your playing and AAR telling feet? I can not wait to learn through your AARs that you will post. [:D]

Mogami,

Do you find you are not prepared enough, infrastructure wise in the south pacific when the americans arrive in force because of your slow pace? Just curious, what you have said makes perfect sense, just that building up airfields and ports and forts take time.

RE: Luskan v DadMan: A Banana Republic?

Post by mogami »

Wow that would be nice. I think for 200 a week I could drink beer....er play WITP 20 hours a day and post AAR for 10-15 PBEM games.

In the South Pacific I consider myself well ahead of schedule. The historic Port Moresby Operation occured in the first week of May 1942 and it was not really of the scope that I plan on using. I've had Rabaul for some time but have been building it to support future operations. Currently Kaga Akagi and the 3 CVL are busy clearing out enemy TF (I caught them building Buna and Gilli Gilli) I'll be several months ahead of history. Before I can support operations anything I send can be considered tagets hanging for the enemy. Now I can cover my operations.

RE: Luskan v DadMan: A Banana Republic?

Post by Ron Saueracker »

ORIGINAL: Luskan

Other highlights have been we've seen a crazy allied admiral cross the T of a jap destroyer squadron at night at 8000 yards (which resulted in the predictable long lancing of basically the entire allied squadron as it should) and we've seen the Yukikaze get hit by a 6 inch shell that found her magazine and they're finding parts of her as far away as china . . .

I think we goofed on the location of SOPAC HQ. Not sure when it was formed, but I'm sure it was located at Aukland, NZ until Aug 1st, 1942, when it moved to Noumea.

I don't know...............I still think that taking Noumea so early is a real stretch for the IJN.................time will tell.

It's a gamble moving my carriers to the south, but going north takes them out of the battle and away from targets of opportunity. I'm shaping my course to keep enough distance away from Truk and Kawajalein... and saying my prayers.

Admiral DadMan,

Will you be posting any comments/discussions about tactics and decisions on strategy or will you just post the AARs with comments in them. Just curious. I play the allies and am always interested in other people's tactics. Thanks.

Admiral DadMan,

Will you be posting any comments/discussions about tactics and decisions on strategy or will you just post the AARs with comments in them. Just curious. I play the allies and am always interested in other people's tactics. Thanks.
Not sure there's much to tell about strategy, other than to use the analogy of an old lady in a bar room fight; she has no business being there, and is best served getting the hell out of the way.

There is not much I can do to stop him, but much I can do to slow him down. It's Calculated Risk: Rock 'em, Sock 'em, but don't lose your shirt.

Battle of Kwajalein

Post by Luskan »

Well, I'm not sure what Dadman was thinking, but I'll post what I was thinking in the battle of kwajalein/wake.

Initially, I did something really really smart. On turn 1, I decided that KB didn't need those BBs, and certainly didn't need half of the destroyers for the raid on pearl, and so I sent them elsewhere, getting more surface forces AND making Kb much more fuel efficient. This turned out to be the difference between victory and defeat.

Well, you all know Nagumo's boys didn't do a great job at pearl. In fact, they did a poor one at pearl, netting just 2 bbs, and damaging the others. At the same time, Dadman blew the hell out of 3 or 4 cls, 5 dds, 5 aps, and a bunch of aux ships at wake after my lightning fast invasion (stranding my units there with 0 supply). He did it well with a cv north of wake and one south of wake, both doing coordinated airstrikes from 2 hexes away (very impressive stuff, I think VADM Brown was running that show?).

Well needless to say, Nagumo about faced and hauled ass towards Wake - and at this stage I haven't even considered my fuel problems. I also had considered the fact that I'd moved all the level bombers out of kwajalein to palau to pick off straggling transports out of the PI (and there aren't any at truk to begin with). This was a mistake. Big time.

Anyhoo - Dadman timed it brilliantly, and when he saw me coming a turn later (he had 2 turns wasting wake) I knew he was going to high tail it out of there. I assumed that he would go north - like he said, away from the battle and targets of opportunity and try to loose me in that big blue area up there. I sent my cvs due north at flank speed to cut him off before he could get around me. What did the bastard do? he went south, to abour 3 hexes northeast of Ponape - a little island exactly between truk and kwajalein.

Now ponape has a base force and airfield - had I should say because dadman aws smart enough to wipe the place off the map. Now on his way south, he sends the turn in his email with a crack that went something exactly like this:

/quote
I see that KB is coming to relieve Wake. Are you sure you have enough fuel for that? You did remember to get you tanker train out of the way, didn't you? (evil grin).

Nagumo: "Why are we slowing?"
Genda: "We're, um, out of fuel, Admiral. Maybe these nice Americans will air drop us a few barrels?"
/endquote

I realise that he was correct, KB is out in the middle of nowhere and running on fumes. I panic, and also realise that last turn he came ever so close to my replenishment tf (you know the one with 8 aos or TKs full of lovely lovely fuel for KB)? The bastard came ever so close - but the captain in charge of the tf made the right decision to abandon KB to its fate and run for the "protection" of kwajalein. note, I haven't got any planes there yet.

KB is now too short on fuel to reach tokyo or kawjalein, but kwaj is closer and that is where my replenishment tf will be. I know that I'll never catch dadman as he'll be away to the south and into the solomons and murdering my tfs coming north from the noumea raid (I know that was his plan). I had zuiho and taiyo etc. racing but not yet at palau, he was through the net and home free. Kicking myself really hard, and swearing lots, I ordered KB for Kwajalein.

