Head to Head. High Detail AAR BY WA

Post by Williamb »

Wanted to try and post my own AAR. Trying the idea of hotseating and switching from side to side. I believe if I focus on objectives and ONLY react when I spot ships I can do this without cheating. Should be interesting.

My game has following rules. Historical Surprize is on. Sub ops are on auto (though havent seen any sub do anything on day one. Unsure of this one) US Damage control is on and Japanese sub opps is free style.

Japan can only attack port at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th. They can bomb or land troops anywhere that focuses on their stragety.

Japan's overall stragety is simple. Hold in China. Drive the allies from Malaya and Phillipines. Capture the DEI. Establish blocking forces in the Central Pacific and New Geanua and Solomons. Put Pressure on India and Australia. Sneak attacks in the alaska region.

The Allies stragety is also simple early on. Stand and fight with troops and fighters in Malaya and Phillipines. Retreat Naval and Bombers from there. Hold on as long as I can there.

Then build up to take on Japan to protect Australia. Defend India and keep china in the war. Strange Japan by hitting its Merchant fleet. Find a base to launch B 29 bomber attacks.

First turn is detailed below. The Japanese have surged forward and I managed start retreating US ships out of Phillipines and British ships out of Singapore. they will meet in DEI and try and ambush Japanese ships attacking there.

So here is the Detail Hope to follow all the ships and leaders that I can.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/07/41

CENTRAL PACIFIC THEATER

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

My Emperor. I must inform you that we have successful
started the war to establish our great empire. In
your glorious name we have attacked the Americans at
their base in the Hawaiian Islands.

Adm Yamamoto's Plan was executed to perfection. VAdm
Nagumo's Carrier fleet has launched the most
successful air attack in history. Many of the enemies
planes and ships were caught unaware.

I must recommend both Adm Yamamoto and VAdm Nagumo
for the highest award possible the Rising Sun Medal.
Due to their leadership it is estimate that many enemy
BBS and smaller craft were heavily damaged or sunk.
Also many of the enem planes were destroyed in the air
and on the ground. It is a great victory my emperor.

Sec of War H.Stimpson report to President
F.D.Rooseveldt

Mr President. I regret to inform you that in the
early morning the Japanese launched a massive air
attack on our base in the hawaiian Islands.

Losses are very heavy Mr President. Many of our ships
have been badly hit and many of our planes lost on the
gound. Adm Kimmel is currently assessing the losses
incured at Pearl harbor. The Japanese were so
successful in their attack that some of their bombers
gave up hitting out Battleships and dropped their
excess bombs on a couple of our PT boats. There was
little left of the PT boats after the hits.
We are at war Mr President.

I must further follow up my Emperor. VAdm Nagumo was
able later on Dec 7th to launch a 2nd air attack on
the enemy base in the hawaiian Islands. Reports from
the pilots during this mission state that they saw
many enemy ships burning and sinking in the harbor.
The were able to bomb and torpedo them some more
causeing even more damage.

Losses are still light and I must further commend
some of our excellent pilots.
I awarded Air Medals to all of Our Torpedo and DiveBomber Sqd

Commanders. Their Groups did and excellent Job.
Also I awarded the Air Medal to LtCmd S.Itaya of the Akagi. His Fighter Group downed 13 enemy fighters.
Finally I award CPO R.Nagaishi of the Akagi the Rising Sun Medal for
downing 5 enemy planes and becomming the First Ace of this war.

Sec of War H.Stimpson report to President
F.D.Rooseveldt

I have a follow up Mr President. Adm Kimmel at pearl
informed me that at 4 PM Hawaiian time the Japanese
launched a 2nd air attack. This one included many
torpedo bombers. Few of our planes were able to get
into the air to challenge the Japanese.

I must sadly report Mr President that 7 of our
Battleships, 1 of our Heavy Cruisers and 2 PT boats
were sunk during the two attacks. This has been a very
tragic day.

SOUTH PACIFIC THEATER

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

My Emperor. I must also report on our attack on the
American enemy base of Wake in the South Pacific.

