Ouch, Allied Sub Doctrine off? [X(]

If you are starting from scratch, you might want to rethink that. Subs are far more balanced with doctrine on for both sides and since it now applies to both players, it is no longer a Japan handicap. [;)]

Yeah Sub Doctrine if off for both sides... Doesn't the sub doctrine restrict them to firing at certain targets only and using less torps ? Allied subs target merchies... IJN subs target warships ??

Well what Rob didnt post was the ship losses... Unfortunately his subs hit two valuable merchies stocked full of men and supplies and both sunk (1 AP and 1 AK)... In return my raid on PH netted me the BB California so far - but this is the best damage I have seen in a while - losts of good 800 kg hits and torp hits as well.. I expect a lot of ships mauled due to many 800 kg hits on none BBs... Kinda surprising some of the smaller ships survived the hits... Unless they are sinking now...

Well looks like I made a mistake one turn 1... I try very hard not to open the game as the allies and use it to locate allied ships and units and to just plan as much as I can from my own game screens... I only saw an AK siting in Balikpapin harbor, so I went for the nice airfield and oil base quickly.. Much to my surprise when a cruiser and DDs escorts pop out of the harbor firing.... Not fair :) Oh well... nothing there was sunk so I will divert to a secondary target nearby until I can find some surface ships to handle the allied warships.. Will be a little tough, as most of my warships are already on missions... But I think I can whistle up some CLs and DDs.. If not, I'm sure a couple carriers will work...

Overall I think my turn 1 is much better than last game, but we will see when I run the second turn and see if I can actually capture any of these targets..

Settings:

ver 1.21
Non-historic Turn 1... Surprise On... Auto sub ops off.. Sub Doctrine off for both sides..
Allied Damage control off.. vary setup off.. historic arrivals

Well day 2 went ok. The KB only launched a half hearted attack on PH's repair yards heavily damaging them. Another launch was made but the Vals failed to locate the target.. Hmm.. how can you not spot PH ???

In general a good day for my invasions as 13 bases fell to Japan this turn, including the following: Legaspi, Naga and Vigan in PI. Khota Bharu in Malaya. Brunei and Jesselton in Borneo. Kendari, Wake I, Guam, Wasile, Guiuan, Morotai and Makin I.

Next turn should show the fall of Kuantan and Mersing in Malaya, which will give me the eastern half of Malaya and allow me to cut off any units making for Singapore. This should enable me to wipe out a lot of units easier and before they reach the relative safety of Singapore Fortress.

Several more bases in PI should fall in the next 2 turns, allowing me to cutoff any allied troops left in the north half of Luzon - mostly Laoag and Aparri and the troops that have retreated to these bases.

I took Kendari this turn and have shipped in a lot of air assets, which should give me air superiority in the area - and Nells have a LONG reach. This should force Rob to keep his ships either in port or force them to take wide paths around Kendari.

Balikpapin should fall in two days as Rob has pulled out his surface force located there - hopefully my Nells in Kendari will find that cruiser-led force and sink some ships. I already have air units enroute to Balikpapin to dominate the area around Borneo as well.

Wake I fell this turn and I am pulling most of my naval assets back incase Rob's CVs are enroute. Once it is safe, I will drop off a ton of supplies/fuel and some base units to build Wake into a nice little fortress and airbase.

I lost 3 ships this turn (AP, PC and a MSW) while Rob lost the MSW Penguin at Wake, a PT boat trying to stop my reinforcement of Lingayen - though I'm not sure how he snuck past my warships watching for such a move. Subs off the West coast sunk the AP President Polk - unfortunately it was empty. And when I took Kendari the 3 merchies I damaged last turn were scuttled to avoid capture (1 AP and 2 AKs).

I never leave the KB in one hex for more than a turn - to tempting a target for allied ships, so I move her every turn. We ended up in the same hex as an allied sub, he proceeeded to attack the BB Hiei.. Luckily the torps missed and my escorts pounded the sub. It probably won't sink (being so close to PH), but if he sends it to the port, I can try to sink it via bombing when I raid the port some more.

Not much more to report, except that I think my strategy this game is a lot more coherent than last game and should pay off in good dividends once the initial invasions are over and the bases can be repaired and put into working order.

Using the 4 subs that start the game in Hiroshima, I have laid some nice minefields on turn one. Rob found one this turn and it will probably cost him the ship as the damage will either sink it or slow it down enough to be destroyed via air. I have laid several other minefields and we will see if he finds them [:D]

Well here ya go...

Uh oh Xargun - going for Brunei and balikpapan is asking for the (granted awful but still effective enough to make it hurt) allied bomber force to come calling on your oil fields.
It is damnably expensive to repair damage done in this way - 1000 a point!

