UNSC Halcyon Class Cruiser

Post by Cearon »

Any Halo fans out there?

A few months ago, I took it upon myself to make some kind of ship for Starshatter. Something I could be proud of. Well, after dabbling with Magic and getting the .def syntax down, I just decided that I'd try to recreate the infamous Halcyon class cruiser, the Pillar of Autumn. Weeks passed by, and I got around to skinning, and eventually scripting, my Halcyon. ( Magic is an amazing program, simply amazing. )

I never got around to finishing the Halcyon, just -nearly- finishing it. It currently includes:

- One LOD, a higher-poly model. Skinned, and textured to the best of my abilities. (Complete with glowing lights, engines, bridge, and Marathon logo on the side.)

- Shield model, nothing spectacular

- Basic ship scripting. The Def file is pretty organized, see for yourself.

- Beauty, HUD, and map images of all angles.

- Single MAC gun emplacement, no turrets. (Unfortunately.)

I'm by no means an experienced mod-maker, or modeler, so expect plenty of problems. I can still be so bold as to say that it's a fairly pretty model, something I'm proud of. I can't offer support for this ship, so please, only download the files if you know what you're doing. Attached are the beauty and map shots. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

Enjoy:

That's totally awesome. Makes me wish I had the motivation to learn how to use the Magic thing. I played around with it enough to make a simplistic retarded kid version of an x-wing, then I got bored, lol. Of course if I was going to get into modding, I'd have to go with making a Battlefleet Gothic mod (the space element of the Warhammer 40,000 universe).

Thanks! I considered going further and working on a Halo mod. Then I realized that I know almost nothing about Halo. ( Or the Warhammer universe. ) I'm calling it quits with this ship. I'm sure it would be so much easier to work with a really expensive, advanced modeling program.

Here are some better screenshots. The 3D magic window sometimes cuts out faces, leaving certain parts of the model transparent.. I tried to cover most of them up, since the model seems to be OK ingame.

Actually, there's 3 novels where the starships are detailed better than in the game. The Halcyon class like most Human warships has a single magnetic acceleration cannon or MAC (mac, yes they throw in a lot of references to the game developer's past), and I think it also has 6 Archer or Arrow missile batteries. If I recall, the MAC on the Pillar of Autumn was modified to shoot 3 smaller shots in rapid succession, as opposed to a larger single round like most of the human ships. The human or UNSC ships don't have shields, which is what makes them most vulnerable to the covenant ships. The MAC's are very powerful and I'm pretty sure that in the books it takes 1 normal shot to bring down a covenant cruiser's shields, and then 1 more to finish it off, which sucks cuz the alien ships only have shields down but are otherwise unharmed and can take out the human ship before it has a chance to fire again (the arrow or archer whatever missiles aren't extremely useful). The MAC on the Autumn uses its first 2 shots to take out the shields, and the 3rd is enough to cripple or destroy the enemy ship. (Reminiscent of shooting people in the head with the human pistol in the game: 2 shots to drop the shields, 1 to finsih them off). There's also larger MAC's placed on orbital platforms which are powered by generators on the planets they guard and those are capable of taking out a Covenant ship with a single hit if I'm not mistaken. The problem is that there's usually so many Covenant ships present that the humans are so outnumbered that they can inflict seemingly horrendous losses and the covenant still mop the floor with them. For covenant weapons the only thing I can remember is that they shoot some sort of plasma bolts that they can direct from a distance somehow in order to hit their target. This is all from memory so don't blame me too much if I have a few things wrong. [:@]

Interesting backstore. I might have to actually read a few of those books now...
