and "command" was a word you had to use somewhat with tongue and cheek. Often Stillwell couldn't get them to do much of anything because the Chinese generals would refuse to play along unless Chiang gave the nod first. Created quite a few political fallouts.
RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
Well I am having no trouble with my Chinese units in Burma, solong as they have a bowl of rice they are happy as larry. Luskan as you have all seen, has been somewhat foolish in sending unescorted APs to the DEI and have been gining my bomber crews lots of experience in bombing ships at sea. They are now ready for the first string if and when Luskan sends them forward.
In what has been described as a blaack day within the RAF 12 Blenheim IV were shot down over Rangoon when their fighter escort failed to show. Not since the loss of 18 Fairly Battles over France in '40 has the RAF been slapped in the face so hard. RAF high command in the far east are now looking at their options regarding this bomber type and it is expected that they shall be withdrawn and replaced with Wellingtons.
In the meantime, my uber carrier battle group is currently stalking a jap TF which is yet to understand just how close it is sailing towards it's doom. Luck, for once, has been on the Allies side and so far they have not been spotted. It is currently sailing on a equal course of south by south east. I just have to try and sus out if it is a trap or just a stupid jap mistake.
For months now I have been putting together my plans for the defense of the DEI....and as Luskan has found out at Medan (which cost Luskan around 1000 killed and wounded) the DEI is not going to be what he thinks it is.

Fortunately my little scouting trip is over, and my cvs are all returning to new stations. Hopefully I'll be able to exploit Raver's putting all his eggs in the one place - even if it starts costing me a few ships.

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
The Dutch air units have now for the last three or four turns been blasting Palembang's oil and scoring 2 oil hits per turn.............the Dutch airfarce rules the skies over the DEI !
The RAF, still smarting from the bitch-slapping in Burma has now switch targets.............lets see if that helps.
For the last two months the Aussie coast has had 6 large minelayers going from port to port laying mines in the expectation that Luskan will come waltzing in and "BooM !".
On the downside Luskan's ASW surface units are getting very good. I have lost more subs in the last four weeks to ASW that nearly in the whole war. Mind you Luskans thought on what a ASW TF should consist of is lumping in all the PGs MSWs and PCs that he can find till the size of the TF is nearing the 25 ship limit, then send two of these monster uber ASW TFs after the subs..........bugger him but it is starting to work.
I guess that I have less than two to four turns to complete my bolstering of the DEI before the storm hits.........oh boy is Luskan going to get slapped!