Our bombers successfully attacked the enemy base
there and then we were able to land our troops there
with light casualties. In the first attack our troops
were able to drive off of the beach into the main
island. I expect Wake to fall very quickly.

Sec of War H.Stimpson report to President
F.D.Rooseveldt

There are also reports comming out of Wake of an
attack there. Japanese bombers hit Wake early in the
morning and Japanese troops began landing there. Our
Shore batteries did some damage but the Japanese
issolated a group of soldiers in a quick attack and
took them prisoner.
However I am awarding Maj Devereaux the Bronze star for hitting the

Japanese hard on the beaches with his shore guns.

Adm Kimmel informs me he is
rushing the USS Lexington to Wake to help the garrison
out there.

Reports are also comming in of othjer Japanese
landings in the South Pacific. The Isles of Guam and
Tarawa reported Japanese troops landing. Guam is still
on the air but we have lost all contact with Tarawa.

AUSTRALIA/NEW GUINEA THEATER

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

Excellency I will inform you of our plans to deal
with the English Australians. Adm Yamamoto confided in
me his plans to deal with the enemy on this front.
His plan detains a massive invasion of New Guinea and
the Solomon Islands. Adm Yamamoto wants a large force
here to either block any enemy aggression in this
region or to invade the enemy Australia if the option
presents itself.

To that end we have landed troops on Enemy Dutch base
of Holandia on New Guinea and the Australian enemy
base of Kavieng on the Isle of New Britian in the
Solomons. Both invasions went off with great success
and the only action by the enemy was an ineffective
air raid on our ships at Kaeving. We have been very
successful here.

Naval Attache' To Australian Prime Minister

Prime Minister I have reports of a Japanese invasion
of our territory in New Britian. Enemy troops have
begun landing at the colony of Kaeving on the Isle of
New Britian. Our Bombers attempted to interdict them
with undetermined results.

Also there is reports of Japanese Landings on New
Guinea at the Dutch base at Hollandia. This landing is
also a concern as it threatens our base at Port
Moresby. The General Staff is meeting to come up with
plans to deal with these threats.

PHLLIPINES THEATER

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

My Emperor I must also inform you of our successful
air attacks on the main American enemy airbase in the
Phillipines.

Our glorious pilots dealt a heavy blow to the enemy
air power in this area and our bombers were able
heavily damage the enemy base. Our Fighter pilots were
easily able to drive the American pilots from the
skies.
I award the AM to Capt Y.Ouchi and Capt Y.Kami for the fighter kills

they had. Also the Am to all the bomber leaders for the damage they

cause Clark and Manila Airbases.

Sec of War H.Stimpson report to President
F.D.Rooseveldt

Mr President there is also a report comming in from
Gen MacArthur from the Phillipines. It seems that the
Japanese launched major air raids on the air bases of
Clark and Manila. Gen MacArthur reports heavy losses
in planes and extensive damage to the airfeilds. Clark
airfeild is badly damaged and barely operational. Just
like at Pearl Harbor the enemy fighters proved to be
surprizingly good and effective weapons. We must come
up with some kind of counter to this aircraft.

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

I am also please to inform your Excellency of the
progress of our invasion of the enemy American
Phillipine Islands.
Our first blow fell on the enemy held island of
Batan. Our planes were able to carry out successful
attacks on the island. Then we bombarded the island
and was able to land our forces against the weakened
American positions. I am very please to inform you
that the enemy base at Batan has fallen with many
enemy prisoners taken. I award LtCmd R.Minobe the Setting Moon Medal

for his leadership in taking Batan Isle.

Also there were air raids and invasions all along
northern Luzon. Our progress in this invasion has been
very impressive.

Also there is word of our invasion of the Isle of
Mindano. Our troops have begun landing there and
succuring the beach head. We will soon be able to
expand out and threaten the city of Davao.

Sec of War H.Stimpson report to President
F.D.Rooseveldt

Mr President I also have some more info about the
Phillipines. Gen MacAthur informed me that the
Japanese have launched numberous air raids and naval
bombardments all along the northern coast of Luzon.

