MY 3rd AAR - SCEN 17

Post by marky »

for my 3rd scenario\, playing as the allies of course i decided to try sumthing, on a bigger scale

emboldened by my victories in my first 2 scenarios, i decided to play scen 17, Decision in the south pacific

this scen, as u all know, assumes the glorious USN victory at midway did not occur

which, of course, will make victory harder, and easier to achieve

harder because-

1. the japs will have akagi, kaga, soryu and hiryu to engage me with
2. the CAGs of the enterprise hornet and yorktown will not have the experience they gained at midway

among other advantages, the japs will have several

nnow, easier because-

1. the USN will still have the yorktown
2. the usn will get additional carriers, ie sara wasp, and start getting indp class CVLS

but anyway, lets get on with it shall we?
[:D]

1 of the first things i did, was consolidate a few BSs into a couple big 1s and sent them to PM. i also sent more FSs to PM, and ordered pbys, dakotas and bombers to start flying in supplies. i also started assembling a couple troop convoys to send to PM, and gili gili

i also plan to reinforce buna, and try to hold it, by transferring troops, and catalinas and bombers to PM, and then, flying them to buna, and or if that doesnt work, ill jus order them to march there

i am also deploying subs all accross the map -

in rabaul, and shortland as offensive, at gili gili and at buna as defensive barriers

im also flying addtl base forces to PM, and engineers to reinforce forces already there

i also intend to send addtl aeril reinforcements, catlinas and bombers to new guinea as recon elements

they will recon lae, and rabal, and if possible i will try to recon the shortlands

on the first turn, an air strike hit lae

according to recon, airfield damge = 14

in order to further damage lae, and prevent strikes from there, and in the future, strike rabaul, i am for this reason also transferring addtl bombers to PM

i am also, of course, sending yorktown and lady lex to PM, but in all likelyhood, i will probably transfer their CAGs offboard, and to PM

this way, i will keep the carriers safe, but they will still play a role in the naval battle to come, and their CAGs will still gain experience. and later, they will transfer back to the carriers

hey, just cuz im a UV noobie doesnt mean im an idiot[;)]

im reinforcing the imminent combat areaas as best i can. i also intend to reinforce tulagi, and the canal, in hopes of preventing their fall, and the bloody struggles to retake them

uh oh, subs and coastwatchers have spotted jap ships at shotland and rabaul, possibly the invasion fleet.....

more to follow....

after i engage the evil enemy..............

addtl update -

aerial recon has spotted a jap task force

10 ships

according to the report, it includes 1 CVL and 2 CVs

theyre just east of lae

my carriers r about 200 miles SE of PM

so i will probably transfer their CAG to PM

the CAGs will arrive in time to greet them..................

update-

u know that carrier task force from yesterday?

well, i hit it, and hurt 1 carrier pretty bad, the rest withdrew

today they came back, this time with 4 flattops- 2 CVs and 2 CVLs

they were hit, sum damage was done, but it is believed to be superficial

im not sure about this, so i will just assume the worst- the carriers r still in good condition

speaking of carriers, the lex and york were docked at cairns i believe, and they were hit by jap bombers from rabaul

lex took a torpedo, and ive ordered her and the york, along with escorts to sail for brisbane to make repairs

ive been training their CAGs, and theyre getting pretty good

i will soon transfer them back to their carriers, and try a raid, probably on the shortlands

i also recieved the infamous CVE Long Island

i put 16 p-400s aboard, and started training them

i also ordered the LI to sail for PM

once repairs to the lex r finished, ill put her in a small AC TF and have her sail for PM, to recieve her CAG back

the current damage to the lex is 26 sys 16 flt

since this scen began, my forces have destroyed 98 jap AC, INCLUDING 43 zeros

no doubt those zekes will be SORELY missed

also, a short time ago the jap CA Kako, was torpedoed by 1 of my noble S-boats

a short time later, she slid beneath the waves[:D]

got to love those S-boats[:D]

at least, if ur the allies.....

which i am[:D]

in addition to the Kako, 3 APS and 2 MSW have also been sunk, several of those ships by the handy sboats...

as for my naval losses- they have been light

york and lex r of course still afloat[:D]

however the losses r as follows-

2 subchasers were sunk, and an AP was TORPEDOED by a jap sub [:@]

as far as i know, the sub escaped[:@]

and the DD worden, wile escorting the Long Island, was torpedoed and SUNK by another jap sub

on another sad note, wile on patrol, the S38 was depth charged and SUNK by a jap tin can