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
Fortunately, I have a plan. More than that, I have a large number of units coming off the refit register. My plan for sumatra is rolling forward, and although I nearly wet myself with 9 measly beauforts claimed a torp hit on kongo, in the surface combat that afternoon where kongo hnuted down a lone allied ak trying to sneak supplies into the starving allied troops at akyab, she wasn't even smoking.
I'll posta screenie since Raver doesn't believe me. Kongo is unhamred, although sys damage is starting to mount. Kongo Haruna and Nagato have been in constant sue and the wear and tear is going to need some fixing, fortunately, Ise, Hyuga, Yamashiro and Kirishima and Hiei are all back to a nice round 0 for sys damage - which is also what almost all (bar 1 stubborn one at 5 sys) my fleet cvs were at a few weeks ago when they moved onto station. No big thunderstorms have got them yet thankfully.
I'll have to post what I think at this stage of the game a bit further down the track. I think I've lost momentum, but I think Raver has been impatient to take the initiative and is deluding himself in the DEI.
A few facts as I see them however - I'll admit that the worm has started to turn, here are the principle reasons why:
1. My failure to move into the SRA fast enough (I really should have done a better turn 1, and rather than waste time with palces like rabaul I should have been storming the DEI by week 2).
2. China. I've got lots of extra resources and oil and industry in china now, and the entire railway line and northern road network. Unfortunately I only wasted about 70k of Ravers troops and he has more than replaced that by now - RAver's early strategy here is a gem and I'd urge you allied players to swallow your pride and follow suit. By 44 those yellow units are going to be so prepared (and therefore experienced. Every turn your units spend at 100% prepped for a future objective they roll to see if their experience improves). China has been a failure, with at least 3 southern area army divisions stuck there whent hey should be in Oz marauding around the east coast or somewhere.
3. Burma was a result of my slowness in Malaya, PI and of course, China. I know a few tricks now that would have sped these earlier conquests up. Mainly preparation on turn 1. Even so, I think I might still be able to drive through Burma's defences once the DEI is dealt with.
Onto the good reasons - things in my favour lately.
1. I've repaired the oil hits faster than he's made them at palembang, and rangoon. Lots of eng units that haven'y had any losses.
2. Dutch rule the DEI skies because . . . they are the only ones in it at present, save over bali (and search aircraft. I KNOW he can't resist the lure of a good invasion tf).
3. My economy is growing and has a nice surplus at the moment. This won't last, but for the next 6 months at least, I've got no pressing economic reason to rush the DEI conquest. I'm going to do it carefully and right - like Mogami would do it, with all units completely prepared and all contingencies prepared for. Especially Raver's cvs showing up.
4. My 2nd scouting operation went completely unnoticed. agin, I'll have to post where it was later but I've now definitely ruled two large areas of the map out for Raver's cv locations. Leaves me with fewer options to cover - especially since a couple of them are more likely than others.
5. My armies, thanks to my careful attention to my economy are at 100%, except for the units in sumatra, especially the mixed brigade at Madang that has copped it a few turns running. China's are all 100%, Burmas, PI, Malaya's, they're all 100% strength and my pools for industry are refilling nicely.
6. My pilots experience, for the most part is very good still. I ahve a couple of dud squadrons, but soon as I get rid of those nates . . .
7. I've shown the RN as inferior surface combatants to date. It must irk Raver to have all those combat ships and not be able to use them while the betties fly. The sunk ships list is all in my favour (except the DEI).
8. I've lost very few transports, although I do have about 50 damaged ones (most hit recently in the bali operation). Those damaged transports are going to be slow to repair because I'm keeping the bigger repair ports for 1 damaged capitol ship each sort of thing.

Luskan,
I was under the impression that engineers do not help with the repairs or speed repairs up of HI/Oil/res.
Do engineer units help speed up the repairs of these items? Please say yes. I have a ton of available engineers to repair Palembang that was hard hit by my invasion.

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
The Allies are have now prepared them selves for the coming battle of the DEI. Luskan has to come and come soon. The BIGGEST problem that is causing me constant heartburn is the lack of airfarce base units in Australia. Time and time again, I have squadrons and wings of aircraft based in southern Oz that are only at 50% operational strength because of a lack of base units. Reinforcements from the US are due in any day now.
In China I have started to patrol, and am pushing small units close to the Japanese lines.........I expect Luskan to respond soon as he cannot allow my troops to sit there and get free info on troops and unit sizes. My plan in China has worked like a charm..........retreat deep into the heartland of China with as much of my forces intact as possible. As Luskan has already stated, he has been forced to keep troops there that would have been better used elsewhere. Given another 12 to 18 months and I can start thinking about a general offensive, even sooner if Luskan slips up.

Why? I have my economy up and running, although it seems in recent times I've started to empty the pool of replacement guns (especially the 40mm aa gun) but that will refill slowly. As I said the only time factor I've got to worry about is the rate of reinforcement - the longer i wait the more units Raver will have to throw back at me. Soon? Not really.
Raver doesn't do things by half measures ladies and gents. In UV he decided to invade townesville in 11/42. He literally sent every ship and every inf unit in the jap oob in to arrive on the same date. Needless to say I spanked him but I'm hoping that thoroughness has continued here. I'm hoping that the DEI is positively PACKED with allied troops. That way there are lots of places on the map that aren't packed with allied troops. I've got my eye on a few possible possessions for operation splatter. I'm going to have to do some careful scouting however. Nothing worse for the jap player than telegraphing your intentions. Just asking to get sunk.

