I don't get wierd noises - I just get CTDs clicking buttons, such as exit, ot a ship selection.
No Codec Packs, and I have done the recommends above; directx9c, etc.
NOSOUNDS gets me back up

RE: If you have updated to 1.20 and STILL HAVE SOUND ISSUES
I set accel to none. I played all the way until Dec. 14th with the sounds on. I do get funny sounds. I don't have combat anim on. I just had my first ctd. I wasn't looking at the screen when it happened unfortunately. The CTD's are still there though.
Updated to 1.21 now.
Updated to 1.21 now.
RE: If you have updated to 1.20 and STILL HAVE SOUND ISSUES
Hope I can shed some light on this sound problem. I upgraded to v1.20 using all the interim updates. I have a soundblaster live card under XP, upgraded to the latest sound drivers and still get choppy sounds and CTD's. Now I have the original UV game, so I renamed the WITP SOUND dir and copied accross the UV SOUND dir. Guess what - sound worked with no problems!! So i can play WITP using the old UC sounds, have been playing for hours with no CTD's or sound issues.
One point is the UV sounds are larger in size than the WITP sounds, and this suggests that the newer sounds are compressed or a different format. I can play WITP sounds with no issues under media player, so i'm not convinced it's a codec issue.
Anyway, if you have the original UV, you can play with sound.
Thanks

you may have done this [:)] - don't forget to rename the UV sounds from .wav to .sfx
Then again it may only work on my PC!!

I followed the suggestion also and am listening to UV sounds now in WitP. Thanks a lot. Now the next question: are the WitP sounds improved from UV? i.e. am I still missing some of my gaming experience?

I don't. Just send an email to Erik, if it's possible to get those.

With RAR it is 187 MB.. Maybe Erik can put these files as an update on the WITP support site.

Since the WitP sound files are just mp3 files with a different extention, maybe it would be possible to use a utility to convert them to wav. It might be worth a try.

Great! Glad it's working for some of you guys as well.
Good idea about the mp3 2 wav, i'll try it later on
RE: If you have updated to 1.20 and STILL HAVE SOUND ISSUES
Followed your instructions for copying the UV sounds files into WITP and renaming them to sfx files. Has been working great since then, with no CTDs or distortion of the sound. Thank you a lot. Love the Game
