Battle for Guadalcanal ? Is that what its being called now And I thought it was Operation Polar Hammer... Hmmm. Last turn a few of my CVs got into range and spotted a small resupply TF at Guadalacanal and launched an attack.. The marine fighters stationed on the island attempted an interception, but the highly skilled zero pilots walked over the F4F4s and slaughtered them... Numerous bombs struck APs and AKs alike.. including a couple bombs destroying an allied DD.

This turn the IJN BBs show themselves for the first time in the war, as 5 of them sail up close to this Guadalcanal and let loose with massive broadsides... The aim was to cripple the marine air forces most likely on the island. The massive salvoes did destroy some 20 planes on the ground and damage a like amount, the marines at this base were obviously unaware of the danger nearby as the shelling killed and wounded over 1500.

Kates from the nearby CVs found and finished off the wounded AK Liran NE of Guadalcanal. The remaining allied ships obviously stopped the resupply and ran away..

I wonder why Rob thinks this operation is aimed at Guadalcanal ? Why not let him build up the airfield and port before I invade.. I'm sure the division+ I have following the BB TF and the CV TF has a nice juicy target planned... I wonder what lies south of Guadalcanal ? Hmmm.... [:D] [:D] And its all unprotected without any US CVs nearby... I think it would be a shame if the supply line to OZ was permanently severed...

Kinda makes you think about the real target AND how many land units I have coming... After all if the attack on PI is understrength... where could those extra units be ? [;)]

The Junyo is scheduled to arrive next turn (not worried if Rob knows this or not - more worried about the possible bug).. SO I have turned off accelerating it and hopefully she will arrive in Tokyo safe and sound.. I'll let you guys know..

I went over the sunk ships log again in detail and thought I would share my findings:

I have lost far to many ships so far to date - with about 30% lost to CD guns, another 30% to enemy subs (mostly Duch, the US still suck) and the rest to either surface or air action. Hopefully these numbers will standstill for me for a while to keep somewhat pace with my construction.

I never mix war with saki... only business.... And as for Operation Go For Broke it is almost a sure thing... I just need to sit down and figure out which assets I will need and get them into position.

No we are using historic reinforcements and I have accelerated the Junyo for quite a while.. Not sure when in Dec I accelerated her, but I did for a long time... Last turn she was 1 turn out, so I stopped accelerating her and POOF she arrived as scheduled... This makes me think that the accleration bug only affects ships 1 day out - thus they go to -1 days to arrival and never arrive... Should be a simple fix...

AMERICAN WARPLANES STRIKE TRUK!

(bbc sydney) American B-17 bombers attacked the Japanese port of Truk in an early morning raid. The American long range bombers attacked the port facilities heavily damaging them and left 10 or more enemy merchant ships ablaze. The bombers were met by a small patrol of Zeros who could not reach the altitude of the US planes. No losses were reported by the Americans and commanders of the unnamed bomb group refused to say whether or not this was the first of many raids or simply a harrassment raid into the enemy's interior.

I couldnt help but notice, right after my bombers pounded truk, Operation Vanilla Ice withdrew from the Guadalcanal region and made a bee line to Rabaul...carrier, battleships everyone. I guess I got his attention .

Well another couple days have gone by and some light fighting elsewhere with heavy fighting in china ... Still...

A highlight of yesterday was my lone sub sitting off Ceylon (forget the base name) found Rob's retreating BB TF.. For some reason my sub picked on the CLAA and attacked it twice, putting a total of 3 fish into her (if reports are true)... Either way she sank just off the coast of his base - in view of all those Brits who thought Ceylon was safe... silly Brits... Japan rules the world...

My fighters also attacked and sunk a PT boat near Balikpappin..

Another highlight of the 21st, was the aerial assault of Bankha base in Sumatra. My paratroopers have finally succeeded in capturing a base... and it wasn't even empty either... they beat up some base forces most likely and sent them running north to Medan. I now have a foothold on Sumatra and the troops and supplies will begin flowing in.

This turn !!! Hmm... My Nells from Tavoy spotted and finished off the AK Louisianan finally as she crept north towards safe harbors... Fierce air battles keep happening over Moulmein but Rob's best fighters (AVG) are not playing.... (At least I don't think they are - figure they are offline resting and getting replacements).. My Nates keep damaging the incoming bombers (not enough firepower to kill anything) and my Zeros are cleaning up what the Nates are leaving behind.. Rob's bombers are getting through, but are so worked up they can't hit anything... Each attack gains my pilots more experience and costs him about 6 planes... nothing much, but I'll take it compared to no loses for me.

