PBEM save file corrupted?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

PBEM save file corrupted?

Post by KNomad »

My first attempt at a PBEM game ended after three turns when the save file was corrupted. Unfortunatley, I had no backup.

Reading these forums, I guess the problem is specific to PBEM and the solution is not to close the game out right after ending a turn, correct? Supposedly, PBEM saves take a while longer to save than solitaire games.

While I'm at it, anyone got any tips for Soviet forces fighting Jerry in 1941? Should I just paint bullseyes on my infantry & recon tanks? They seem to be good for nothing else. Are the 45mm ATGs any good, or should I stick to the 7.62cm ATGs?

Any pointers would be appreciated, as I've never commanded Ivan's forces on the field.

I usually get as many 107 mm or 120 mm mortars as I am allowed. If you use them correctly (move them around or use smoked hexes to hide their location), you can rout a German force in about ten turns. I prefer 37 mm flak to the 45 mm ATG. They are basically for shooting up light vehicles anyway, and you can chase away the Stukas with them. The 85 mm gun is a tank buster. I also like KV-2's. They are cheaper than forts and have a good punch.

You are correct about the PBEM game. Count to ten after you're out of the game, that should do it.

PS: Enjoying your reports, keep 'em coming.

Thanks for confirming about the timing of saving games.

I'll be testing the PBEM waters with my brother before I jump into games with other forum members. Looking forward to some great battles in the future.

Unfortunately, this will eat into my Stalingrad Campaign time, but I'll try to keep those reports coming in from the front as often as possible.

Now that's one I never heard of! Waiting a few extra seconds after ending a turn before exiting the game. I've had a few experiences like that. Fortunately I was able to get a backup copy of the last turn, so it wasn't a total loss. Thanks!

As for the Russians?? Your first suggestion was the best, just paint bullseyes on them! I've had little luck with them in any stage of the war. [:)]

PBEM save corruption can also be caused by opening the game in solitaire mode and then switching to pbem mode. I have found it is always safer to exit the game entirely and then restarting SPWAW before playing your PBEM game.

To be honest, I have not seen the problem with exiting a battle too soon ever since about version 5 when that happened all the time.
They struggled with a ferocity that was to be expected of brave men fighting with forlorn hope against an enemy who had the advantage of position......knowing that courage was the one thing that would save them.

Good thing I spend a bit of time going through old posts.
Saved me from wondering WTF was wrong with the game and/or my PC. [X(]