*taps plays*

the brave men of S38, still on patrol..................

change in plans my friends

i intend to have the lex and york sail for PM IMMEADIATELY

i checked on the stats of their aircraft, and theyre more experienced than i thot

i intend to have them put into port, make sum quick repairs, and get out, and uunder heavy cover from PM they will send all of their bombers and most of their fighters to attack the jap carriers, and hopefully, BLOW THEM OUT OF THE WATER

risky, but if they pull it off, ill have bagged at least 2 jap carriers....

in addition, the Long Island will RV with the york and the lex and help provide cover

if i lose the LI, o well, but id rather lose her then the lex and or the york

another change in plans

i didnt get to play yesterday, so im playing today

and operation "suckers" has been cancelled

i ordered lex, york and the li to sail in the opposite direction, away from PM and the death star

aeril recon has confirmed that there r at least 3 carriers in that TF

york and lex r worn down, and the li is no match for them

so ive ordered them to sail, seperately for noumea, for repairs, refueling and reinforcement of their CAGs

i will also order them to train

GG and Buna have fallen, but Port Moresby still stands in allied hands

lex and york r still afloat, as is the LI, which is pretty much BAIT for the upcoming OP

as far as i know, sho, zui and shoho r still up and running

enterprise and hornet will b arriving soon, and they will kjoin forces for a major operation, wat im calling "operation revenge" -

the capture of Gili Gili and Buna

4 big troop convoys r assembling

1 will go to Pm to reincforce the garrison alreafdy there

another will continue to assemble for the invasion of GG, another sdmaller convoy will also b along to retake buna

and the 4th will head to.....

Guadalcanal

y u ask?

aerial recon has spotted transports and freighters in the vicinity of shortland

they may be a resupply convoy, but u never know

they will establish a good sized presence on the canal, and build up an airfield, and to a lesser extent, a port

part of the objectives for operation revenge is....

the destruction of the death star

yes, i know that odds r, my carriers will b slaughtered

but

ive ordered ALL my aircraft, fighters, biombers, everything, to rest and regroup

yes, PM will b hammered a b it, but ill put a couple of FSs on cap

and then, hopefully, ill smash the deathstar and liberate the galaxy, er, the pacific.......

update -

well, i played a few turns

airgroups r resting and regrouping, as well as training for the upcoming operation against the japs

enterprise and hornet will arrive in 8 days

the saratoga will arrive in 15

i have not yet decided whether to go without the sara

but of course, the more carriers i have, the better my chances

with lex, york, enterprise and hornet i will have quite a powerful force

with saratogas approx 100 addtl AC, my force will be even stronger

but, its more than safe to bet that the japs will also be recieving additional flattops.......

there have been a few aerial battles, and a few of my ships have been sunk

some small naval engagements here and there, but nothing compared to the battle that is about to be fought.........

update-

good news

ent and hornet have arrived

ive taken marilan

3 troop convoys r forming

1 will take GG, another buna

the NG invasion forces will be escorted by ent, hornet, lex and york

i hope to bring the enemy carriers to battle and sink them

and the 3rd is going to guadalcanal

ive hit lae heavily

did severe damage to its airfield and its port

aerial recon confirms that the akagi has arrived in theater

wat is also confirmed isd that there are at least 4 jap CVs and 2 CVLs in theater

saratoga will arrive soon thankfully

ive also expanded PMs airfield and its port

tho, aerial recon says that there are NO enemy carriers anywhere near guadalcanal or NG

this is an EXCELLENT opportunity to retake GG, and buna, and possibly lae

and of course secure the canal

there is also ALOT of enemy naval activity around Lae

APs and AKs and TKs

if anything ill certainly get to sink alot of enemy cargo and troop ships

the CAGs of my carriers r resting and relaxing, preparing for the battle that is finally about to occur

i also intend for my LBA to rest as well

part of the good news however, is that aerial recon cant see the jap carriers ANYWHERE within range

theyre not near Guad, or NG or even Rabaul

which means they must b at or near truk, refueling and reloading

which could b very bad

they could ALL b there, and if they join up.................

cross ur fingers, its gonna get UGLY...................

THE GREAT SOLOMONS TURKEY SHOOT

Post by marky »

VICTORY!!!

Operations Revenge and Suprise have been a COMPLETE SUCCESS!

