Why PBEM is fun

Post by Captain Cruft »

One word - SURPRISES

I nearly fell off my chair when this happened.

It's Dec 24, 1941, I am Japan. Totally unexpectedly the US battle fleet appears only 2 hexes from Kwajalein! It seems they were on their way to deliver an unwanted Christmas present to my most important forward base. Luckily the local Nells were up to the job as you can see from the pic.

The thing is, as the Allies I wouldn't have dreamt of doing such a thing. Worryingly enough, if the target had been Maloelap or Wotje the gambit might have worked too. That is the joy of playing another person, they are not you ...

P.S. There are planes on Naval Search at all the islands shown. Which proves that the UV "AWACS feature" is no more, hoorah!

Ever notice that everyone does this stuff? Yeehaw!! [8|]Assign more VPs to ships, and add PP penalties for losing capital ships or something. Ships and sailors get no respect.

Because it is gross negligence. They ruined Kimmel's career for PH and really he was more of a scapegoat. If this example occured for real (can't see it happening as it is really suicidal and historically the BBs were sent ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE WEST COAST) CINCPAC would have been shot. Unless somehow MacArthur was involved...then the would have called it a bold stroke, tying up vital torpedoes which could have been used against American boys elsewhere.[:'(]

Ron, I agree in principle. You have to play the game as it is though ... Very difficult to come up with a house rule to prevent this sort of thing.

Besides which, if the 4 BBs in this attack sink as I expect them to then that is quite a lot of points to me.

That's why no house rule is needed. If the BBs sink, the VPs reward the conservative player. Even if they do not, the damage taken will put them out of action, and this should dissuade overtly aggressive play.[8|]

That is just too true to be funny Ron. What fails for one guy is career suicide while for someone else it is a "character building" exercise.

Glad ya liked that little quip. Seems like all his biographers are huge Mac fans as well. Anyone know of a Mac biography which is more "objective"?

Gotta keep current. A little shot at myself in light of recent events. "Silent Service" hint, hint.[;)]

Yes - "The Eagle and the Rising Sun", By Alan Schom (I think). Trashes MacArthur appropriately and points out a few subordinates who were the real brains.
NOTE: Mac's WW1 record is incredible. Dude was a first-class stud in France. But I honestly suspect that - by WW2 - he was developing some minor mental problems. No kidding.