Rob keeps sending the same Hudsons back to Amboina every day for about a week now.. My Zeros there keep pounding them... I damage one and the squadron turns around and runs home... Their moral can't be good... He keeps trying to bomb the oil there, but the Hudsons are just giving my pilots moving target practice.. Usually 6 bombers show up and 1-3 return home - the rest are shot down..

Well to answer someone's question, Rob had those B-17s based at Rabaul and just moved them as my night / day attacks didn't get any kills.... or maybe he was lucky and they are still there... I hope..

Operation Polar Hammer....

Well its fully under way... At least the first part of it... the 2nd Infantry Division (fresh from a week of R&R in Truk) has stormed the beaches of Rabaul. They encountered very light initial resistance from the Brits and Oz troops there and expect to capture the base sometime today. This is simply the opening move of a larger attack along the southern front.. Rabaul needs to fall - basically so Rob can't use it as a base to launch air attacks on my SLOC....

Also this morning, troops landed on Kavieng via sub and expect to secure that base today as well.

As soon as Rabaul is pacified, my ships will refuel/rearm and continue onto the next target(s).... Will Rob commit his CVs or surface warships to defend the South Pacific, or let the Japanese juggernaught run rampant through his back door ?? We shall see... As soon as Rabaul falls, I have several groups of betties and zeroes waiting to transfer, as well as shorter range Helens and some ASW planes... Rabaul will be quickly built into a mirror fortress like Truk...

Also Tarakan has fallen to imperial japanese forces with surprisingly little to no damage. Sitting in the portside siloes are nearly 10,000 units of oil... TKs are entering port now and will begin the long haul back home within days... Fighters are already circling over the base...

Well the war on the PI is going slow.. As we all know I do not have enough units there to win via superior forces, so I am trying to starve him out.. The problem is the all my bombers are still on Formosa and the weather there is horrible.. Maybe 1 day out of 4 or 5 is the weather nice enough to launch air strikes on Clark... If I didn't know better I would think Rob is sacrificing oil to the weather gods.... If the weather would clear for 4-5 days I could take Clark field.. and that will spell the end for the PI.

Its in the save directory.. Called combatreport.txt
It is written over every time you run a turn so you have to rename it and/or move it somewhere safe to save it.

Well guys this AAR has been very fun and a great learning experience for me but it is time to end it... Rob & I have come to the conclusion that we believe our save game file is corrupt and odd things keep happening - mostly to him... Therefore we are scrapping the game and will be starting over with v1.21..

We plan on starting another AAR - provided you guys are still interested.

THIS IS TERRIBLE NEWS!
What are the problems that has stopped the best AAR on the whole Forum to come to this end? Can you enlighten us on these problems? Oh man, after weeks of following this fight, I am really sad to not see it though.
I do hope you will take up a new one, and hope a new patch in the making does not kill that game as well. Or the next....

My problems are basically in moving units around in china.. Rob has been having air units as well as ships disappear and reappear half way across the map... Not to mention his sound problems with our game.. Rob has several PBeM games going on and ours is the only one he's having problems with - so its fairly obvious our game is corrupt some how...

Sorry guys. I have a list of woes, among the things since the patch I suddenly have suffered sound issues which i have forced me to turn off my sound. I have airgroups that I transfer to bases only to find them at their original base the next turn (multiple attempts). I have this bewitching ctd everytime I look at the intel and try to exit. Naturally the ctd happens after I have spent an hour or so on my turn [:D]. I also had a TK or AK based in Karachi, headed for Karachi, suddenly appear south of PM. There has been more then one time where I had transports do this and I would wonder...hey I dont remember sending that there. I had 5 P 40s show up at an abandoned base, then vanish the next turn after I despatced a AK to go picky them up. I heard that one of my opponents suddenly can't get his airpower to attack my subs. Needless to say it has gotten frustrating since I was kicking the xargunites ass but found myself fighting the patch more then him. I'd actually love to push forward, but with the start of the football season (I work for a college team) I have far less time to redo turns so when I can I need to get them out quickly. Plus i still look at each PBEM as a 2 year investment with the game, Id rather have a clean restart since I want to be doing this for another 24 or 25 months.

No worries though. Once the evil Xargun gets me his first turn the AAR will be reborn.