The next run arrives and my fears are confirmed, dadman's cvs are now south of ponape, and have punished the base force there once more (to be honest it didn't even occur to me to put planes in there). KB is now about 10 hexes away, just NE of Kwajalein and OUT OF FUEL. They are moving at 2 hexes per turn, and there is no point sending the replenishment tf to them as they will arrive in kwaj next turn. No offensive air missions from them, it is all downhill from here. i then moved 2 squadrons of nells into kwajalein to make sure that this mistake was never repeated.

Next turn the allied cvs would go from about 6 hexes from truk and kwajalein to about 16 hexes and completely unspottable. Or so I thought.

Turns out Dadman got greedy. Very very greedy. I don't know whether he ordered his cvs closer, or whether VADM went off on his lonesome and reacted to my cvs (but I doubt Dadman left them on react?) but this turn loads up, and where are his cvs? 3 or 4 hexes west of kwajalein (too far for devastators). What a nutter. KB arrived last night and refuelled, but I had only 10% CAP over them (trying to conserve fuel I thought), and no fighters at kwajalein. The battle was very very nasty.

It opened with my planes not spotting the bastard, and then spotting them in retrospect when a wing of buffaloes and dauntlesses comes in and bombs KB - fortunately my elite 15 zeros on cap beat them off and no hits were scored, although I don't think they shot down that many. One of the allied cvs launched at max range - the other did not launch at all. Then, of all the infuriating things, the combat report goes off to some uninteresting air raids in malaya - making me wait, heart in mouth, to see what happens next!

KB, having refuelled during the night, now has fuel for offensive missions, thank god, and Nagumo launched a punitive raid back, which blows through the enemy fighter cap and pounds the enterprise until she's a burning wreck. Started off with 3 big bombs through her flight deck and after that the torps started to find their mark. Nagumo only launched HALF the a/c available to KB, I wonder if this is because he'd used some op points refuelling?

Then Kwajalein launches its own raid with claudes and tired nells (tired because they flew in last turn, they weren't expecting battle. I thought these allied cvs would be long gone). The nells performed poorly - as can be expected, and note - enterprise had not sunk yet, but in the cloud of smoke about half the nells couldn't see her, and the other half missed (a few had a go at some cas).

So we go into the PM phase with 1 allied cv sunk, and I'm wondering where the hell the other one is? Why didn't it launch this morning? Why didn't my bombers attack it this morning? We'll never know as the lady lex fronted up and launched her preemptive strike at KB and again my elite fighter pilots saved the day. The dauntlesses did get through however and put a bomb into the water next to the shokaku - well that is what the combat replay says anyway. The truth is that they damaged her by knocking out an aa mount with that 1 bomb. Thankfully, this was all the damage that KB took.

Nagumo launched half his aircraft again, this time combined with the tired nells, and although the nells didn't hit anything, KB's kates certainly did. Enterprise and Lex sank shortly after the battle. Was a VERY intense battle, and although I came out well on top, I wasn't expecting it, and if the two allied cvs had launched together that morning - or more importantly, from 1 hex closer with torp bombers, or even the turn before while KB was out of fuel . . . well it would have been a very different story. The nells didn't score any decent hits IIRC, and they were just for show.

All that remains is for me to post the combat report, and hunt down the surface combat elements of VADM Brown's fleet. Reports say that VADM went down with the Big E, so I'm not sure who is in command now.

Nagumo only launched HALF the a/c available to KB, I wonder if this is because he'd used some op points refuelling?

You were in the same hex as Kwajalein, right? Only half the planes will fly if their CVs are in the same hex as a base. Keeps people from camping in a base hex and gaining the protection of the base's CAP.

Intense fight! USN rocked by the loss of 2 CVs. What happens next? [:)]

Every allied sub in the Pacific would have been on me like ants on honey. LUCK.

As Raver will tell you, 95% of all my victories are lucky [:D]
I was in a base hex - you are obviously correct hawaii 5-0.

What happens next? Well Dadman gets the turn, goes on an intense bout of drinking, forgets that he is now going to get enterprise 2 and lexington 2 in about 18 months IIRC and surrenders! Chalk 1 up for the IJN finally!

But seriously, what will happen is Dadman will have no choice but to bunker down and take the hits as they come now. While he's down I intend to kick him a fair bit. For starters, my conquest of the SRA can go from the "razzle dazzle" plan to the "hyper razzle dazzle" plan, where I steal everything in sight as fast as humanly possible.

Then I intend to steal everything between Truk and Noumea, and there ain't nothin he can do to stop me now. Noumea started as an opening gambit - a nuisance raid to cull one of his hqs that will reappear 6 months later anyway. Now I'm going to control the whole island and ship in some engineers to start buliding forts. He's got the ANZAC fleet down there bombarding my troops in a futile effort to stop them - I'll soon fix them.

Also I should have noted that two turns ago, Dadman sent chinese units into hanoi, across the Viet border. For all you palyers out there, THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE!!!!

Hanoi looks inviting doesn't it? small fort, 1 division defending the place, a vital link on the IJA rail network. You've got so many yellow inf units, hell it is hard to resist I know. But as soon as you cross the viet border, to ACTIVATE THE VIETNAMESE!!!!! Sure, not as daunting as activating the russians, but locally, the effect is the same. Instantly 4 VN divisions appear - 1 at hanoi, 1 at haiphong (1 hex south) 1 inland and 1 down the coast. They aren't big - but are big enough to stand toe to toe with a chinese division, and they only get better. IIRC I also get 4 more VN units later on in the war too.

Suddenly, Hanoi is untakable, your troops are trapped there and worst of all, now I've got enough troops to leave two VN divisions to defend hanoi, and send 2 more, and the big jap division there marauding up the railroad, either to the intersection or to Nanning.

Dadman didn't realise this, and as you see from the combat report above - not a lot he could do but have a go and get slaughtered.