The Enemy has also landed troops at Appari, Vigan and
on the Isle of Batan. Gen MacAthur states that Batan
isle has gone off the air and he suspects the worst.
Gen MacAthur is consolidating his forces in central
Luzon but has made repeated requests for more troops
and air power. i informed MacAthur that attempts were
being made to speed up troops mobilization and we will
help him when we can.

MacArthur also informed me of a Japanese invasion
force landing on the Isle of Mindano. Gen MacArthur
has ordered them to hold on as long as possible but
has stated to me that the defense of Luzon is the
critical postion to the defense of the Phillipines.

DUTCH EAST INDIES THEATER

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

Most revered Emperor our plans for the invasion of
the Dutch holdings in the pacific has also begun. Our
carrier planes have hit the Dutch port of Menado and
we have bombarded Brunei successful and landed on the
west coast of Borneo. The Dutch launched several
inconsequentual air attacks on our ships.
The landings there have been highly succesful with
hardly any loss at all. We will proceed to drive
throughout the DEI and capture all of the resources we
need to complete our Empire.

Governor General cable to Dutch Government in Exile

Comrade in arms I must inform you of an attack on
the Dutch colonies in the Dutch East Indies. Japanese
airplanes hit the port of Menado and were successful
driven off. We launched several air raids on a
Japanese landing force at Jesselton on the west coast
of Borneo. The Japanese were still able to land there.
The Japanese also bombarded Brunei ccausing heavy
damage there. We will do whatever is necessary to
drive the invaders from our homes.

MALAYA THEATER

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

Emperor we have also launched attacks on the British
enemy in Malaya. The start was a major air attack on
the port of Singapore. Like all the other enemies the
British couldnt stop our excellent pilots. They report
extensive damage to the enemy planes and airfeilds.
This action has crippled the British air power in
Malaya.

Adm Louis Mountbatten letter to Prime Minister
W.Churchill

Esteemed Prime Minister. I am reporting to you about
the condition of the Commonweath troops in the Pacific
theater.
Today the Japanese Empire launched a heavy air attack
on our airbases at Singapore. The air Commander there
is reporting heavy casualties from enmey fighters and
bombers. The Japanese it appears intend on invading
Malaya. I have full confidence in Gen Percival in
Singapore and our brave men in Malaya to meet this new
threat.

Audience Prime Minister H.Tojo with Emperor Hirohito

Graious Emperor I bring news of our landings in
Malaya. Our troops successfully invaded the Twon of
Khota Bahru. After an air attack and Bombardment many
of our couragous soldiers landed and began organizing
a beach head.

The British launched many ineffective
air counter attacks and a small artillery bombarment.
This has done little to slow down our forces.
Also we bombed and hit the British all along the
Malaya front.

Adm Louis Mountbatten letter to Prime Minister
W.Churchill

Sir I have also gotten more reports from Gen
Percival in Singapore. he is reporting a Japanese
landing force at the town of Khota Bahru. Heavy enemy
bombing and naval bombardment preceeded the landing.
Khota Bahru seems to me a focus of a major enemy push.
Sir I am Awarding Col J.C.Lumsden the DSO for his vallant defense of
the Khota Bharu Beach.

Gen Percival is reporting that RAF planes have hit the
enemy beach head and that Indian troops stationed
there have begun to sheel the enemy. As of now they
have the Japanese trapped on the beach head. there
were also Japanese air raids on Alor Star and Kuantan
and RAF Pilots bombed an enemy TF at Songkhia.

Heh, I spent years of my life playing Avalon Hill games solitaire, so why not WITP? With the spotting and Fog of War rules, it's if anything more feasible than it was with board games. Good luck.

RE: Head to Head. High Detail AAR BY WA

Post by Williamb »

OK I redid this AAR after problems with the Sub Warfare. I scattered the subs better and its working well.

I wanted to add some color to highlight key damage and to add more detail like medals. (Admittedly some made up)

Have a few more turns done will add them when I get a chance.

And do have to state that it is possible to play solo as task forces are well hidden in the game.