PzB has been particular nasty at not taking any of the same locations in our game while I continue to pip the oil out of the ground ready for him to come and capture it. Especially from Brunei - you just cannot get TK there to empty the place!

Naah I don't think so.. I have plenty of fighter squadrons sitting in Saigon, Formosa and Japan doing nothing, so I already have many of them transfered to Brunei and Balikpapin. The only real threat to those bases is from heavy bombers, of which only the B-17s are around and there are not a lot of those... Plus, he has to buy them out of PI to make use of them.. B-17s flying normal height will eventually lose to my zeros as I have a lot more zeros than he does B-17s... and if he flies over their max altitude, then he won't hit crap... So I am not worried... BUT, that is also why I will not be taking anymore oil bases for a while yet - except maybe Miri.... You have to have sufficient fighters to cover them all of he can get lucky and do some heavy oil damage..

All sounds well thought out. When you took them did the engineers damage the facilities very much?

I have kept engineers in locations to promote this but don't know to what it extent it works. If so is it not a good idea to wait on teh oil produsing locations - again like Miri and Brunei and let him get the oil out for you?

Did you have a house rule limiting allied first move.. other house rules? I noticed the BB's where in Pearl... are the Japs allowed to attack anywhere they want turn 1? port attacks?

In our pbem game, Kaleun attacked an empty pearl, as we chose the no house rules.. Non historical t1.
I am interested in the response to the taking of the oil early on, seems risky as stated above, but your arguements about Zeros in the early stages are sound... and by 6 42 you should have pushed far enough away that strategic bombing will be difficult till the b 29's show in 44.. wow can you imagine this going that long?
congrats and good luck to both..

JAPS SAVAGED OFF Balikpapin

(AP Singapore) American naval sources are reporting that a second day of merchant raiding has destroyed a troop convoy off of Balikpapin. The American raiders apparently crossed paths with the same Japanese Troop convoy they struck in Balikpapin harbor the night before. The Americans are claiming the sinking of at least two merchants as well as an additional two of the Japanese escort vessals. No American losses were reported in the battle.

US PT Boats break up Japanese convoy in PI

(AP Manilla) USAAF are reporting that American naval assets attached to MacArthurs command attacked a Japanese Troop convoy today sinking several smaller escorts and killing what the offical called "A large amount of enemy troops who suddenly found their selves trying to stay afloat with full combat packs on." The Army says that the US Navy boats flung their selves at the enemy and it was that wild charge that caused chaos in the Japanese line of ships. The Americans claim that two of the Japanese escorts actually collided while attempting to flee the PT boats.

We have some basic house rules - only port attacked allowed on turn one was PH. Some limits on where/how capital ships can refuel/rearm (mix size 3 port, or any port with AO/TK/AE). Other than the promise not to exploit bugs/problems with the game we don't have any other rules...

I don't have Balikpapin yet - should land this turn and will capture it next turn. My landing force is large enough to push back anything but a large group of defenders - but Balikpapin shouldn't have anything except maybe a defense BN and a base force there - or there could be trouble [:(]

As for Brunei it has suffered 1 manpower loss, 0 resources loss and roughly 10% loss in oil production - same as when I took it much later in our previous game. So a basic BF will do roughly 10% damage to the oil it seems..

As for defending them it is relatively easy... especially with zeros.. Blenheims - main bomber in this area for the first 6 months of the war are easily beatup by Nates, who damage them a lot, but zeros rip through them easily - killing them... Usually my zeros will kill a couple planes and the rest will turn around and run for home without even dropping any bombs.. And like you said, by the time the allies have fighters able to beat the zeros (or at least fight more evenly) it will be mid 42 and the allies won't have any bases within range to base their bombers at to hit these important oil fields. The only real threat right now is that Rob will sortie the Repulse and POW and bombard the bases.. Although, actually I wouldn't mind that much if he did, as he would expose the TF to multiple air attacks and not be able to escape easily - and bombardments are not that predictable as to whether or not they would damage the oil production.. But he's welcome to try..

Well we are running a bit slow due to Rob's week-long absence in some deserted backwoods in Arizona... Or was it Georgia.. Either way all I hear is the theme from Deliverance in the background for him [:D] [:D]

This turn has seen the most surface action I have seen in any turn even later in the game. WOW !!!! A TF of mine chased off several of Rob's Merchies around Palembang without getting in any shots... Several other of my TFs caught some of Rob's AKs near the SE edge of Mindanao and sunk them... My TF escorting the invasion of Balikpapin (it finally arrived after a couple days of full speed) arrived just in time to intercept the CL Boise from raiding my invasion TFs... After a couple rounds of battle the CAs in the TF managed to put the Boise down (a few DD torps helped too). Most of the Boise's return fire bounced off the CAs armor - about time it goes my way !! The TF also caught a Dutch ML trying to sneak into the port to lay mines and sunk it as well (ML Prins van Oranje - has to be dutch with a name like that).

