Sound cuts out completely

Post by AncientAngel »

Milo, Love the game.. makes me wish I had more time and the connection speed to play test the Beta when I had the chance.[:D]

Anyways I am having a sound issue once I get into the mission. Usually after a varried amount of time the sound completely disappears. I believe its not the game as it has to be my system. Currently I am running Win2K on a 1.3g Machine with 512 DDR Ram and a Ati 9600..

Is an optium setting that would recommend? Yet not disable to much of the FX ofthe game.?

Thanks for your time

okay I tried a few things but the sound works for a limited time in game..even after you exit the mission the menu sound is completely gone as well.

The only Video options I have not tried yet is switch the program to software (I do have the newest Ati Drivers) and turning the rez down to 16bit. Everything else is either off or on an extremely low setting . 1024 by 1024 texture mapping. Low Terrian detail with texture mapping all other options are off currently.

I get roughly 2-3 minutes of sound before it cuts out..I can exit the game and get sound bites to work with out issue. When I reload game again sound works just fine until a few minutes into a mission.

I posted a similar problem a few weeks back, and have found that the suggestion of reducing hardware acceleration seems to fix it, though It does become a bit choppy.

Its not a perfect solution but it is better than no sound.

Well I tried a reducing the Video Acl, and the same issue still happens as before. So I went back to and enabled all of my old settings again since it didn't seem to matter, the sound was just going to cut out anyways.

But this time around I got a Fatal Error ...which is posted below

Any thoughts? I am going to see if I have a Sound Card sitting around and try using that instead of my built in sound card.

Well I think I found the issue.

My Graphics Card setting in Windows was at 16Bit for some odd reason, while in Star Shatter it was set for 32Bit. By going back and resetting my Windows to 32Bit I was able to play several missions with out an issue.

I hope this helps if anyone else has this problem

Edit: Well I just re-ran another mission after posting this just a few seconds into the mission the sound cut out. Ods are, it has to be a memory issue with my on-board sound card.

Forgive me if I misunderstood what you did, or if you already attempted this, but I gathered from your post that you were looking at adjusting video settings and not sound settings.

From the Start Menu, Select "Run...", and then type 'dxdiag'. This should open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool Window.
Select the Sound Tab and near the bottom is a slider for "Hardware Acceleration" with 4 values, I've found that lowering to either Basic or None enables the sound to play in game without dropping, however as I said, it remains a little choppy.

Thank you for your help on this matter. Yes at one point I went in and adjusted the sound level in game but not via Direct-X. From what I have been gathering and the missions I have been playing its a matter of Memory resources. The more polys I have the render at some point cuts out the sound. This should be correctable with a PCI sound card and possibly more memory installed.