Well Raver has moved 1 unit into hexes beside each of my bases to get some intel. But he doesn't really expect me to send units out of my massive forts to fight fair does he? Just to drive those little chinese units off? Gawd no. I'd send a division out, they woiuld beat the chinese division and then find 50 more 1 hex away advancing down on them.
I would much prefer that Raver reveals his spearheads first (I'm predicting Hanoi and Sian but that is just because they're obvious targets - although any chinese army at hanoi runs the risk of being flanked but anyway) in 12 or 18 months. That way the troops he CANT see, the dozens of divisions and regiments etc. behind my lines and out of sight can move lightning quick up and down my railawy line to the threatened part of the line. About the only place I can't reinforce to untakable levels is burma! Hoping raver's chinese units there are in the area of 10-15 divisions (chinese so 1 good jap division = 2 chinese ones). I could handle them and the allied armoured units, and the 3 or 4 real uk divisions Raver must have by now. I'm hoping to get onto the front foot against them in fact as soona s the DEI is taken care of (however if I step on 50 chinese divisions waiting for me at Pagan or anywhere else in burma for that matter I've got no compunction about loosing face, I'll be withdrawing damned fast).
I toyed with the idea of leaving Kweilin really really weak and empty, and having 6 jap divisions with 100 prep points for the place sitting 1 hex away, but decided that I'd prefer not to take the risk of loosing the place before I could get those divisions in.
I'd say that Raver could break my line in 2 or 3 places - but not all at once. Size 9 forts mean he will need all the eng he can get - and the chinese don't really have any. They've only got them attached to divisions in very small numbers. offensively, they aren't great those chinese divisions.
I've been drafting about 2 operations ahead of the present this whole game (ie. The present operation is the DEI, and after that operation splatter, and after that is the operation I'm thinking about right now). I've designed a few little things in burma and in the pacific - nothing special to be honest and probably not worth code names. Raver probably wouldn't notice.
However I've been tempted more than once by Operation Field Goal where I behead Field Marshals and kick their heads through the posts! Just kidding. Operation Field Goal . . . well I've considered it 4 times seriously throughout the course of this game. 4 times I've decided that the expected casaulties of such an operation outweigh the benefits.
Like stealing Suva in that previous game - it was of fright/nuisance value to Raver only - once he arrived to retake the place to find it empty . . . Well I'd wasted his time, and knew where I could find some of his transports if I really wanted to try and sink them (too far away anyway). Operation Field Goal is that daring, only once I strike . . . I'll be needing troops to stay and die there to be of any use.
Xargun - when I guessed what Operation Go-For-Broke was (and got it wrong), well that is what I'm considering (not your idea, mine!).

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
Things were quiet for too long, so Raver's auto-admiral decided to committ mass suicide.
Seriously though I don't know what the hell he was thinking this turn. First, about 20 AKs appear last turn about 9 hexes out of kwajalein. I think - they're bait - trying to lure my cvs out of position. I ignore them. This turn, they're 4 hexes away or so and my betties at kwajalein (although they're the less experienced ones, and had a bad tendency to all want to sink the same ship - if htat ship was already sunk my sulking pilots would return home with their torps aboard) they skragged about 3 or 4 and damaged a few more. If it was bait -nice try but I know where my cvs are needed!
Then on the far side of Sumatra, a bunch of DDs escorting the Neosho (of UV fame) no doubt a replenishment tf for some allied CVs thought that just because they were on the far side of sumatra they weren't going to get bombed from Singapore about 5 hexes away. Unfortunately I ahd lots of my better level bomber squadrons standing down, and the sallies can't hit a ship at 15000 ft, however we at least put a hole in the Neosho - and so she'll be a neo-sho(w) (heh . . . *sigh*).
I've put all my good level bombers (saving my elite betties - didn't awnt them going in at 200 feet over batavia harbour) back onto naval attack, and I've shipped in a small unit of betties to kwajalein (just the 9 planes) but their exp is in the 90s so once the fatigue wears off I might be able to get some transports limping home. Might even divert a little cv unit for some training.
The rest of the theatre is rpetty quiet. Bali builds up slowly and is almost at the point that I can house my level bombers in there. In Burma I unloaded several new units at Rangoon and the transports are already racing back south not having been spotted, and in China two fresh INF units join the ranks of my reserve force. In Sumatra things at Madang are still a stalemate (Raver's loving that) and I'll be housing some planes at Palembang fairly soon too.