And just when I thought everything was going my way.... a small DD TF of 3 DDs - probably the damn DDs from Hong Kong appeared out of nowhere can caught several of my unescorted TFs heading west for Saigon... The first one they came upon was a lone TK and after a few torps and shell hits it sunk... (probably full of fuel too)... The next was a pair of AKs which took a few shots and escaped.. then the DDs caught a pair of ASs heading west and put a couple shells into one of them too...

Overall a very busy turn... But the best part is... That was only the night phase !!! Never seen so many night combats and interceptions...

During the day turn my bombers from Saigon spread out and found some allied shipping in Java and said hi, hitting an AK with a couple bombs. They also said hi to an AP in Singapore and sunk it with some wellplaced torps.. The AP was unfortunately (for Rob) carrying the MAF Aviation unit - so I'm assuming he just bought it out of Malaya and lost a good chunk of it to the water.... Better luck next time...

In roundabout play a lone Do24 patrol (I think - or a PBY) said hi to a PC and sunk it with a lucky bomb hit. I also lost an AP from previous damage. All in all a very exciting turn...

My ground forces captured Yenen (Rob pulled back) as well as taking Tuguegaro (PI) and Kuantan in Malaya. Next turn Lamon Bay, Mersing and Balikpapin should fall to my troops... and possibly Hong Kong and Changsha - but the last two I'm not sure on.

Once Mersing falls, I will be able to cut off escaping Allied units trying for Singapore. Also when I took Tuguegaro, the units there retreated north into Aparri, which all but signs their death warrants.. The northern half of Luzon is now cutoff from Clark Field and the rest of the PI...

Nagumo must have recieved my email telling him to attack PH again this turn or shave his head and become a priest as a large air raid smacked around PH this turn. I lost less than half of the shown plane losses and as long as I still have sufficient numbers of attack planes, I'll continue to bomb the port. I hit the airfield again for good measure and got a few planes on the ground - but I killed more in the air I believe. I also hit the repair yards again causing minor damage - but this will slow down repairs, eat up supply and earn me bonus points, so its worth it.. Vals are useless in attacking the port anyways at this point...
My Kates used a mixture of 800 kgs and torps on battleship row some more and I would really like to sink another BB before retiring, but I doubt it will happen... I am quite sure those BBs are burning hulks at this stage as I've hit them with so many 800 kgers they can't have much sys left to damage... Maybe one more day of bombing then I'll leave, but that will depend on the number of planes I have left... The Kates are taking a beating in the port attacks... and since Rob isn't coming out to play its harder to sink anything this way..

Rob has also been bombing Bangkok, Hanoi and Saigon - I believe he is trying to kill industry but his worthless Blenheims aren't up to the task - especially at night.

Well here ya go.. Enjoy..

Xargun, pull back from pearl like you've had enough for 3 or 4 turns and refuel, and then slip KB round imbetween pearl and the west coast and wait for a REALLY big tf of damaged ships from pearlt o head for the west coast, and a US division from the west coast to head for pearl, wake or noumea.

The turn started off kinda slow with some surface combat in the DEI where a pair of cruisers and their DD escorts found 4 allied DDs and they had some words.. In the end, one of the allied DDs sunk and another heavily damaged. Their return hits were neglicable or lies - couldn't tell (low sys damage either from a weak hit or normal wear and tear).

Allied subs are vastly more aggressive with Allied Sub Doctrine off and they attacked numerous TFs this turn, but luckily due to poor markmanship and duds only a single PC was sunk. My ASW efforts are useless as I've had like 1 or 2 actual ASW attacks against allied subs so far despite over 40 ships attacking KNOWN sub locations... They are not even going to the attack screen..

Rob continues to bomb Hanoi and I cannot get fighters there due to its 0 or 1 size airfield. Not sure what to do there - it will take forever to build an airfield.

