Work banned Matrix

Post by The Gnome »

Well matrixgames.com has been shut down by my proxy server at work. I guess some admin took offense to something. My employer is _extremely_ loose and the only way they move on anything is some political correctness violation or something that can get them into legal hot water. I'm now awaiting the call into the principal's office.... home of the free... whee!

Just an FYI for anyone else that surfs from work.

Good luck, I guess if it was some other board, like a free the little *** then you would be ok... work probably "owns" your time, depends on the employee aggreement and how you are employed, ie contractor etc... and state law...

I'm an independent contractor working onsite, so I'm not sure how it applies. I'm done in December anyway and already have another client lined up who wanted me to start early. ;) The place I'm in now is such a nuthouse it'll be a joy to leave regardless of circumstances.

Employers want more and more time spent in the office, the least they could do is give you the illusion of freedom to surf a bit on breaks. I have to believe that the word "Nazi" or "Jap" [:-] got picked up by some filter and freaked the admins out.

the word "Nazi" or "Jap"

In the old Newsgroup on PacWar you couldn't use those words. So by habit I type "IJ" or "IJN"

Ain't PC grand?
Yankee devils or White B*stards on the other hand wouldn't bother any PC filter.

I use my personal notebook at work, with my own dial up service, so I avoid these type of problems......

It might directly have to do with the phrasing on top of your screen right now. The word "games" being unremovable from the browser probably played a part. It might not be for the reason that it's a military type site, but just that the word games is there being readable from 20' just becons for trouble. Heck, even matrixmilitary would be better workwise than matrixgames, but alas, this battle has been fought before, and lost.

At my last job the site was banned but it was due to the word games in the page. The firewall told ya why it was banned.

New job has no restrictions at all so I usually keep the forum up while at work. I switch to it while running some large queries or compiling a long piece of code. My experience at the new job is most eveyone browses the net, I've looked in quiet a few history folders while troubleshooting machines. Funny thing is, if they ever decided to ban any sites, they'd probably ask me to help them set it up. [:D]

So you got time to do this and not time to send me your turn??

All right mister you asked for it, here it comes. Don't come crying to me after I run you out of Malaya [:D]

Sheesh Sonny, gotta check the forums before I run the turn, see if I can pick up any hints [;)]

[X(][X(] I never even realised "Jap" is considered to be offensive or non-PC. I use it all the time [:D] Well, my excuse it that I'm not the native english speaker [8D]

As for Nazis... well, those guys were proud to be Nazis, no? [:D]

Try:
http://66.55.131.20/

Might not work but sometimes they just filter on the URL

Jap or what? ok, and they where Nazi, oh brother! Does anyone know the Panzer song highlighted in the movie Battle of the Buldge"? in German I believe it is just that tank song... I read it was BANNED in germany... it really has nothing to do with the nazi's, its just a song for troops... not unike many "US' songs...

Anyone know if the banning I heard of was true?

Might be. Germans became very sensitive about these things.
I heard the plastic models of aircraft in Germany can't have Swastikas on them.

Try using the IP address then [:D]

Personally I'd die without forum access from work. Heck, I actively play WITP, WAW and other wargames in office and am trying to spark the interest among the office mates, let alone browse the forums.

Not trying to start any "US vs. rest of the world" polemic here (I really love the US [:D]), but this fascism at the workplace is entirely American "invention", that is unfortunately spreading around the globe. I don't think employers get any *real* benefit by blocking these sites to their employees.

You mean "Panzerlied"? I am 99% sure it's banned. Now one of Luftwaffe songs "Bomben auf England" may be another thing [:D][:D] This guy I share the office with used to play it all the time (he hates Nazis, but is enthusiast for all things air, so a good Luftwaffe song must have triggered his interest [:D])

But their reasons for banning stuff like that in Germany is that they are very afraid of any pro-nazi feelings resurfacing and want to cut them before they even appear.

Swastikas, the very word Nazi, basically anything associated with the Third Reich or Hitler is illegal in Germany. I know that Paradox couldn't even include the WWII German flag in their game Hearts of Iron because they wanted to be able to sell it in Germany.
This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.
