Ordering attack & capture before unloading complete?

Post by Wildhack »

My situation is I'm attacking an undefended enemy port hex, but unloading my AP looks like it's going to take around a month to complete. And though a friendly ground unit icon has appeared in the hex being attacked, there are no ground units listed in the information box yet with which I can order an attack (to capture the port).

So as an experiment I let the AI run my next turn, and it walks right in. But how do I manually order my troops to do the same thing?

Depends on the situation but I usually wait at least a turn to make sure some supplies are present for my half-offloaded unit as well. Order an delibrate attack or under the AI they will just defend.

If you click your ground unit's icon on the main map (yes, it is very small), this will bring up the unit information screen. Now you will be able to select "deliberate attack" on the righthand side of the screen. The unit will assault the base during ground combat resolution.

Hmm...it's been 4 turns already (troops are unloading and caualties message being given each turn), and still no ground units are being listed in the information window. But as I said, the AI seems to be able to capture the port ok. In fact, the AI routinely seems to capture undefended port hexes the turn directly following a landing. So there's got to be a way to do this that I'm missing.

Edit: Irrelevant, I hold the cursor over the ground unit icon and it lists the name of unit being unloaded. I left click on the icon to open the information window and there are no troops listed within it (to give an attack order to).

They don't abbear on the list units screen but the unit icons are at the bottom of the main screen...click on them there and give them orders. It's a known bug that when your units are in and 'enemy' hex, they don't appear on the list screen.

This may seem obvious, but do make sure your TF is not set to "Do not unload". This would make your unloading take a very long time indeed. Even if you toggle to "Unload Cargo/Troops" nothing will happen unless this is set to "Unload Cargo"

Yeah, another good tip Irrelevant. Though I've now started another scenario (this one was all fouled up, I'm just learning the game), my Transport task force was indeed still set to "Do Not Unload".

Kid, it sounds like units not showing up on the information window in an enemy hex is a known bug (or was perhaps caused by my having an incorrect setting as mentioned above), but if you'd still like a copy of my save, just ask again. I'd have to check out the PBEM section of the manual to figure out exactly what file(s) you'd want.

I learned the same thing the hard way with a couple of 40,000 capacity invasion TFs. You set them on "Do not unload" while you are forming them up, then forget to change them back.....never again! At least it wasn't PBEM.