A large surface TF (lead by a pair of BBs) approaches Batavia and Java and are attacked by dozens of allied aircraft - this TF is drawing aircraft likes flies on crap... The good thing is that the allied pilots can't hit crap - and only a luckily Buffalo pilot landed a 100 pound bomb on Kongo which made a loud noise and scorched the paint a little - acted more like a smoke bomb than anything else.. The Kongo amazingly shows NO damage so we can right off that hit by the fighter pilot as an outright lie - I should have known without looking.. we all know how honest fighter pilots are about kills [:D] While allied aircrews are attacking this TF (which btw is trying to catch fleeing allied ships - more on that later) my transports at Kuching and Brunei are escaping the brunt of the air attacks, enabling me to land reinforcements and supplies and get the damaged ships out of port safely.

My first good air attack was launched at dawn by Nagumo's strike force and said hi to PH with over 200 planes.. The Zeros took out the small CAP over the port, while the Vals bombed precious airfield and repair facilities and the Kates went to battleship row... This will most likely be the last day of these attacks as my Kate strength is about 25% now and thats all that will sink ships in PH.. But a wonderful last day it is.. I put more torps into various battleships and saw a Magazine Explosion from a torp hit on a BB - giving me a nice sunk battleship... Low and behold my amazement when near the end of the turn both the Nevada and Tennesee sink to the bottom of PH - a two for one sale at PH !!!! This gives me a total of 3 BBs sunk at PH - my best showing ever - and I'm sure the rest are mangled with all the 800 kgers hitting them for the past 4 days..

My new airfield at Kendari is finally doing some work - although the zeros there must be on strike as they are only putting 3 planes in the air for CAP - time to kill the flight leader and replace him with a real pilot I think... The Nells out of Kendari hit several TFs nearby crippling a bunch of merchies and sinking the CL Durban.

I also got the message that the AO Pecos was sunk - not sure where I hit it before, but it was obviously from previous damage - maybe Rob scuttled it... who knows... but I'll take the points..

On the ground my men captured Mersing placing me 1 step away from cutting off Singapore from the rest of Malaya. My troops also too Lamon Bay in PI - another base falls in PI... My weakened troops land in Balikpapin and attack, but fail to capture the base. The rest of their reinforcements are at the bottom of the ocean due to a foul up in commands to their escorts and some damn allied PTs...

Now on to some complaining... I'm noticing a lot of my TFs are not moving as far as they should / say they will. They list 4 / 4 for movement under full speed, but have been moving more like a total of 6 hexes only... This has screwed up me catching numerous merchies at Batavia with my BB TFs, as well as slowing down other movements to block escaping ships from the SRA and DEI... Has anyone else noticed this ?

Well now that PH is a shambles I will pull KB back for refuel, rearm and much needed influx of new planes and pilots.. I currently have 60+ IJN pilots in my pool and will most likely suck all them up to refit my CVs to 100%.. Then we will go hunting... I have heavily damaged PH's repair yards to the tune of roughly 50% - I am basing this on the fact that I have scored 96 points for damaging his industry so at 2 points for each damaged industry, thats 48 repair yards damaged... That should slow down ANY PH based repairs for a while and suck up a lot of supply to repair it... On both accounts I win... I definately think that is the best use of your Vals against PH - airfield hits, naval attacks and city attacks... Since Rob wisely has kept everything in PH where its nearly impossible to sink my Vals have been free to do more damage instead of chasing down ships... But, despite the damage I've done he has a lot more ships to use now compared to last time when he tried to have them run for cover and I sunk a bunch.. Good strategy for the allies - hide in PH until the KB leaves.... nearly impossible to sink a ship in a size 10 port with repair yards - especially since torps are not a guarantee usage..

Well gonna get to work on my orders - it will take a while I have a lot of work to do concerning the SRA and DEI as well as find good locations for my warships to ambush fleeing merchies.... But here is the report...

Advice for players :O)

meant in the spirit of good gamesmanship.

For Rroberson.

I know you have repeated in the previous thread complained about the Dutch airmen being poor bombers.

I think the problem with that is target selection not only for the Dutch but also for other level bombers you have.

I know you have desire to hit the IJN but I think that isnt a good target for you. Especially with level bombers.

My suggestion is to switch targeting off the IJN ships and hit his FAB(forward area of Battle) In other words hit his landing troops/and or any resource or supply areas in areas where he doesnt have fighters stationed in defense with CAP.

I dunno how well Japanese LCU AAA fire is but think you can low bomb them and at least SLOW his advance on the group. Remember disruption works agianst ground troops (i think) in battle.

A better use for your bombers I think.

For Xargun.

Same thing different flavor. Hit his isolated LCUs (those without CAP cover) with you less glamerous bombers (saving your Betties and Nells for main bases)

He cant cover every unit and repeated air attacks weaken his defense.

I have seen you doing this in this battle so far. Just keep it up not on units near your LCUs but also on any within range to weaken him until your troops get there.

Thats all for now.
