Ow, My Fleet! - Allied 2-Day PBEM

Post by Alikchi2 »

I'm not what you would call a hardcore wargamer. I played Korsun Pocket, and Combat Mission, and a succession of RTS games.

So, naturally, I begin a full scenario game versus a seasoned veteran. Welcome to the showcase of horrible mistakes and plans miscarried. [:D]

This is a two-day AAR and I am also lazy. It will therefore be written in a very "free-form" format - I won't cover every day, I'll be vague in general, and I'll probably just sporadically paste in everything interesting or meaningful to the game as a whole and fill you in on the rest. But ask a question and I will fill you in. [:)] So prepare to watch me get beaned! [:D] We begin.

----

I do not have the December 7th - 8th combat reports, sadly. But I will fill you in.
The sneaky Japs hit me hard all across the Pacific - they took Wake, landed in force in Khota Bharu and the usual places in the PI (Aparri and Vigan), bombed and bombarded the bejeezus out of Malaya and landing zones in the PI, and of course there was Pearl. Pearl didn't go to bad - Although most of my ships were damaged in varying amounts, only one BB was sunk. What REALLY hurt was the complete demolition of my PBYs. He got nearly all of them on day 1.
The 8th was more of the same - Makin and Tarawa were landed on, in Malaya and the PI, bombings and combat ensued. His carriers moved away from Pearl towards the northwest, and I assumed he was leaving for good. Big mistake! In the meantime, I evacuated one BB towards Johnston Island and released several ASW groups. I also left Force Z in Singapore harbor - another large mistake.

Where this AAR gets its name: Me mumbling glumly, "Ow, my fleet!". The only reason the aircraft numbers are so low is that they were mostly destroyed on the seventh. The only BBs to escape were Oklahoma (90 SYS/75 FLT) - which needs about a year to clean the gibs off the bulkheads - and Pennsylvania, which had escaped south on the 8th. Pearl is in a shambled now, and will probably remain so for some time.

I twitch spasmodically reading the report, but PoW isn't too badly damaged. Force Z is now retiring to Colombo.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As merchants flee the SRA in a torrent, ground forces in Malaya struggle to align themselves in a cohesive defensive line. In the Phillipines, our troops flee before the advancing Japanese hordes. In Singapore and Pearl Harbor, navy personell are stunned by the quick and merciless dispatching of the battlewagons. Allied leaders struggle to form a strategy in the face of the devastation.

My next turn is here - we'll see how December 11th and 12th go. :)

A question for you all - what do you do with the large amount of British shipping anchored off India and that area? I've already got a convoy running supplies to Rangoon, but I still have many, many free ships. I'm tempted to use them to help evacuate Oil/Resources from the DEI. Also, where and how do you use your PT boats? Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks for reading.

12/11/41 - 12/12/41

More carnage! An ASW TF outside Pearl bags I-168. I like it, but isn't it a bit unbalanced? I'd like to see statistics on the number of I-boats lost at which stage of the war. Maybe a progressive modifier on I-boat maneuverability/stealth/another attribute could be added, like with the Zero.

Hong Kong continues to hold on, while the Japanese consolidate at Khota Bharu, Vigan, and other landing spots. I've lost sight of his CVL taskforce somewhere south of the Phillipines - search aircraft are not in high numbers there, other than a few Dorniers flying out of Balikpapan (I believe).

I am somewhat scared by the number of TFs currently moving in the direction the SRA. They are heavily escorted and the combined ABDA navy currently being pieced together in Soerbaja probably can't stand up to them.

The 3 destroyers from Hong Kong are running very low on fuel but will barely make it to ABDA. I'm also doing something drastic and moving the CVL Hermes and a support group to Batavia.

In the PI the USAAF continues to get smooshed, over Manila and elsewhere. Bombers get through to Manila harbor, damaging a sub and a transport (the sub was already damaged, or else it would be on patrol.) PT boats make a fruitless attack on a Japanese TF outside Naga and lose half their numbers while making no hits. Where are these super PTs I've heard so much about? :P

Dutch subs torpedo two transports, and in Malaya things go well. The Japanese heavily bombard Alor Star and move in troops, only to find that I've already evacuated the place. British bombers in Singapore contionue fruitless attacks against enemy capital ships - although they are gaining experience. Still no sign of enemy movement in Burma or China - although that will probably change very quickly. Reinforcements are moving in quickly from India - but I have left enough there to cover it should Imperial General Headquarters attempt a landing.