GILI GILI has fallen to allied forces!

Buna has fallen to allied forces!

marilinan and nadzab have fallen to allied forces!

Guadalcanal has been secured!

and

i have engaged, and CRUSHED THE DEATH STAR!

jap carriers were spotted running up and down the slot

i thot to myself, thats no moon, its a space station!!!!!

enterprise, hornet, yorktown, lexington, saratoga and wasp

engaged the enemy carriers....

and in the first DAY

shot down almost 100 jap AC!

Akagi, Kaga, and Shoho were SUNK OUTRIGHT!!!!![:D][:D]

only the hornet has been damaged!

she is on her way to luganville, where an expanded port will help to mend her wounds

once temp repairs r complete, she will sail for noumea, and take a well earned rest

almost 200 Jap CARRIER AC have been destroyed!
at the cost of only 70 allied!

hornet damage report-

36 sys 46 flt 6 fires

it is believed that there was a 4th carrier in that TF, but it is also believed that she will NOT make a safe port

hornet is very near luganville, and should easily reach the docks there

also, a massive troop convoy is forming to take.... LAE

DOZENS of jap transports and freighters have been sunk by the avenging AC of PORT MORESBY!

further good news

as of date 7/26/42 -

553 Jap a/c have been DESTROYED!

in the air, on the ground and at sea!

with the loss of only 184 allied AC

and its barely been 3 months!

i believe that the scope of these victories will severly weaken the japs, and so, the invasion of Lae will take place as soon as possible....................

combat update -

combate date - 8/20/42

a few more turns have gone by

launched a raid/feint against the shortlands with approx 5 carriers and did heavy damage

sunk approx 20 or more enemy ships and destroyed approx 200 enemy AC

very good results obviously[:D]

my carriers puta few bombs into sum jap battleships, even hitting... THE YAMATO

since the beginning of this campaign, 759 enemy AC have been destroyed[:D]

287 allied AC have also been destroyed

a total of 100 enemy ships have been sunk since the start of the campaign, with the loss of only 48 allied ships, from PT 48 to CVE Long Island

strangely, there havs been absolutely NO SIGN of the enemy carriers

perhaps ive scared the AI after the results of the Great Solomons Turkey Shoot?
[:D]

they havent been seen in over a month, and intel says that i didnt get them all

so of course, this leads me to conclude that theyre at truk, reloading and refueling...

and licking their wounds...[:D]

after studying the map, and the strategic situation, i believe that a major blow now against the enemy could furthur cripple the japs and completely stop their advance in the south pacific

after studying the map, and in keeping with the goals being the probable eventual capture of rabaul, i have decided that this blow will come against......

Shortland

my plan is as follows -

1. regroup of all air, sea and land forces, including my carriers
2. further strengthening of guadalcanal, and build a lare AF and port there
3. build up land and sea forces
4. pound shortland and rabaul
5. invade and occupy shortland
6. build up shortland, buna, and gili gili
7. pound rabaul and lae
8. invade and occupy lae
9. further build up lae and shortland
10. execute end around to invade and occupy kavieng, weaken and cut enemy supply lines to rabaul
11. pound and weaken rabaul, preparing way for invasion of said bastion
12. invade, and capture rabaul

so, in plain suimple english

shortland must fall

so must lae

rabaul must eventually fall

it CAN be done

but in orsder to do it without catastrophic losses, shortland will b taken and built up, and bombers and fighters will be based there against rabaul

then, lae will b taken, with shortland supporting the operation by pounding rabual, and preventing airstrikes on the task forces attacking lae

theres going to be a price no doubt, as during the invasion of shortland, rabaul must also be subdued somewhat

with no major airbases close enuff to allow this im going to have to use, wit for it...

MY CARRIERS

yes i know theyll probably b hit bad, but i need them to pound rabauls airfield and throw a blockade around shortland, but they will have help in the form of AC from henderson once ive built it up enuff, then shortland will support the invasion of lae by pounding rabaul daily, then lae and shortland will join together to pound rabaul again in support of the invasion of kavieng.

then, kavieng, shortland and lae will all pound rabaul once more to support the invasion of rabaul

well. thats wat ive got so far

any thoughts?

ANOTHER GREAT VICTORY!