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
Bugger ! And double bugger! I don't run auto convoys, and so only have myself to blame for the slaughter of those AKs south of kwajalein ! It was simply that I told them to load XXXX and head for XXXX with out checking their track. Stupid stupid mistake.
The same thing happened of West of Sumatra, I was simply sending some RAN Dog Dogs home to Oz and the next thing I know the sky is BLACK with Sallys, and Bettys[X(]
Not only did I loose the Neosho but also HMAS Vendetta[:-] Not a good way to loose ships dear reader.
Idiot Luskan has just given me the upper hand in China by NOT contesting my Bde strength recon patrols. And if bananana boy fails to understand what he is doing wrong, well I am not going to be the one to enlighten him. Maybe someone else who reads this may have pity on him and explain the error of his ways.

Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
Your recon is only 1 hex. There are lots of hexes that your strung out units CANT SEE!! (Yes even the ones scanning my northern frontier from behind the lines).
China is stronger than ever, and with lots of force multipliers from size 9 forts, I've got nothing to worry about. The only problem here is that I DO have so many excellent troops in china. They'd be much better used elsewhere (in my other jap games after whooping the chinese back as far as Raver has withdrawn now, I can take 50% of the troops in china or almost that many and reassign them elsewhere. Makes Burma heaps easier having 3 extra divisions etc).

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
The fact that I have forced Luskan to keep so many divisions in China means that I have won not just on that front but also in Burma as well.[8D]

Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
I just couldn't resist. I had not 1 but 2 of my cv divisions in the area, and I had embarked the 2nd string squadrons aboard them (1 zero squadron was down to 68 exp on average - that is actually lwoer than the standard of my pilot pool atm) and sent them out to do a little training. Said zero squadron got lots of bomb hits and came back above 70 exp from one day of heavy bombing without opposition. I will return these pilots to their bases for more training (lots of that going on around the globe! If ever I repalce all the nates with real planes then Raver will have something to worry about!) and will remembark the elite KB pilots as my cvs return to their allotted stations. I'm sure when Raver counts the aircraft involved he'll realise that there only about 40% of my cv strength involved in these raids.
Very happy with the training results, as well as the sinking heaps of Raver's transports. The morale of the story: the auto-convoy admiral is smarter than Raver. Not surprising really.
Raver's chinese troops ahve crept back onto the railway line. This i won't abide so I'll be hurting them soon.
Also, recon results at akyab reveal only 600 armoured vehicles whereas before there were over a thousand. Now I didn't wipe 400 tanks out from bombardments (only about half that at most) so I think Raver has realised what a supply drain akyab is, and the trails out take forever. If he's smart, he's been shipping them north to chandpur to drive around to assume defensive positions behind the river.
I bombarded andaman island this turn just to see if there was anything there - thought Raver might have been reconning me from there or something. Looks empty though. Did lots of damage to an empty facility. Kongo says hi
Also, my intel has said several turns now that there is something going on at Pago Pago. Other than people on pogo sticks. Probably Raver's halfway between Oz and US supply base? Maybe?
His intel is no doubt telling him all sorts of brilliant information about my troop placements behind the lines in burma and china.
Enjoy the CR. Raver probably ahs so many transports his blunder at Kwaj. really didn't hurt him that much but I can hope.

RE: Liar liar pants on bloody fire.
Dear family Luckenbach,
we are very sorry to tell you, that four of your family members were attacked and severly hit by the infamous japanese forces while shipping medicine and toys for those poor little orphans in Australia.
As a result of this day, the allied command will take care never to assign so many family members to a single operation to avoid such grieve as done to your family in the future ...[:(]

Thats right people, I am heading off to Hawaii as of Monday for a three week holid....er consult with my theater commanders. It is a tough job being the CINC of all the nations of the western world, but looks like it does have some perks. This AAR shall continue up until my departure on Tuesday morning (last posting will be on Monday night).[:D]
In the mean time I am sure that Luskan will be able to play with himself.....oh, that didn't come out right.[;)]

Here in the land of Oz we get 4 weeks annual leave each year, and after 15 years at the same company we get 3 months long service leave on top of the that years 4 weeks.[:)]

Enjoy it. Here in the US we only average 2 weeks per year. A lot are lucky to get even 1 week. A 3 week vacation is unheard of unless you are unemployed. [:D]