The Japs land a final crushing blow against the ships anchored at Pearl on the 11th and have left the vicinity by the 12th. Nearly every ship anchored there is in tatters. Oklahoma, astonishingly, managed to hold on. Somehow. Hopefully these constant attacks into my unimpaired flak have battered the KB somewhat - although I'm not so optimistic as to think I'm free of them for any real length of time.

Lessons (re)learned so far:
- Get Force Z OUT. ASAP.
- Even if a BB in Pearl is badly damaged, if it's seaworth enough to get to a safe port, get it out of Pearl before a second strike! Or a third. Or a fourth. [X(]
- Replenishment TFs should be set up a few days before the TF it is intended to follow move out. That way you will be loaded and ready - don't try and "catch up later". That's dumb.
- I thought I had gotten all my Malaya aircraft into safe airfields, but I lost a group AC at Alor Star. Grr. Don't leave aircraft at airfields where they will be overrun!

Nice DAR, good to see someone not afraid of admitting mistakes ...

I would not send the Hermes anywhere near any Japanese airplanes whatsoever. At least not until you can combine it with another CV or two and get those Gladiators upgraded ...

Excess transport in India: Yes I'm sure some tankers would be useful in the DEI evacuation. Also, you might like to start regularly sending Australia some supplies/fuel. Just in case your opponent tries to interrupt the US -> Australia route.

You may want to move your level bombers down to about 2,000 feet if they are doing naval attacks. I did that against the ai and more than tripled the number of hits on japanese TFs. You may lose more bombers but at least you will trade some hits on ships for those bombers. I actually was able to sink the Ryujo that way.

Thanks Captain Cruft. I agree with you on the tip about Hermes. I was hoping to use her to snipe at enemy invasion taskforces heading into the DEI area during the time when aircover was nonexistent, but it might be best not to risk her. Thanks for the tip on shipping as well.

Really? Wow! [X(] Sounds like a pretty good idea, heh. Ryujo is being a pain in the butt right now, Kates torpedoing fleeing merchantmen left and right. You'll see in the next report, I started dinging the hulls of Kongo and Haruna, too. But thanks for the help. [:)]

12/13/41 - 12/14/41

Interesting bit of action, these two days. For starters, the boys out of Singapore get lucky and score a bomb hit each on Kongo and Haruna! No real damage, of course, but a definite moral booster for yours truly. [:'(]

Submarine I-7 out of Pearl attempts to torpedo a destroyer and succeeds - only her torpedo does not detonate! Now her skipper knows how it feels to be an American submariner right now. Actually, no he doesn't - he's dead. I-7 subsequently ate three depth charges and is now enjoying a splendid view of the undersea wildlife native to Hawaii's coast. [:D]

CVL Ryujo's task force, now directly south of Davao, locates and torpedoes two fleeing AKs. One of them sinks immediately and the other has not long for this world.

The Japanese attack in Nanning, but are faced with superior numbers. One division and the 1st Parachute Brigade versus two Chinese Corps end up being roughly equal. Bombardment attacks rule here.

Hong Kong continues to hold out, despite the pressure.

Land-combat wise, Malaya was quiet this turn - except for a tank regiment and the Imperial Guards Division (!) taking Victoria Point without a shot fired. (The base force there is halfway to Tavoy.) I believe they will head north to Burma. Which is a scary thought - there isn't a ground unit in the Allied OOB that can stop the Imperial Guards Division alone. If I'm lucky, they will turn south. Malaya can hold off another division for some time.. until I get my forces from India in place, Burma cannot.