Post by marky »

update -

combat date 9/26/42 -

operation right hook has been a complete success

a number of turns have gone by

another round of successes as another raid was launched against the shortland/rabaul area

and then, 20000+ allied troops landed at shortland

air attacks came from PM, the expanded AF at lunga and the carriers approx 200 miles offshore

in the pre-invasion over 20 jap ships were sunk

during the course of the whole operation over 100 jap AC were destroyed, but at a price.......

engineers were also among the troops that landed of course

and within a week, shortland was CAPTURED and SECURED!

making over 20000 jap troops my prisoners

in addition, several enemy carriers WERE spotted N of rabaul

thats the first time ive seen any enemy carriers in over a month

attempts to engage them failed however, as they RAN AWAY[:'(] to the north

also, a jap sub, I-1 has been sunk by an ASW force

since the begginning of the campaign in may, 961 enemy AC have been destroyed

521 allied AC have also been destroyed

not that shortland has been secured, intend to have the carriers sail for noumea for reloading and refueling, and perhaps have them probe to the south of truk to see if they can lure the enemy carriers out and bring them to battle

i also intend to have a supply and fuel convoy sail for shortland

however, the japs did me a favor

before shortland fell to me, jap engineers had built up the port AND the AF [:D]

with shortland and lunga in my hnands, and the current state of their ports and AFs, i effectively control the solomons

once everything is in position, i intend to take LAE

by the time november rolls around, i should be ready...........

update

combat date -

10/5/42

well

a couple supply convoys have unloaded at my newly acquired base at shortland

a jap minefield is still hanging around tho

ive ironically already lost a DMS to it

so i sent sum more, and theyve really thinned it out

ive also sighted a NEW DEATH STAR

it is close to Endor, err i mean rabaul

4 CVs

theyre heading down the solomons

seems like a suicide mission with all the AC ive got at henderson AND Shortland AND on my 6 carriers that r NE of shortland

approx 800 allied AC will greet the new death star

UPDATE

there has been a carrier battle!

SORYU AND HIRYU ARE CONFIRMED AS SUNK!

SHOKAKU WILL MOST LIKELY JOIN THEM SOON!

100 + jap carrier AC destroyed!

now the only major carrier threats is ZUIKAKU

but with 6 battle hardened carriers under my command and more on the way, they wont have a chance

the Kido Butais days of glory are OVER

UPDATE =

COMBAT DATE = 10/15/42

as part of my plans and operations to isolate, cut off, weaken and take rabaul, i decided to build a fighter and patrol plane base at buka, to assist in air operations against rabaul, and kavieng

so the engineers were all ready to go

then i said to myself, hmm, i better send sum troops along with them in case there are any jap troops or engineers there

i was right

there were 2000+ jap engineers on buka

thankfully tho, i sent 6000 infantry, all of which to part in the invasion of shortland

within a day, buka was secured

and now i have engineers there, including the noble SEABEES

theyre building up the AF and its port

aerial recon has spotted ALOT of enemy naval activity around rabaul

i think that the japs r going to try to RETAKE buka, or even shortland

so im sending aerial reinforcements to both buka and shortland

the carriers will also be heading there asap, in case theyre having wats left of their carriers covering the troop and supply ships

i will also be sendingground reinforcements to buka and shortland

because of its size, shortland is of course the priority

but still, i wont let the japs retake either

at least, not without 1 HELL OF A FIGHT

LOSSES =

ALLIED A/C = 628
JAP A/C = 1320! INCLUDING 500+ ZEROS!

ALLIED SHIPS = 62 = 650 POINTS
JAP SHIPS = 164 = 2850 POINTS

4 JAP CVs
2 JAP CVLs

1 USN CVE

CURRENT SCORE =

8664 = ALLIED
6971 = JAPS

me and the good guys are winning again [:D]

FYI

the fighters and fighter bombers that took part in this raid on rabaul, took off from my new fighter base at buka, NW of shortland

they were instrumental in protecting the bombers as they made their runs

and now, with the airstrip there severely damaged, the odds are that there will be less resistance this time, so i will be catching ac on the ground [:D]

im prepping a small invasion of munda, to take it away from the japs as they have landed sum engineers there

and i will land either at kavieng or lae within 2 months

after i secure lae or kavieng or both...

i will take my carrriers...

and strike TRUK!

readjusting troop positions throughout the theater

preparing for invasion of Lae

preparing for possible invasions of munda and bouganvile, as it seems the japs are building bases there

since the AI will most likely not even think about an invasion of australia, im pulling ALL the troops there out, with the exception of the 100K troops at brisbane
