Laws on smoking indoors are good, I always got out of house as a boy, while my aunt wasn't allowed to smoke in the house on visits she sure stank of smoke and I'm allergic..

Smoking/non-smoking areas never were workable in places either, air circulates, the smoke could still affect people also there were always people who would ignore signs and sit and eat and smoke in non-smoking areas.

In USa Smoking really never has been a "right" and I think sometimes people think too many things are a "right"

But lets get back to carriers...

Definately famous subs named after sea critters. Much like the Tang class were. Anyway, Rich O'Kane got a new Arleigh named for him.

Master Chief, How do you feel, as a 23 year submarine veteran, about going onto a vessel designed to hunt subs? Or are the SSNs now considered to be the only sub hunters in a carrier TF?

Always been a big supporter of the total warfighting team! The Tin Can Navy's heritage is just as rich as our submarine heritage!! I'm looking forward to the challenge! Besides, I'm all for anything that hunts the "BAD GUYS" submarines regardless of platform or warefare community. Hell, if the Marines ever figure out a way to take out a KILO running on batteries, I'll give them a healthy ooh-raw and join on up!! [;)]

Have you had a chance to participate in exercises with the Upholders in RN service or as ignorantly named Canadian Victoria, Windsor, Corner Brook and Cretien's home town. Really sad naming calls as they are place names YET again.

Ask because they are supposed to be leaps and bounds ahaean of Kilos and Collins class boats in quietness.

In general, naming things, like ships, airports, roads, parks, etc. is IMHO ass kissing and brown nosing. The individual you name things after should be at least one generation, if not more say 50 years dead to properly determine how "great" that person actually was. Before that it's just party politics and repayment of favors. Like Minetta Airport - who is the current Secretary of Transportation - every time I land there I think "Bunch of Brown Nosers."

I believe it defines Nuclear powered CV's?

CVN came out when Nuclear powered CV's were launched, I recall the CV tag for Carl Vinson while it still operated when the first CVN's came out.

Actually, USS Enterprise was first designated CVAN Enterprise

yes it's too bad. even have an ssn named jimmy carter. otoh we have an ffg named after samuel b roberts (a de of leyte gulf fame) that ate an exocet in the gulf during the tanker war and some of the ddg-51's are named after important folks (like ddg-63 uss stethem named after the navy diver murdered by arab terrorists during a plane hijacking in the med). of course the cg-47 ticonderogas are named after famous us battles.

It was the Stark that was hit by Exocet. The Roberts struck a mine in the 2nd Gulf War.

Actually Stark FFG-31 was hit by 2 Exocents on May 17 1987
Samual B Roberts FFG-58 is the 3rd USN Ship with that name. DE-413 (lost in action 1944) and DD-823.

(I was crew USS Fahrion FFG-22 of same Desron as Stark and USS Halyburton FFG-40 same Desron as Roberts. I believe Halyburton and Roberts were the only 2 FFG deployed to 2nd Gulf War )(Halyburton was from Texas but he was Corpsman KIA and MOH winner)(Frank Fahrion was a WW2 Admiral)

But handguns and assault rifles are. Hmmmm.[;)] What gets me is that people are so into restricting smoker's freedoms (hey, a legal product) that they completely block out the utter single-mindedness of the witch hunt. Can't smoke on patios, outside doorways within a minimum distance etc. This is Draconian. But it's OK to have indoor unventilated monster truck shows, have diesel generators warming pation, allow buses and other vehicles idle next to doorways and entrances. Massive double standard. The internal combustion engine is the singlular worst killer of our environment and is the greatest single polluter of our air quality but it has never been argued by any government or anti-smoking activist group that these vehicles "infringe on the rights" of those who would rather not breath in the fumes and exhaust associated with them. Hell, smog level reports are aired on the weather channel, like smog is a natural occuring phenomena. Blows my mind.[:)]

Allow smoking in bars and patios...they are the last refuge of the smoker.[8D]

As I remember, somebody asked a USN admiral why the navy had stopped naming submarines after fish. His answer was "Fish don't vote."

So now, we get submarines named after cities and states and aircraft carriers named after politicians.

Actually, it isn't. There is also USS Compte De Grasse (DD 974). Dunno if he counts as an American or not, but there is the USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN 633).

Let's not forget about the nuclear ballistic missile submarine USS Von Steuben, which was named after a Prussian military officer who came to the Colonies to fight for General Washington. Von Steubeb became a citized after the Revolutionary War.

Smoking indoors sometimes has its advantages. When Hurricane Charley recently blew through Florida, a man who was at a "hurricane party" decided not to offend his fellow party goers and stepped outside the house to have a smoke. Unfortunately for him, the 100+mph winds blew over a nearby banyan tree and struck him dead.

And before someone goes onto to throw in a bad pun, I will do it myself: "Smoking Can Kill!".

As a life-long smoker allow me to say that I don't have any major objections to the
general restrictions..., Americans have to have somebody to discriminate against, and
doing it by race or nationality is no longer "PC". I won't even mention that while Blacks
were allowed at least the "back of the bus", smokers are not. But is it too much to ask
for at least "reasonable access" to a smoking area? In Atlanta's airport, it can be a
quater-mile walk and a train ride to one of the two "smoking lounges". At Chicago it
can be a half-mile walk. Here in California I've been told "No Smoking Allowed" even
OUTSIDE a number of buildings. Personally, I'm looking forward to the day when the
tide shifts again and we can start arresting these clowns who play lousy music on their
sound systems so loudly that you can hear it two lanes away with your windows rolled
up. My ears have rights too.

For true entertainment value, ask him his opinion on 'Female ships' (ships with women among the enlisted crew).

Didn't HMCS Protecteur (should be spelled Protector) have to cut short a Gulf deployment a few years back because half the crew "were expecting?" Pretty sad. Getting the clap was not a big enough deal to effect a ships operational readiness. This is silly. Same as having all French speaking crews in the Canadian naval service. Let's purposely complicate communication issues. Political correctness blows the big one.

Isn't if a court marshallable offence to engage in an activity that renders a member of the military unsuitable for duty?????

Winston Churchill was actually made an honorary U.S. citizen before he died. So I guess it's fair to name a ship for him.

Maybe we can make the U.S.S. William Clinton some kind of fleet oiler, constantly getting sucked dry by the frigates U.S.S. Lewinski and U.S.S. Paula Jones. In honor of it's role, and a great American naval hero, the Clinton will be nicknamed "the Paula Jones's John"!!!

The U.S.S. Kerry could be some kind of Q/stealth ship. Throwing the enemy off by reporting that it is 5 miles inside Camobodia, when it is actually serving Christmas dinner in Vietnam, or lulling our enemies into a false sense of security by getting itself shot up 3 times in a 4 month tour of duty, then returning home to accuse the rest of the navy of being war criminals.

The U.S.S. George W. Bush could be an aircraft carrier, but opponents won't see the ship because it will hide behind a giant "Mission Accomplished!" banner that somebody (nobody knows who) put up.

The U.S.S. Dick Cheney can be a command ship, sending coded orders to the George W. Bush, processing government contracts for major oil companies, and seldom being seen in public, because it is at "an undisclosed location".