The three destroyers from Hong Kong were almost to Kuching for a very well needed refueling when by freak chance, they met the Kuching invasion force in the open sea. The three DDs crossed the Japanese T, but this was a night battle, and confusion reigned aboard the task force. Japanese forces drove off the British force and badly damaged two destroyers, while sustaining minimal losses of their own. By daylight, they had been located again, drifting listlessly north of Kuching, and 35 Sallies bombed them incessently for several hours. An embarrasing engagement for the Royal Navy. [:(]

The Japanese invasion force arrived at Kuching the next day and began landings. They are still in progress, but little hope is reserved for the defenders.

On a lighter note, the Japanese destroyer Yayoi sunk south of Wake today, the second DD believed to have succumbed to her wounds in the past week. And in an audacious move, the Dutch submarine KXII torpedoes the AP Izan Maru off Malaya, then surfaces and hoses it down with her 12.7 millimeter anti-aircraft machine gun. In broad daylight. 99 members of the 7th Aviation Regiment perish in this daring attack. [:D]

I ended on a good note! Hooray! Here's the CR:

The next turn has been sent. Reading the debate in the main forum - I've sacked Percival and replaced him with A.B. Haig. (I know it isn't "The Somme" Haig, but it still gives me the heebie-jeebies.) We'll see if we can detect any effect whatsoever.

On an amusing note:
SIG INT REPORT FOR 12/13/41
...
3rd AA Regiment is located at Tokyo.
...

Cut to Allied HQ
"General Doolittle, terrible news! The operation must be canceled!" (Aide; fearful.)
"My god man! Spit it out!" (speaking with a British accent for no apparent reason)
"The.. the 3rd AA Regiment is located in Tokyo!"
"No! Not the dreaded 3rd AA Regiment!" (aghast)

Howdy, I'm playing the IJN in this little romp. I am keeping my cards pretty close to my chest right now because I need all the secrecy I can get.

It is a target rich environment at this point, the biggest realization for me is how much you can run down your Bettys and Nells in the first couple of days. I stood them down for a few and let them get good and Sake drunk while their airplanes were repaired. The impressive scores with their port strikes (Repulse!) deserves a couple days off. When KB comes back to port I will hook them up with a Geisha Bn.

Alchiki was caught with his last BB in the theater steaming around the Gilberts. I wonder if he is planning an ambush?
There are only two types of vessels in the water, submarines and targets.

Why are there still subs skylarking in Manila Bay? These are valuable assets and should be out of the barrel by now. Ouch!

There are a couple that got tagged and have too much system damage to leave. The rest are out of the bay but have, so far, been completely ineffective. [:)]

I'm keeping mum about the Pennsylvania, thanks. [:-] [:D]

Another one of the Hong Kong DDs is destroyed by Runsilentrundeep's invasion TF. The last one is limping towards Singapore, completely out of fuel, and serving as target practice for the enemy's very inaccurate Sallys and Lilies.

Other than that, not too much to report. Hong Kong and Kuching still hold out - but not for long. Forces in Malaya, under the enlightened leadership of General Haig, are moving into defensible positions, and in the Phillipines troopers steel themselves for the coming Japanese assault. (Why haven't we had a major ground engagement there yet, I wonder? Hrmm..)

A few sub attacks are made by the enemy outside Pearl and by Asiatic Fleet subs off Formosa. None are successful, except for the torpedoing of a fleeing AS by an IJN submarine patrolling near Manila Bay.

I did set most of my Malaya bombers down to 2000 feet as per donkuchi's suggestion. Lost more aircraft, but scored several hits on a cruiser and transport. Was probably worth it, in the long run. [:)]

Over Manila, my P-40s repeatedly get pounded into the ground. I'm thinking of just evacuating them and surrendering air superiority to the Japanese. There's almost no hope whatsoever when every day they can come back with 20 Betties escorted by 30 Zeroes and all I have are 5 or 6 demoralized, fatigued aircraft.

The Kido Butai is probably halfway back to Tokyo by now. This makes me nervous. Once the KB is unleashed, any real hope of slowing the enemy down by commiting my forces is overridden and I have to go into flee mode. And I'm still not anywhere near as ready as I'd like to be.

Here's the report.

Actually this is an all Oklahoma AAR. I just act Japanese from time to time.

And as for pain he will soon tell you about Hong Kong and Rabaul.

Indeed we do. [:D]

School has started, so updates will be a bit spotty. No CR for the 17th and 18th to keep this post short, but I'll tell you.

On the 17th, I-18 was depth charged outside Pearl. Two minesweepers in an ASW TF were lost outside Singapore (bad move) and an AS was torpedoed fleeing from the Phillipines. Scarily, both Hong Kong and Kuching were shock attacked and taken today, as well. On the 18th, my Chinese faced roughly even numbers in Japs at Nanning and a deliberate attack by the IJA was inconclusive. Air forces out of Singapore also continued attacks, taking heavier-than-usual losses but also scoring some good hits (flying at 2000 feet now).

I'll explain the action of the 19th and 20th more indepth later, but I have the report with you. To summarize: Runsilentrundeep pushes into the Bismarck Sea, and grabs onto the southern Phillipines. Things are not looking good!

UPDATE: Here's something I DID forget - somehow - and it's big. A huge Japanese invasion force demolished my little flotilla on its way to Rabaul. Several cruisers and a destroyer were sunk with little impression made on the enemy and Rabaul will not hold out long.

The next turn HAS been sent.

I've had some computer trouble the last couple days, but we should be rolling again soon.

Here's a strategy question - what would you consider the best use of allied CVs in the beginning of the war? After smashing up the Wake invasion force a bit with Sara, I've been thinking. Attacking will just play into his hands, I know that. There's very little I can accomplish, and besides, my strength is way too dissipated at this point in the war. But if I can predict where he will move next, I might be able to maul an invasion task force - the best I can hope for is set him back a week or two without losing a carrier. So, should I hide or ambush? I have some things in mind...

It was the one you had sent earlier, it should be working now. I sent you the turn, though, and the internet seems to be working so we should be good.

12/23/41-12/24/41

Here's what happened on the 23rd and 24th -

RSRD bombards Kuantan, catching several RAF bomber groups on the ground. Ouch. Even more ouch is his bombardment of Lingayen with no less than 3 BBs and a large number of CAs and DDs. Double ouch.

Rabaul eats it from more than a hundred Kates and 70 Vals on the 23rd, causing me to scuttle Le Triomphant in harbor. The Kido Butai is in full force two hexes east of New Britain. He also lands troops in Talasea - is he going to march overland to Rabaul? If so, it might buy me some time.. we'll see. In the meantime I have nothing to stop him in the Bismarck Sea. He's practically ignored the DEI up to this point, which is good in the long term, but his blitz through the Solomons is looking scary. I fear for Noumea and at worst, the Australian coast. I have no assets in place to stop a serious push. Half the Australian navy was destroyed in the engagement north of Rabaul. The only thing I can do in this area for now is bite my lip and take it.

SS Pickerel torpedos a transport, but the torps fail to detonate and it earns two depth charges as payment. Balancing it out, S-41 torps an AK and gets away clean.

That's pretty much all that's notable. Malaya, Burma, the PI, and the DEI seem stagnant, with the enemy's eye fixed on Rabaul and the Shortlands. The long term implications of his strategy are not clear..

Merry Christmas, Nippon!

RSRD launches his attack on Kuantan with a division - 19,000 of his troops versus 17,000 of mine, roughly. There are four fort levels there, so I should hold for some time, but once it's breached, I withdraw to Johore Bahru and the province adjacent to it (the two north of Singapore). I'm not letting anyone get outflanked here. The pressure is surprisingly light in Malaya.

It's light almost everywhere, actually. In the Phillipines the Japanese have barely left their landing beaches. In Burma, the enemy is almost to Moulmein. In the DEI, outlying bases like Kuching have been taken, but Java is still safe. He is moving in China and the Solomons - way more than I would expect for early in the war, actually. Maybe he undercommited in the PI? I've been waiting weeks for the hammer to fall and it just hasn't. Hmm.

Anyways. Today we had some interesting action over Singapore as my Buffalo group badly mauls several strikes, shooting down several zeroes for almost no loss! His bombers must be heavily fatigued, or low on morale, or both. Many elements turned back..
